lymphedema/ cellulitis
Hi,my mum is in a bad way.
She has had Rheumatoid Arthritis for about 25 years for which she receives steroid injections 3 monthly to keep the flare ups at bay. She now has very limited mobility and potters around the house with the help of my dad.
Over the past year, lymphedema has become a huge problem, particularly in her legs, her skin is so fragile it breaks down frequently taking months to heal and lately she has had 2 hospital admissions with cellulitis in both legs.
|She is now permanently on antibiotics and can hardly walk because of the sheer size of her legs, so she syats in bed most of the time to relieve the effects of gravity.
I know there is a whole lot of chronic stuff there but is there anything to address the lymphedema. If this was controlled the cellulitis wouldn't happen and she has learnt to cope with the RA.

oh boy, here we go

72 years old
5 ft 2 inches
recently put on a lot of weight due to inactivity, fluid and diet so 16 stone.
Married
Residing in norhtern Ireland therefore, wet, windy climate, not cold all the time!
Complaints:
1 Rhematoid Arthritis approx 25yrs
2 Lymphedema approx 5 yrs
3 Cellulitis approx 1 yr
Not diabetic
Very sweet tooth
Doesn't drink much at all, never has
BP high, not controlled by medication for 25 yrs
Feeling angry and fed up, problems being caused by mistakes and experimentatuion of nurses and feeling very out of control. Things being done to her and life is invaded but has no choice.
Still mostly puts on a brave face but likes to have a good moan about everybody and everything, nobdy can do anything right!
Feels very wounded by misfortune of others, to the extreme,eg still cries about people killed in WWII!
Family business was blown up in the Troubles if 1970s in NI and still talks about it as though it was yesterday, caused her father to have a Stroke, she thinks,
Lives life inthe past, doesn't like change
holds grudges forever and can be very extreme in her opinions.
Oh dear, sounds bad!
Medication:
Kennalog injections 3monthly
Ibuprofen prn
Antibiotics qds
Only child
Father ran business and was relatively well off for that time
Mother stayed at home, but died young of brain tumour, very angry about that
Not highly educated though likes puzzles and numbers and logic
Worked as a secretary in the 50s before getting married then as a sewer of curtainsfor the family business
Very selfish and demanding person, eg my husband just loves to care for me and do everything for me.
Though also gives out much love.
Suspicious of people, doesn't keep friends easily, always a reason to fall out with someone.
In alot of pain which is exhausting and makes her irritable.
Condition doesn't appear to be related to season or weather change.
Have no pictures to attach at this time.

It sounds like your doctor isn't that up to date on some treatments for lymphedema. The lymph fluid hampers the joints and probably makes her pain level from the RA alot worse. Ibuprofen taken on a regular basis can cause swelling too. Has anyone talked to you or her at all about complete/complex decongestive therapy? It's similiar to a medical massage, a certified lymphedema therapist would work hands on to move the stagnant fluid out of her legs, she would be wrapped to keep swelling out, proper skin care, special exercises to promote lymph flow, then possibly skin brushing, how to do the bodywork at home, and when she was the smallest they can get her, she would graduate to compression stockings. With lymphedema, you need to keep your immune system strong, I myself take vitamins C, zinc, and B complex, along with enzymes. There isn't really any special diet for lymphedema other than to eat healthy. She also needs to drink alot of water as water helps push toxins out of the body. Lymphedema more under control will help cut down on cellulitis as well. she is or you are more than welcome to join my support group and check my site out to learn all you can about lymphedema.
