pet rat: persistent respiratory problems

Respiratory problems are very common in pet rats.

My new rats had the beginning of a problem right when I got them...noisy breathing in one.

I took them to the vet who said one definitely had it and the other one was beginning, so all 3 were put on antibiotics.

One of them still showed some symptoms at the end of the antibiotics (constantly sneezing). I called the vet who prescribed a different antibiotic.

I had him in last week for something unrelated and the vet checked his chest which was good, but he said it must be more a sinus thing. The sneezing is alot better, but now I'm hearing noisy breathing again.

It's worse when he's excited (and usually sniffing heavily - normally in anticipation of food) and basically never when he's sleeping.

I turned on the humidifier a few days ago (that's often recommended for rats with resp. problems). It's actually gotten worse over that time (coincidence, or not) so I'm tempted to leave it off again.

I know there are probably sources of dust in that room, so I'm intending to totally gut it, so there's almost nothing in it to keep dust to a minimum/make it *easier* to maintain.

I also use a hepa filter air purifier in there.

Whew, I think that's everything! :)

Thanks in advance!

Thank you kadwa, I picked some up today and will give it to him after I send this off.

I really hope to avoid more antibiotics as he's been on two courses of them already. However, pet rats can be very susceptible to ongoing resp problems so I won't want to wait too long.

How soon might I expect to notice a change?

On the basis of the information provied by you i think that the following remedies in 30c potency may also help you. Please administer the remedies to different rats. Please don't adminster all the remedies to one rat. On the basis of your observation you may arrive at the right remedy.

The remedies are
arsenic alb
nux vomica
bryonia
antimonium tart
ipecac
grindelia

The method of administering the medicine.
Add 2 drops of remedy (homeopathic dilution) to one litre water. Shake well to ensure that the remedy is dissolved evenly. One dose is 1 tsf of such water. Give such three doses thrice a day at a gap of 4 hours. Before giving a dose always shake well.

The following remedies may also be tried. These remedies are available not in the form of dilutions but they are available as tablets. These remedies should be tried in 6x potency. One tablet thrice a day at a gap of 4 hours.
The remedies are
aspidosperma
strophanthus hispidus

If you hit the right remedy you will get the result within 2-3 days to 1 week. Good Luck.

Hi, it's about a week now. Things were gradually getting better...not perfect, but better. Sometimes he was noisy, other times no sound at all.

This morning he was VERY noisy, and I was very concerned to the point I'm taking him to the vet shortly. He sounds not so bad at the moment, but I was quite worried.

He hadn't been on the ant tart as long as the first two. I assume it was ok to mix them?

Thanks, and will update later.

Ok, had the ratboy to the vet who said he wasn't congested, but rather the left lung sounded constricted -- more of a bronchial or allergy related thing. No mucus or phlegm in the lungs.

Should I continue with the same homeos? I've been using ant tart, kali mur 6x, natrum sulph 6x.

Also, can it be taken while on prescription? He was given medication (a bronchodilator) to take for 2 weeks.

It seems that strophanthus will be more effective than ant tart in view of the information given by you. Bio-chemic medicines (cell salts) may continue.

Also, can it be taken while on prescription?
Yes.
