The ABC Homeopathy Forum

kidney disease, allergies, constitutional remedy

Hi all,

I have posted here before but my symptoms have changed and so I felt I should post again in hopes of finding some help.

kidney disease (fsgs)
-water retention in the legs, sometimes it gets bad and have retention in the upper body also (face)
-protein spill in the urine (currently 2 grams per 24hours)
-trace of blood in urine
-urine often dark
-low urine output per day (500ml in 24 without fourosimide, up to 1500m, with fourosimide)
-low potassium (at times I have very painful muscle cramps)
-low calcium
-high uric acid (painful joints)
-low blood albumin (blood protein)- have lost much muscle mass and strength and energy
-easily over exerted from short walks or walking up flight of stairs.
-currently taking fourosimide or water retention and avapro for hypertension.
-as mentioned I do not consume gluten products or dairy products.. only rice, corn, meat, vegetables and fruit.

other symptoms, that may or may not be related to the disease
-allergic to cold temperatures. I get a rash when exposed to cold (itchy bumpy rash on skin)
-also feel cold easily (always wearing socks, pants and sweater in house when the rest of the family is in shorts, t-shirt and bear foot).
-going from hot outdoor temp to cool indoor them (28'C to 24'C) shocks my body and I have to warm up quickly (put on socks and sweater and sometimes sit outside for a few minutes to warm up) otherwise I feel sick.
-check my temperature and while the rest of the family is 36.6'C I'm 35.6'C, all the time
-itchy ears, fluid filled (especially after eating ketchup chips, but not after other tomatoe products)
-my bladder feels inflamed and feel urge to urinate but unable to after drinking a pepsi
-severe stomach cramps and diarrhea from dairy products
-unable to lose weight.

-I'm a female, 33 years old. was diagnosed with fsgs 1 1/2 years ago but suffered with symptoms for 1 1/2 years prior to diagnoses without treatment. currently also taking amino acids, omega 3, vit d, zinc, and mult vit b.

Let me know if I have missed anything. I hope to find some help here.

Thanks.

Please answer the following questions in a descriptive manner after careful analysis and recollection of previous experiences and happenings.

1. Describe your main suffering?

kidney disease (fsgs)
-have high blood pressure due to the kidney disease. (never had it before)
-currently taking fourosimide or water retention and avapro for hypertension.

2. What other physical sufferings do you have in your body?

3. What mental sufferings / feelings do you have associated with your physical sufferings?
* Irritable, easily frustrated with my husband and children. No energy or desire to complete tasks in the house or around the yard.

4. What exactly do you feel when you are at your worst? Describe the sensation in your own words.
*Hopeless. I have mental vision of swimming deep in dark water with no surroundings and being completely alone with no way out.

5. When did it all start? Can you connect it to any past event or disease?
 I went on a cleansing fast in July 2007 and lost 24 lbs and felt really good and healthy. In Jan 2008 I went used a product called HCG and did the diet (no fat, only 1 chicken breast and vegetables per day) and lost some more weight, bring me down to 159 lbs (regular at that time was 198 lbs). In Feb 2008 everything changed. Started having a huge appetite and couldn’t stop myself from eating (this lasted about 2 months then went back to eating regularly). Gained 20 lbs back then in June I noticed I was very irritable and had breast milk so went to doctor. She did a pregnancy test, negative, pituitary test, normal, thyroid test, normal. I continued to gain weight and was losing my memory, my sex drive and didn’t feel myself. December 2008 I was up to 200 lbs. January 16, 2009 I gained 10 lbs in 1 day.. all in my right leg (while sitting at the computer and drinking a Coke I felt my leg swell up.. took a picture). In Feb 2008 1 day it happened to the other leg. And I was up now to 220 lbs but still doctor could not diagnose me and I kept gaining weight.
 By December 2009 I was up to my highest weight of 249 lbs. My legs were so full of fluid that it was painful.
 I finally forced my doctor to test my urine for protein and she found I was spilling 9g per 24 hours and sent me to a nephrologist in Feb 2010
 Nephrologist did a biopsy and prescribed steriods, ace inhibitors, and water pills. I only took water pills.
 Water pills help me to lose some water, down to 238 lbs.
 My creatinine kept increasing and finally in December 2010 I started a gluten free and dairy free diet (I had read many positive things) and lost some more water weight. Down to 220 lbs but have been unsuccessful losing any more.
 I have high blood pressure due to the kidney disease.
 Taking dairy out of my diet improved my quality of life, before I was always having stomach cramps and diarrhea and I didn’t not know from what.
 I’m not sure if taking gluten out of my diet made any difference but ** I got more energy, better sleep, and my tests improved. I went from spilling 3g protein to 1.6g, my creatinine went from 1.02, to .62. and I didn’t feel so hopeless.. my mental outlook improved.

