IBS. need advice from dr. kadwa

Doctor,
i have been suffering from IBS for 3 to 4 years. I always had sensitive digestion. Can you suggest how to treat it? And what should I avoid in my diet?

General symptoms and profile
Soft stools, twice or thrice mornings. Sometimes after lunch. Rarely any pain in the lower stomach unless stools become loose for several days. Some gas (taken care of by not eating for 5 hours after lunch). Some partial constipation: feeling to pass motion, but if delay, won’t come or very little. Then feel bloated for a while. Can’t eat too much in the morning. Have lost 5 kgs in the last 5 years. Current weight: 45 to 46 kg. age: 45 years. No menopause as yet. Thin, 5 feet four inches height.

What first started it off (ie walking in a cold wind)
Always had a sensitive digestive system. Used to take antibiotics once or twice a year. Don't do that any more. Few years back, became chronic. Did stools, blood tests several times, all normal. Had h. pylori (discovered in endoscopy), treated with antibiotics, no change. Used to have a stressful work life 5 years back, but quit work since. Very little stress now since ambitions have been fulfilled and no new ones around.

When it's worse (ie on seeing bright lights, on stepping, before period, etc)
Can’t figure out when worse. It is routinely chronic, seems mild but weight loss is worrying.

When it feels better (ie lying down in a dark room, when warm, when cold)
NA since energy levels are normal or almost normal. quite active. do yoga. pain is rare. so seems like a normal life except weight loss and soft stools continue.

Your sleep pattern and details of any recurring dreams.
Okay. Dreams inconsequential, not scary dreams. Just nonsensical.

What you are sensitive to (ie, heat, cold, touch, criticism, etc)
Slight sensitivity to criticism and people with superior attitudes, which is vastly improved in the last five years. Don’t mind the heat. Don’t like air conditioning.

Your state of mind (fears, anxieties, attitudes, moods, etc)
Not too many fears. Living rather well with financial security, deliberate decision to quit work, do social service, and do meditation twice a day. Spiritual bent of mind. take life as it comes. trying to live in the moment. Moods: usually cheerful, good endurance, optimistic, take life as it comes. But five years back : was stressed out, fed up and still was rather cheerful.

Any desires or aversions for particular foods, and wether certain foods make you feel better or worse.
Not certain but can endure yoghurt well. Not sure about milk since have no immediate reactions to anything. a slightly softer stool the next day, sometimes not. maybe softer with spinach/brinjal. can't be too sure. Diet is rather controlled: low on oil, salt, chillies. Have a bit of beet with lunch, some sprouts and tomatoes with dinner. Like veggies. Have eggs three times a week. Love cheese but don’t have too much of it. Have stopped eating packaged foods, including bread although I love bread and butter. Love lime on salad. I think lime helps me digest quicker. Eat bananas twice a day and half an apple for breakfast followed by not more than 5 nuts and some yoghurt. (if I have nuts in the evening, sure to feel bloated). yoghurt also at lunch. Evening is a banana and egg/cheese.

Lunch is jowari/corn roti with veggies. Dinner: rice. Stopped eating wheat some time back although it may not really affect me adversely. tend to be a light eater. cannot overeat anymore.
Details of any major diseases suffered in past.
Typhoid twenty years ago. Occasional stomach upsets, amoebiasis once when a kid. Pylonidal sinus twice. NOW: osteoporosis coincided with IBS! Also, recently had a alopecia areata (which has cleared with some allopathic application)

Detals of any reactions to other medicines taken.
Reaction to penicillin group of drugs.

History of homeopathic treatment if any.
Have been taking for the last one year. Stools went from loose to soft, and occasional normal. so definitely some improvement. But never sustained. Two good weeks followed by three not great weeks…. Doctor doesn’t tell me what he gives so I have no idea of what I am taking! but normal stools are not seen these days at all. in one year there should be significant improvement. weight is the same as when i started, not gained, may have lost in thelast year.

