Annoying throat drainage

My 11 yo son has frequent throat clearing problems due to drainage of mucus down his throat.

He has had this for most of his life. It occurs year-round, but often is worse during classic allergy seasons.

It sounds like the mucus is thick and hard to move through his throat.

Worse: Is it always worse when he sits to read a book; he will try to clear it every 30 seconds until his throat is raw. It is worse in the morning after he's been sleeping all night.

Color: I don't know the color of the drainage in his throat, but when he blows his nose, it is clear to yellow in color.

Room temperature and position don't really seem to make a difference to the need to clear his throat.

Temperament: He is an affectionate child with a good sense of humor, but he sometimes gets moody and out of sorts - kind of extremes in personality.

When he is sick with a cold, the increased nasal congestion is a major complaint; it is like he is just clogged up with mucus.

He tends to snore at night. He is almost always very COLD at night when sleeping, even with many blankets and layers of pajamas.

During the day, he is not cold, but his feet sweat easily, and he runs around barefoot because of it. If he is watching an exciting movie, he sweating increases.

Foods: He tends to crave sweets and salty things like chips. He dislikes vegetables in general but likes fruit. He is quite a picky eater, really. I wonder if homeopathy can help that problem???

He is sensitive to a lot of stimulation. For example, in a loud room with a lot going on, he says he feels a feeling of disconnection, like he is not there, sort of surreal.

Thank you for any advice someone can offer me :)

In answer to your questions:
1-2) The throat clearing is physically irritating to his throat and painful, he says. It is a bother and frustration to him. He sometimes feels embarrassed, especially when others bug him about it, and then he wants to cry.

3) At the end of my initial post, I mentioned that he sometimes feels a sense of disconnection when in a room with a lot of noise or activity. He does have nightmares occasionally but no 'unusual' sensations with them, he says. He sometimes says he is craving something, but can't figure it out, especially in the mornings.

4) Fears: He has fear of imaginary monsters from a board game he has seen. He is afraid of 'mysterious' things (brought on by reading detective stories).

5)The only incident he could think of was when a pet died a year ago. He cried a lot and thought about it often during the week. He actually gets very upset when a pet dies, even just a fish.

6) He likes mysteries that are exciting and a bit scary, even though that make him feel scared. He likes classic novels like those by Jules Verne. He can't think of anything else to answer this question.

7) He likes to pretend he is a Star Wars character, fighting a foe with his lightsaber (shadow fighting). He imagines himself saving people as a secret warrior.

8) He often dreams that he is chased or chasing someone else.

9) No particular nightmares - when he has them, he feels out of control.

10) He loves reading, drawing, singing, writing stories, and composing on the piano. He likes playing with neighbor friends.

11) He likes stuffed animals and pretends they are real pets. He likes to make up his own games on paper. We do not have video games or TV. He likes Disney and kid movies, Star Wars, and Narnia movies.

12) He is not in any organized sports, but is energetic and likes to run around outside. He likes basketball in the backyard. He gets frustrated when he can't find someone to play with him.

13) Drawing/singing makes him feel happy and creative.

14) Can't think of anything else...

15) I believe I answered this in my initial post. He also likes to create and build things and think of inventions. Physically he is thin, but normal height.

16) He wants to be a hardware engineer and have a family.

17) He really wants to be like his older brother who seems nearly perfect to him. He likes to wrestle with his brother for fun.

18) He gets along well with people. Teachers like the fact that he is well-behaved and intelligent. Reads well. Pays attention.

19) He is very religious and sometimes asks deep spiritual questions about God's plan for His children.

20) He views the world as a fun place but you need to be cautious because of the evil out there.

21) He is generally quick to laugh at many things... hard to be specific. He cries when he is sad or frustrated. He gets frustrated by siblings sometimes and the burdens of schoolwork.

22) He is irritable when hungry or tired.

23) When alone, he likes to read or play the piano or sing.

24) ?

25) He starts making jokes more when watching comedy skits. A couple years ago, he was watching a kids cartoon (Clone Wars) that was more violent than what he usually watching, and he became more combative, so we stopped the show.

Sleep Pattern
1) He likes to sleep on his sides, falling asleep mostly on his left side. His brother sometimes wakes him during the night when he's snoring. He sometimes mumbles in his sleep.

2) See initial post. Craves: candy and sweets (which we limit), chips and cheese, beef jerky. He hates pasta. He dislikes many vegetables.

Alright I will look over this today or tomorrow and let you know what I think would be appropriate for him.

Sorry this took so long. As I was repertorizing the case I noticed the remedy Vanila coming up a bit so I wanted to have a closer look at that proving (being a relatively new remedy).

