Help with 15 year old spaniel

I’m looking for some advice regarding treatment for my dog. She is 15.5 year old cocker spaniel. I’ve been back and forth at the vet over the last week or so and things are still lingering. She’s had full blood works carried out, all vital organs considered healthy apart from a grade 2/3 heart murmur (last I was told) vet doesn’t see this as a part of the issue. She has had wax (initially) in her ears, she’s deaf. I’ve been told that her ear drum is fine. Last vet said it couldn’t be seen.

She has an ear infection, started on the right and now appears to be slightly less on the left. Although after she started oral antibiotics the left ear was said to be ok. Today a slight discharge from both on cleaning them. She also had a tumble off the bed but doesn’t appear to be affected by that.

So far, she’s had ear drops, she’s currently on oral antibiotics, she’s had steroid, anti inflammatory injections, anti nausea injections - she wasn’t being sick but was given as a precaution as her balance wasn’t great. She vomited after eating that night. Her urine is scanty, bowel movements aren’t as frequent, they are soft. She’s constantly walking around unless I have her up beside me. She’s still quite weak and constantly panting. She has improved somewhat since the start of her treatment. Her temperature initially was 104, after a few days of paracetamol it went down to 103. I don’t know what it is now. Although lupus has never been directly confirmed, she does and has since a pup displayed symptoms of it. She’s primarily treated with homeopathy but attends the vet initially when there’s an acute situation as there is at the moment. She wasn’t sleeping much, but again, now she’s able to be beside me (she only slept if I got up/was awake beside her) so her sleep has improved. Appetite is normal, not excessively drinking either.

Any further advice would be appreciated.

Thank you for your quick reply. I have all of those and will start tonight. I’ll give a bit more information I forgot to add while I remember. She has dry nose breathing, she’s had some snot coming out, I think it’s her left nostril but I’ll confirm that when it happens again. She has the classic dry crusty nose which has improved somewhat since the steroids. She was given steroids as a puppy/young dog but they weren’t continued. She does aggravate with the sun, previous ailments which have been initially treated by the vet and further with homeopathy are bronchitis, tracheitis, aural haematoma, she had kidney/urine issues 2 years ago and the hen her heart and joint stiffness developed last year. The heart as I’ve said isn’t causing the vet concern at the moment. Everything else she’s had so far has been cured/healed - no existing symptoms of her previous illnesses.

I’ll give what has been suggested and report back.

Sincere thanks

Hi Anuj,

This is an update on the dog. I have done a lot of observing so I’ve written what has been noted.

Her antibiotics have finished as well as the paracetamol. She’s still on steroids.

After Nux initially, she pee’d the best she had done so far. She was wandering and panting slightly less. I cleaned out her ears, initially it was the right ear and then went to the left. The discharge coming from both was a red/brown, the left had some clear watery fluid and I asked the vet if her ear was cleaned out with anything and I was told no. After 30 mins of Nux, she went to sleep but I had to sit beside her. Wanting to go outside for the fresh air, this has been constant, until this morning she wasn’t doing anything when she got outside, she would just fall/sit down, aside from this morning, this has been the same. Her want for fresh air is a dominant factor at the moment. She’s also worse in the kitchen if the tumble dryer is on and sensitive to the heating if I put that on. We’ve been sleeping in the living room with the window open and a fan on. This morning I think she was awake from about 4am, I woke up not long after. Periodically sleeping through the day.

She has and still is, slipping. Mainly on tiled/laminate flooring but also on the decking outside. I noticed late on, on Saturday night her right front leg was badly swollen. I did consult the vet and being a trauma injury, they weren’t too concerned as she had improved. I gave her pulsatilla (soft tissue) rhus tox and ruta graveolens. She has continued to improve in that respect.

Her bowels are moving quite regular now also. With Nux, her staggering to the left improved.

Noticeable symptoms at the moment are

She can be quite snotty from the right nostril
Balance wise, she’s better at drinking than eating. Tonight she was able to drink for quite a period of time without any problem. Eating is still a bit of a difficulty for her, she falls back, to sitting or staggers mainly to left and I noticed she has a noticeable weakness in her back right leg.

She’s not enjoying her food as much as she usually does, stopping for drinks in between. Happy enough when it comes to treats. She’s on a dry food diet.

She walks quite hunched, as if she’s still sore/tight.

I trimmed her hair yesterday and this didn’t go down too well with her. I do wonder if this has caused a slight set back with her. She was staggering again to the right after this, and had weakened somewhat.

She also has the unwashable dirty skin (she has had both sulphur and Psorinum in the past and did well with both)

She still seems to settle more easily if I’m awake or beside her.

She fights going to sleep also. She’s fidgety and changes her head position a lot. She seems to be walking on the outside of her back right foot also at the moment. When she’s lying down, it can vary slightly but she tends to want to lie with her legs stretched out in front of her and her head, either stretched out in front of her or more to the left.

Her back legs are still quite weak getting up from sitting or lying sleeping although she does manage. It’s more difficult for her if it’s a slippy surface.

Further advice would be appreciated

Hi Anuj,

Apologies for the early post. The dog last night was really suffering with her panting. I am waiting on sulphur 30c but as I only had 200c, I gave her a dose of that. It worked great for her. She fell asleep almost instantly. Slept peacefully, she does still have a slight discharge from her right nostril, today she isn’t licking it away herself, which she generally does. It looks like raw egg white. I’ve also noticed and spoke with the vet, again not concerned at this stage as she doesn’t appear to be in pain but there is an occasional click coming from, what I think is her jaw. I’ve got her eating soft food from a saucer today and she seems to be doing well with that.

Do you want me to continue with the 30c when it arrives or do you want me to continue with 200c sulphur? She’s still improving with Nux as well.

Thanks again

Hi Anuj,

This case will need to close for now, pending further investigation. The dog was back at the vet again yesterday. She has a further case of tracheitis. Temperature was 104. Further meds.

Kind regards