All other symptoms you have (ie watering eyes, cold feet, thirst).
Do have itchy eyes if I get a slight cold. But for the last year, the occasional cold is under control. Don’t drink much water at all. Don’t feel thirsty. Never have cold water or cold things. affects the throat. Force myself to have 4 to 5 glasses a day. Tend to be a bit cold to touch sometimes. With period, irritable mood and sometimes a headache comes one. Never stomach ache.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
As you have been taking Homeopathic treatment, let us consider about biochemics and food supplements.
i think that you should take 4 pellets of Natrum Sulph 6x thrice a day at a gap of 4 hours for 7 days. Natrum Sulph 6x is a bio-chemic medicine or tissue salt. It is available at homeo shops. Please observe homeo retrictions while taking nat sulph.
Similarly you should take 1-2 pieces of Bel Murabba after meals. It is available at Swami Ramdev's Divya Pharmacy.
Please stop taking your homeo medicine while you take nat sulph and murabba. Generally doctors give homeo medicine only on the day the patient visits them and then they ask the patient to take placebo daily. So you should implement my suggestions not on the same day you see your homeopath.

thank you. will do and revert. what are the restrictions apart from not eating anything half an hour before or after taking the medicine?

nothing last decade
Please follow homeo restrictions like no coffee, no raw onion/garlic, no strong perfumes, don't eat or drink anything within 30 minutes before or after taking medicine.

Took natrum sulph 6X for 7 days along with bel murrabba after meals. for the first two days, no change. 3rd day, 1 normal stool! then again soft stools for the next few days. then again 1 normal stool. on the whole, i think i feel better.

should I continue the same? what next?

thanks.

Please continue with the same for another 15 days and report back.

the bel murraba from divya pharmacy is frequently out of stock. there is another one from phondegat pharmacy which is available. will that do? if not any substitute for bael which serves the same purpose?

You may have Bel Murabba from other source.
The other ayurvedic meds that are effective in the problem of having formed stools are...
Kutajghan Vati 1-2 tabs after meals.
Kutajarishta 20 ml after meals with water.
You may also see whether these meds help.

okay, thanks.

here's what happened over the last 2 days.

immediately after lunch i began feeling excessively full, bloated with nausea. i had cabbage (after many years) cooked in unrefined til oil (first time i had this oil knowingly).

lasted throughout the day. Evening saw intermittent cramps. At night, excessive diarrhoea, 3 to 4 times, completely loose stools and fever of about 100 degrees.
the following day: fever with leg ache, headache, 1 stool (soft, but not completely loose), almost no cramps, no bloated sensation. ate light, only fruits, rice and curd.

Today: back to normal, no fever, feeling fine, 1 soft stool, no cramps.

Didn't take the natrum sulp at all yesterday.

Question:If such a thing happens again what should i do? take nothing? or continue with natrum sulph or take something else? any dietary recommendations for such a situation?

Can i continue with natrum sulph from today?

thanks.

The tissue salt mag phos 6x works better in such conditions. You should have also taken Natrum Sulph 6x.
Now you should take Natrum Sulph 6x with gap of few days and see how that works.
The best dietary restriction that one can observe is to avoid the things which one can't stand.

ok, thanks.
I have a question. If you can send me some links or an explanation would help.

What is the difference between the regular homeopathic prescriptions and tissue salts? why one and not the other? or are both required? have not understood their relative merits.

If i had come as a fresh case, never having been to a homeopath, would you still have recommended the same to me or something else? those lists of possible IBS medicines listed like lycopodium etc., how do those work vis-a-vis tissue salts and when are they prescribed?

The trouble is, not knowing what has been given me for a year (this rankles a bit), i am curious to know where you would slot me for classical homeopathy and am curious to learn in time how to help myself, hence this question. of course i need professional help from you but would like to learn about my condition as we go along.

thanks.

sorry to be sending out so many queries but developments...
My blood reports show malaria vivax! the reports say ring forms: few. negative for trophozoits and shizonts whatever they are. platelet count and haemoglobin are normal. so mild. what does one take?

also, after this thing is over, what does one continue to take for strengething the liver and for how long keeping in mind i travel to south India twice a year which is full of mosquitoes?

And, since yesterday, my stools are normal and am continuing the natrum sulph.

but would like possible explanations to those queries in my previous post.

thanks a lot.

What is the difference between the regular homeopathic prescriptions and tissue salts? why one and not the other? or are both required? have not understood their relative merits.
**A homeo remedy is a stimulation to the vital force. It cures the disease by stimulating the vital force and it acts at a dynamic plane.

A tissue salt remedy acts at the nutritional plane and it is based on only the salts that participate in cell metabolism.

Thatswhy tissue salts may be repeated often but a homeo remedy should not be repeated without it's indications.

If i had come as a fresh case, never having been to a homeopath, would you still have recommended the same to me or something else? those lists of possible IBS medicines listed like lycopodium etc., how do those work vis-a-vis tissue salts and when are they prescribed?
**A homeo remedy is prescribed on the basis of totality of symptoms and a tissue salt on the basis of local or limited symptoms.