6. Which time of the day you are worst?
When I am tired.. then I feel very irritable and emotional. In the evening the edema in my legs is worse.

7. What are the things which aggravate your suffering and which are those which ameliorate the same? Example- time, temperature, pressure, rubbing, washing, eating, tight clothing etc.
- when I eat soup (salty) then my edema gets worse.
- When I drink a pepsi or a couple of ice teas my urine is darker and less in quantity.
- Dairy gives me stomach cramps (debilitating pain to the point of vomiting and almost fainting)
- I am easily cold and prefer to be warm.
- Feel like I can’t breath in tight clothing.
- Feel tired in the morning… takes me up to 2 hours to feel ready for the day.
- Prefer to be in bed by 10, after 10pm I feel irritable because I am so tired.
-

8. Do your think your sufferings have relation to any external stimuli (like, change of place) or any internal biological changes in the body, like, menses (in females)?
- no

9. When do you feel better, during hot weather or cold weather, humid or dry weather?
-

10. Describe your general mental set up? Are you Moody, Arrogant, Mild, Agreeable Changeable, Nervous, Suspicious, Easily offended, Quiet, Arguing, Irritating, Lazy etc.
-*I’m moody, suspicious, easily offended, arguing, irritating, lazy

- How do you feel before or during a thunderstorm?
* nervous when my husband is not around but love them when my husband is around.

- Do you like being consoled during your tough times?
*by my husband or friend yes, by my mother no (she is over bearing and emotional, and I feel like I have to hide my pain from her to protect her)

- Are you sensitive to external stimuli like smell, noise, light etc?
*yes, I don’t like perfumes, cigarette smoke, music, or bright lights. I sleep in pitch-darkness.

- Do you have any typical habit or gesture like nail biting, causeless
Weeping, talking to one self etc?
*I occasionally talk to myself, my habit is to keep myself busy mentally.. I really a lot of blogs and spend lots of time looking at pictures online.

- How do you feel about your friends, family, your children and especially your husband / wife?
*I am a complainer and always find the negative in others.

11. What are your fears and do you dream of any situation repeatedly?
*My fear is of losing a child or my husband. I dream repeatedly of a tornado coming by our house and not being able to save one of our children. I also repeatedly dream of waiting on my husband to return home and he either doesn’t come or when he does he completely ignores me.

12. What do you crave for in food items and what are your aversions?
*I crave salty foods. Have not craved sweets since this disease started 3 years ago. Just a few weeks ago I started to crave sweets again, so I’m eating fruits and having smoothies (frozen fruit and rice milk).

13. How is your thirst: Less, Normal or Excessive?
*I find it to be normal, I don’t drink more water than before I had kidney disease. My neph wants me to drink only 4 cups of liquid daily but I am unable to stick to that, I end up with at least 8-10.

14. How is your hunger: Less, Normal or Excessive?
*normal. I eat a lot less than I used to and completely differently.

15. Is there any kind of food which your body can’t stand?
*dairy gives me cramps and diarrhea.
*beans and broccoli give me much gas.

16. Is your sweat normal or less or more? Where does it sweat more: Head, Trunk or Limbs?
*For a year I didn’t seem to sweat but now I do, more. Under the arms, back and head.

17. How is your bowel movement and stool type?
*I do have 1 to 2 a day but not much at a time. Sometimes hard, other times soft.

18. How well do you sleep? Do you have a particular posture of sleeping?
*I sleep on my side or stomach. After I stopped eating gluten/dairy my sleep improved (before I was always tired, as though I hadn’t slept at all).
*My neph had me start Avapro (for hypertension) in June 2011 and since then I don’t sleep much.. I have a hard time falling asleep in the evening and have lots of dreams. Wake up late (9am) and feel as though I have not slept. Thinking about quitting Avapro because I am wearing out from little sleep.

19. Do you think you are able to satisfy your sexual desires in general?
*I used to have a healthy sexual desire but 3 years ago it went away.. completely. Now I have no desire at all. I do enjoy it when we have it but just have no desire to start.

