3 year old sucks thumb continuously
my three years old daughter most of the times sucks her thumb. this is causing damage to her teeth. they are coming outwards. we try our best to forbade her. but the moment we are away, she does it again. she loves going to school because there she can suck her thumb uninterrupted. we have tried many methods like tying thumb, applying bitter things on her thumb etc. all vain. please help.sepia on 2006-05-16

there are remedies like CALC CARB, IPEC etc. but practically i havent seen any child getting cured with this. you may try and see if it succeeds.

thumb sucking isnt the problem--has become deep habit due to underlying reason--treat chid as whole and will be of best for child--may stop need for such---yet if has only just occurred and not from years then explain so--so as causation can be addressed...if premature force this stop--desire for thumb WILL be rreplaced with other form of habit/secuirty/..or whatever this does for child...much can do with mother's state health during prgnancy/breast feed period...or prematurly removed from breast milk..if started after....also home envirement need be considered.whole picture so as not make thins worse.....need learn not focus on the outlet --but all characteristics envolved..

yeah, i agree with john.
the thumb sucking problem starts in the pregnancy stages if due to some reason the child feels psycologically insecure. this aggravates after birth if the breast milk is not available to the child right from the second or third day of the birth.
such children, generally are quiet type, introvert and are not naughty as others are.
they feel secure and fulfilled when they suck and thus dont need anybody else.
when they grow up, they will give up the habbit due to social pressures.

my daughter will be 3 years on 26th May 2006. she is very active. she was born in time. when the 9th month had just started i had labour pains which were stopped by medicines and i was to take medicine for almost 21 days. due date was 7th june but she came on 26th may with normal delivery. pains lasted only 3 hours or so. very smoothly she came.
she first sucked her thumb when she was 22 days old. after that it continued. though we have always tried to forbade her but in vain.
she took breast milk only upto 8 months. she herself stopped taking it. bottle feed had to be stopped after she was 18 months old, due to loose motions.
i make sure to myself feed her proper solid foods, milk, curd etc.

we have got her all the vaccinations in time. i dont have the date record right now. i was given Duvadilan (isoxsuprine hydrochloride) during my prgnancy and Duvadilan Retard in the 9th month for 21 days.
baby never had any problem. she was 2.70 kg at birth. and had jaundice in 3rd day which subsided on 7th day. otherwise normal.
at the age of 18 month we had gone out on vacation. may be her hands touched many things and by sucking dirty thumb she got loose motions which lasted for 3 months. this made her weak. she is now quite thin. upto 18 months she was chubby. gramoneg and gramogyl did not work. she was given stibs sachets and and fat free milk tin. which she did not like. but her motions became o.k. after that no problems with the grace of God.

what occur just prior 22 weeks ?anything at all...mother go through some trauma ;accident;injury;grief;extreme emotion;...etc...please think back....will very much help ...

it is 22 days. not weeks. on the 22nd day some ceremony is done. i was busy. and she also did not cry. so her feed was delayed by sometime. when i went to feed her, i saw she was sleeping and sucking her thumb. i took it out but she again put it in. then i fed her but after that she made it a habit. though i was particular with her feeds.

the moment she sees her father approaching her she will immediately take it out and say i have taken it out- irrespective of the fact whether her father asks her or not. the moment he leaves the room, she will again put it.

If sending the picture does not work or no body responded from this old thread, then you may try Nat. Mur 30c a couple doses for your child, if you are here to seek a solution for your child sucking his/her thumb. This as Rishimba said rarely responds to medicines. But Nat. Mur. constitution has this addiction/habit. So no harm in trying this medicine a few doses without unnecessary repetition and with suitable time gap between doses to see if it helps.