The trouble is, not knowing what has been given me for a year (this rankles a bit), i am curious to know where you would slot me for classical homeopathy and am curious to learn in time how to help myself, hence this question. of course i need professional help from you but would like to learn about my condition as we go along.

hi,

About my second to last post - on malaria - have gone ahead and taken allopathic treatment for it. but would still like to know - is this due to a weak liver which needs to be strengthened? if so how? any way to prevent malaria?

nothing last decade
Malaria is a sign of weakness of the immune system and it is not a sign of a weak liver. Natrum Sulph 6x is a liver tonic and that you are already taking. Instead of taking homeo remedies for individual symptoms you should provide all your details (in symptom oriented manner) and take the indicated homeo remedy.
You should take Mahasudarshan Vati (which is available at Divya Pharmacy) if you think that you are suffering from malarial infection. You may take 2 tablets in the morning and evening with some 15-20 ml amritasishta with water. Amritarishta is not sold at Divya Pharmacy and may be bought from elsewhere. These medicines won't have any negative side effects even if there is no malarial infection.

Hello,
For the IBS, as you said, i have continued taking natrum sulph 6x for a continuous 15 days now. The stools are normal!

Do i continue, for how long?

nothing last decade
You may stop taking Nat Sulph 6x now. If the problem recurs please take Nat Sulph 6c thrice a day once in three days and see how that affects over a period of 15 days.

kadwa last decade
Thank you very much for your help. if it recurs, will do what you say - take natrum sulph 6C three times a day, once in three days, for 15 days and report back. thanks.

About 10 to 12 days ago, i had the same problem again. Might have been something i ate. one loose stool then settled down to soft stools, sometimes slightly loose.

This time i took nat sulph 6C 4 times a day, once in three days. i have taken it four times now, that is, it has been 10 days i think. but no improvement from the soft stools. not coming back to normal as yet.

What should i do?

nothing last decade
Please take 4 pellets of Natrum Sulph 6x thrice a day daily and see in how many days you could regularize your stools.

kadwa last decade
THe stools got regularized in about 4 to 5 days.

Should I continue taking 6x, when should I stop? As a rule when should i stop taking it once started, and in future if this happens, should i stick with 6x?

Also, a hypothetical question, just in case... if the stools become really loose (which was not the case in the last two weeks), with pain, but without fever, then what should i take. just want to be prepared.

thanks.

Please allow me to share some information with you as you have already told that you are a social worker. Swami Ramdev has done an excellent work of taking Ayurveda and Pranayam to masses. Specially taking pranayam to masses has done wonders as it is literally a free of cost medication.
An effort has been made to explore the possibility of taking homeopathy to masses free of cost. The experiments are being done at some slum areas.
It has been observed that tissue salts work best in 6x and similar potencies but don't work in higher potencies. The cost of 6x is much higher than 6c. The suggestion that you should take nat sulph 6c was part of the same research (ie research on reducing the cost of homeopathic treatment) and it could be concluded that 6c worked but not as efficiently as 6x.

You may take Natrum Sulph 6x thrice a day daily every alternate week and see how it goes.

Hi,

that is really interesting to know. To take homeopathy to the masses is a fantasic endeavour. Just to clarify that i got you right. Now, you suggest, i stop taking it for a week, then again take it for one week etc.. So i can report back to you in a month? Do i understand you correctly?

Also, my second question was, although a hypothetical one (need to be prepared just in case since the homeopathy store is quite far off), ... if the stools become really loose, with pain, but without fever, then what should i take?

Third question: How long can these pills be lying around in their bottle at home? Do they lose their efficacy if they are sitting around, unused for 7 to 8 months?

Can't thank you enough for your help.

mag phos 6x and kali sulph 6x in addition to Natrum Sulph 6x should help under such conditions.
Mag Phos is an excellent remedy for spasmodic pain.

All these remedies have unlimited shelf life.

Hi,

I have another problem. Had aches and pains in the back, fingers, legs last year, got the bone density test done, result was osteoporosis. began taking calcium twice a day, lots of yogurt, some til seeds everyday. This year, am a lot better, back ache random. But there has remained a leg ache, on the right side of the right leg only. not there all the time, only when i sit cross legged for more than 10 minutes. Sit cross legged i must, no escaping that.

In late august,I had a mild attack of malaria vivax. Since then, the calf muscles seem to ache (both legs) and while sleeping there is an ache in the legs, more so if one is on top of the other. the right leg ache remains. Not so while walking normally, but too much strain and the sleeping position and sitting crossed legged makes it worse. I don't know if this is to do with the osteoporosis or an after effect of malaria.

1. What do you think this is due to? can malaria leave such after effects for so long a time?
2. What should I take for this as a cure for this muscle problem?

thanks.