20. Do you have any strange, peculiar or unusual symptom or feelings? How are you different from others?

20. What medications have been taken earlier by you to treat the diseases and do you have any particular symptom surfacing after the medication?
*As mentioned above I have taken many homeopathics. I have also taken many herbs and vitamins earlier to try to lose weight and since this kidney disease to try and improve my health. Non have worked but improve my quality (ie. Vit B complex for energy).

21. What major diseases are running in your family?
*My mom has high blood pressure. My dad, myself and two of our children have lactose intolerance. My sister, mom, and brother have depression. Many of my mom’s siblings have high cholesterol.

I forgot to mention some of my fears: I have a fear of snakes (all snakes, and often dream of them). I also have a fear of hairy spiders. Tight places, open water (the ocean, not being able to see land), and high places. I also have a fear being out of control such as with this kidney disease, having no control over my health.

I am an organized person and like to have everything in order and done a certain way. I like to have our house clean and since this disease has taken away my energy I have our children help me keep it clean and organized.

I have a very low self esteem. I feel very insecure in front of people. I escape the world and the pressures of it (including my lack of self esteem) by spending hours online.. reading blogs.

Hi Friend,

Thanks for the sharing the nice information.

johnsabina last decade
That certainly is a lot of remedies - would be easy to lose the correct medicine amongst all that overprescribing.

I will post my intake form as well. See if there is more information you can add based on it.

GUIDELINES FOR GIVING HOMOEOPATHIC CASE INFORMATION

It is important to describe all your problems in as much detail as you are able. One word answers and short sentences are not particularly helpful. Discuss each problem one at a time, providing (as a minimum level of detail) the following information.

1. What exactly happens?
2. Describe all sensations and pains. Each pain or sensation should be described in such a way that allows us to imagine having the same pain.
3. What causes the problem to get worse after it has started occurring?
4. What creates some relief for the problem?
5. What triggers the problem into occuring?
6. What time of the day or night does the problem occur?
7. When did the problem start? What was happening in your life at that time? Did some specific event or treatment take place just before the problem started?

Move from one problem to the next, doing the same thing. IT IS VITAL THAT YOU GIVE A COMPLETE PICTURE OF YOUR HEALTH BY PROVIDING ALL PROBLEMS YOU HAVE, EVEN IF NOT CONNECTED TO THE MAIN ONE, AND EVEN IF YOU CONSIDER IT OF LESS IMPORTANCE.

You should address each problem separately using the above 7 questions as a guide. Do not put all your complaints into each of the 7 questions. Discuss one problem at a time.

As well as this, please describe any traumatic incidents that have taken place in your life. Discuss anything that has had a lasting impact on you mentally, emotionally or physically.

Discuss the way that you manage or deal with your problems, or any problems that occur in your life.

Discuss any patterns you have noticed in your behavior especially concerning your disease.

Discuss any part of your life where you feel stuck or unable to change and grow, especially where this occurred around the beginning of your disease, or as the disease evolved.

Describe your childhood and the kind of environment you grew up in, with reference to your relationships with your family, your school experiences, and any serious childhood diseases.

If your earlier discussions have not mentioned these already, please describe:

1. The specific foods that you crave (not just like) or hate
2. The specific drinks that you crave or hate
3. What your sleep is like
4. How the weather and the temperature affects you
5. What kinds of things in the environment you are particularly sensitive to
6. What your general level of energy is like
7. What your level of sexual energy or desire is like
8. Describe your menstrual cycle

9. Also give these details

a) Body type and build
b) Skin colour and texture
c) Areas of the body tends to perspire on
d) Odour of sweat, body, stool, flatus, urine
e) Colour of stool, urine, sweat

10. Give any reactions to vaccines or medical drugs.

Thank you for the reply.

My main concern is the kidney disease, fsgs. which causes me to spill protein in my urine, retain fluids in my legs and have high blood pressure. I gave lots of details concerning this and the rest of myself in the above post so answering these questions would be very redundant.

I do not know what caused me to start spilling protein, it got somewhat better when I stopped eating breads and dairy but has not stopped completely. I do not know if anything else makes it better or worse. My doctor checks my blood and urine each time I come to see him, at this time it is every 6 months. (details in the above post)

My urine and sweat smells very strong, often I can smell what I ate earlier in the day or the night before. Ie. onions, dill, etc.

My body type: I am very overweight, short, round, light skin, freckles. 5'4' and 220 lbs. I sun burn very easily, after only 15 minutes in the sun. I have brown hair but at 33 years old already have much gray (on top of head and around ears).