I summarized the case with the following rubrics:

Constant disposition to hawk
Inclination to uncover the feet
Ailments from emotional excitement
Sensation as if detached
Fear of monsters
Fear of imaginary things
Mucous in the throat, tenacious
Desire sweets
Desire salty food
Aversion to vegetables

This points to the remedy Medorrhinum. Since his state does not seem too intense, I would obtain 30c, preferably in an Oral Dosing liquid.

Interesting. I haven't heard of that remedy and will look it up. Thank you! May I ask how often and for how many days I should give it? I will find the 30c potency.

For each dose I will get you to do the following.

Hit the bottle 5 times firmly against the palm of your hand.

Place 3 drops into 200mls of water and stir thoroughly.

Give him 2 teaspoons of this mixture.

Throw the rest of the water out.

Give him 3 doses in total in this way, one each day. Stop if any symptoms appears to worsen (which is usually a good sign) or if any old symptom suddenly returns (a particular good sign).

It has been almost 3 weeks. Can you please give me an update.

Hello! My family has been out of town on an extended vacation for the last couple weeks. We just returned yesterday. I was unable to obtain the remedy before we left but am excited to begin. I have ordered it and am waiting for it to arrive. I will most certainly give you an update after we have used it.

Thank you very much!

Alright that is good to hear. I hope your vacation was relaxing, and look forward to your first report.

Thanks, Evocationer.

I just received notice that my remedy has shipped. A question: he is very, very sick right now with a respiratory virus that has turned into possible pneumonia. Should I wait until he has recovered to start the Medorrhinum? Or might it help with the congestion as he is recovering?

Also, the only form I could find the remedy in was in pill form, not liquid. Is this ok?

I'm very grateful for you help, as I'm sure you are busy.

Give me the symptoms he currently is presenting with, just in case he needs an acute remedy in the meantime. Do you have access to remedies we can use for an acute?

Is this respiratory condition normal for him ie. has he had it before in the same way?

Evocationer 9 years ago
That was a fast reply :)

Yes, I have a number of acute remedies on hand, as well as a health food store in town.

This has been like a mild influenza. It started on Wednesday with a sore throat but progressed into heavy nasal congestion, which he still has. He finds it hard to 'blow it all out' when blowing his nose. It seems rather thick. He almost hyperventilates when blowing and still feels and sounds congested afterwards, which is frustrating.

The thing is, he was feeling a bit better yesterday and then started feeling worse today. This was strange, as I would have expected him to continue to recover, had this been a normal cold for him. He started coughing early this morning, sounding congested in his chest. He has been generally tired feeling very unwell, able to get up for short periods of time only before needing to lie down again. He has not needed to nap. His appetite is okay. His eyes look dull, like he just feels sick. He says his chest aches. His throat hurts again from coughing and trying to clear the phlegm. It seems to me that it is simply moving down into his chest, as respiratory viruses often do as they progress. His cough sounds wet, not dry and barky, but only occasionally is productive (bringing up mucus).

It is normal for him to have heavy congestion during a cold. You will recall that the main reason I posted initially was about his congestion during times of HEALTH. It only gets worse during a cold. However, this virus is markedly severe and heavy in the congestion. I haven't seen him with a virus like this in perhaps a couple of years.

I don't know if it's significant, but on the day he started showing symptoms (sore throat mostly), we attended an amusement park on our vacation, and I worried that the exertion would not help. However, I have 2 older children with this same illness, and they have also been very sick, more so than with a normal virus.

Thank you again!

Ok purely as an acute prescription, get hold of ANT-TART 30c. You need to get it as a liquid dose. If you have, or can only get pillules, it would be preferable if you could also get a clean bottle with a dropper and make a liquid dose.

In that case, dissolve 2 pillules into a mixture of alcohol and water, inside of the bottle with a dropper. The ratio should be roughly 1:5.

Once dissolved, hit the bottle 10 times, and place a single drop on his tongue. Do this once every 4 hours until one of four things happens. Only start from the hitting (firmly against palm of hand), not from dissolving of the pillules (done only once).

1. If the symptoms seem to worsen, stop straight away. An aggravation is usually a prelude to amelioration (right remedy, homoeopathic aggravation).

2. If the symptoms markedly improve, also stop. There should be aggravation first, but sometimes it can be slight enough that it is missed. You may have seemed to skip straight to amelioration(possible palliation instead of cure).

3. The symptoms change very noticeably - the whole character of them, or of his general state - this may require a change in prescription (close remedy but needs a second remedy to complete the cure).

4. You have given 3 doses and there has been no response. Again, this usually requires a change of prescription (wrong remedy)