Reactions to medical drugs: I was prescribed hypertension medication but the first one I tried (Ramaphril) made me very sick (nausea and vomiting) and actually raised my blood pressure rather than lowering it. Recently I was put on Avapro and it has lowered my blood pressure some (at times too low, 95/65) and I have not able to have a good nights rest. It makes me feel restless, unable to fall asleep and many dreams. I wake up feeling like I have not slept.

I crave salty foods.. summer sausage potato soup. I crave Brisk Iced Tea.
I am affected by cold temperatures.. I get a rash when I am exposed to cold temps for more than 10 minutes. It is bumpy and itchy. Going from warm temp to cool temp causes me to feel ill (whole body aches and feel unable to warm up until I sit in hot bath then dress head to toe and wrap up in warm blankets).
I used to have a healthy sexual desire before I got kidney disease, now I have no desire at all.
My energy level is low. I get very tired from short walks.
My menstrual cycle comes monthly, at the same time each month. At times it lasts for 3 days and is moderately heavy, lately it lasts for 6 days but is very light. I am very emotional the day before my period starts.

This is a very complex case, and on top of that many of the common remedies have been tried. Where to even begin with this....

I think the important thing is to establish the general state of your disease, and work from there. There are alot of symptoms, many of them will be common for your pathology too, which makes them less useful from a homoeopathic perspective.

The general state is mostly reflected in the symptoms that affect the whole person so I am going to examine those more carefully.

What happens when you feel shock of a temperature drop? What is that like?

What causes you to feel most irritable or frustrated? What do you do out of feeling that way? What makes you feel better when you feel this way?

Do you get much thirst with your fluid retention? Do you sweat much or urinate much?

What is the experience of being completely alone and with no way out?

Describe more on being emotional in the evenings - what do you feel and what do you do?

Describe more about being suspicious (situations, triggers etc).

What is it that offends you?

Why do you need to protect your mother from your pain?

What do you complain about the most?

Where are you most insecure? What are you insecure about? Where do you feel no insecurity?

How do you see yourself, in terms of your confidence?

Going from hot to cool temperature I start to shiver and shake so I put extra layers on. Often that is not enough so and I start to shake and just feel so cold so I step back outside (where it is 28'C and humid, inside it is 24.5'C and I am wearing a sweater and socks over my cloths to try to warm myself).. I sit outside for 10 minutes shaking and shivering, rubbing my hands over my arms and bending double to try to warm up. After about 10 minutes the symptoms subside and I am able to go inside.

In the winter, going from cold outside (-30'c to +24.5'c inside). I get a rash on the parts of my body that got cold (usually my upper legs, it is itchy. Coming inside to the warmth I feel so cold that I put extra layers on and go lay down under my blankets but often that is not enough and I have to sit in a hot bath for 10+ minutes to bring my body temperature up. Those are my physical symptoms, I realize you want to know how I feel but I can't really remember. I feel like my body is in shock and I am working hard to try to warm up, I'm just so cold.

I feel most frustrated when I have to repeat myself over and over and to one of our children and it feels like I'm not being heard. I usually ask everyone to go play and have some alone time to feel better. I feel most emotional when I am overtired or when I feel like I have not had any quality time with my husband. Then I just desire to cry. I feel better by going to bed and getting some sleep.

I am thirsty often, yes... for cold drinks.. from the fridge. First thing in the morning I go the fridge and drink and glass of cold water.

I don't think I sweat a lot but I do sweat and it smells terrible. I don't urinate much. I only have the urge to urinate an hour or two after taking Lasix (my water pill). On average I urinate 1000ml per 24 hours. I drink at least 3000ml per day.

I don't know how to describe the feeling of being completely alone with no way out other than how I already described it. At times I have a vision of swimming in deep water, as though I am trying to get away from something yet moving toward something, but without panic. I only get that vision during the worse times of my disease. When I feel completely hopeless and nothing will help me get well.

My husband is a truck driver and is not usually home during the week, only on weekends. So I put the kids to bed at a good hour and have a couple of hours to myself, relaxing and I get to sleep at a reasonable hour (usually). But on the weekends when my husband is home he likes to socialize (and so do the kids) so we tend to be out until midnight. When we get home I feel so exhausted I almost run into the house and into my bed, I feel like I'm going to explode into crying if I don't lay down right away. Once the kids are in bed and I'm laying down I feel better and am able to conversation with my husband for another half hour or so. But I feel frustrated if he mentions intimate time because I feel he should have been willing to stay home or come home earlier if he wanted intimate time, because at that time of night I am completely drained and am unable to give anymore of myself.

I feel like I need to protect my mother from my pain because she is weak. She takes care of my adult brother (he is disabled) and does as much as she can for my adult sister (who suffers from depression and is not with her husband). She carries all their burdens and I feel like I should at least be strong enough to carry my own burdens and help ease hers. She is also a worrier so I am cautious as to what I tell her because she panics (when I told her about my kidney disease she discussed it with her friends and then called me in a panic asking me if I was dying). She also called me over and over about different 'cures's' she had heard of. My husband and my mother and complete opposites, I don't want the sympathy my mother offers because it is over bearing. But, I strongly desire sympathy from my husband because he does not offer it. I tell my husband everything and he listens but it feels like he doesn't hear me. There were times, during the worse part of this disease a year ago, that I cried and desired so much for him to just hold me and offer me encouragement but he walked away. He can't stand tears.

I complain the most about of second child (in private to my husband) because she is always testing me in every situation.

I am most insecure in from of our friends. I feel insecure about my weight, my size and I am always pulling at my shirt. I feel no insecurity at home, I feel like I hide out here.

I am not a confident person. I feel like people don't like me, or that they feel uncomfortable around me because of my size. I also don't feel confident having people over because I feel like the house won't be clean enough or the food I serve won't be good enough.

Were you taking all those remedies together or immediately after one another?

brisbanehomoeopath last decade
Also what was the effect of either Nat-mur and/or Sepia?

brisbanehomoeopath last decade
It has been years so I don't remember what the affect Nat-mur or Sepia had on me. The remedies were often prescribed to be taken, 3 in one day, several hours apart.

ontheprairie last decade
You could easily have been given the correct remedy and had it ruined by such irresponsible and careless prescribing.

This is a real mess. I get so annoyed by people like that - they just make it so much more difficult for anyone brought in to pick up the pieces.

I will keep looking, but those two remedies are quite well indicated at this point. Did I see you say that using Salt pills helps?

brisbanehomoeopath last decade
Oh you also said your perspiration smells terrible - what kind of smell?

So you want consolation but only from the right person - your husband, is that correct?

Tell me a bit more about your feelings for him, the relationship you have had with him over the years.

brisbanehomoeopath last decade
My sweat and urine often smells like what I've eaten.. onions, etc. My sweat just smells very strong even before I noticed any moisture.

I love my husband. We have been married for close to 14 years and dated for 3 years prior to that and were close friends for 2 years prior to that... and we are only 33 :-). He is my best friend (at times it feels like he is my only friend), my lover, my companion, my everything. I don't know what I would do without him. I work very hard to make him the center of our family's world when he is home.

Our relationship is pretty good, other than the fact that he gets frustrated with me sometimes for 'not listening' (I often ask him to repeat what he is saying because I didn't hear him the first time), and I sometimes get frustrated with him for not listening to me. Usually the day before my period (if he is home) I get emotional and lay out all our marital problems... asking him to spend more quality time with me, remember what I'm saying, help me with disciplining the kids, and using a kinder tone of voice when speaking to me at times.

It is only my mom that I don't want sympathy from because she is over bearing. Everyone else in my life I feel like doesn't care.. they never ask about my health and don't realize that I often struggle physically and emotionally. (husband, family members, friends)

What kind of dreams do you have?

brisbanehomoeopath last decade
Somehow I missed seeing that you had replied to me with a question.

At the time of the posting I was having a repeated dream that I was deep in water, swimming. I felt lost, not drowning, not afraid, just lost, as though no-one could find me, no-one was looking for me, no-one cared that I was lost. Deep despair.

I have come out of that despair and no longer have that dream.

I do remember that Sepia had some affect on me. I don't remember what the affect was but I do know that it was positive. I also know that Igmara had a great affect on me back in the day that I was given it frequently. I felt better when I was taking it. These remedies were given to me long before this kidney disease. I believe for weight loss, angry, and feelings of despair. I never lost weight but I did feel happier and better able to cope.

I will note that dairy products and possibly wheat products have a determental affect on my kidneys. I was gluten and dairy free for 1 year and saw my kidneys come back, went from spilling 3+ grams of protein to trace (it took a whole year to get those results), I also passed more urine, clear urine.

When I do eat them (and they are usually in combination) then I have decreased urine flow, the urine is dark yellow, it tests at 3+ grams protein, and I gain 5+ lbs of water weight.

Thanks.
