Negative solutions theory: A scientifically plausible explanation for homeopathy

I am an allopathic doctor (a surgeon), now researching on Homeopathy. Like many, I was also very much intrigued by the increasing popularity of homeopathy despite its absurd sounding principles. After brain storming for more than a year, I have come out with the ‘theory of negative solutions’ to explain Homeopathy and its principles. Until now science has maintained distance from spirituality but we will soon realize that they just represent two faces of the same thing.

The fundamental principles of Homeopathy in simplest terms:

1. Like cured by the like: A ‘disease’ produced in a person by giving a ‘drug’ is cured by giving the same drug in very small doses.
2. Dilution principle: The smaller the dose of a drug (or the more dilute the drug is), the more effective it becomes in curing the illness it produced.

Homeopathic principles are not against the Science: Analyze the following examples-

1. Let’s imagine ‘food’ as a drug. If we give excess food to a healthy person, he or she develops a disease called ‘obesity’. Now if we give the same food in very small doses, it will cure the obesity. So the same drug i.e. ‘food’ if given in larger doses (than required) causes disease but when given in smaller doses can cure the same.

2. Now let’s take the example of hypernatremia which is increased concentration of sodium in the blood. If we give excess salt to a healthy person, he will develop hypernatremia. How can we treat this condition? The answer is either by not giving the salt at all or giving it in very small amounts (i.e. more water and less salt) until the sodium concentration comes down to the normal level.
Again here, a drug (salt) in excess doses is causing a disease that is cured by giving the same in very small doses.

In summery, the 2 fundamental principles of Homeopathy are very much true.

1) Like cured by the like: Hypernatremia is cured by ‘giving’ low salt

2) Small doses are more effective or powerful than large doses of a drug: The lower the dose of salt we give, the more effective it becomes in curing the hypernatremia.

3. A different scenario: Now let’s take the case of arsenic poisoning. Can we treat this condition by giving small doses of arsenic? Probably not. Because the body’s requirement for arsenic is almost zero, any amount of arsenic could only add to the toxicity.

If we have to give something to treat this condition, the only logical option would then be (if we forget the various chelating agents of the ‘rival Medicine’) to give ‘plain water’ with zero arsenic. Do no harm policy! (In due course the body might get rid of the excess arsenic in its own way!)

Or else we have to imagine a hypothetical state of ‘negative arsenic solution’ in which the concentration of arsenic would be less than the zero!!!

This negative solution of arsenic will ‘adsorb’ the arsenic in the body and hence will be able to cure the condition. Also the more is its negativity (or dilution); the more will be its efficacy.

So if we can prove the existence of negative concentration state or negative solution, then homeopathic principles can be easily explained.

Negative concentration state – the only prerequisite for homeopathy to be true:

But how can the solute concentration fall below the zero into the negativity? How does the solute exist in this negative state?

A simple analogy: What happens when we go bankrupt? We can still live in this negative financial state if we can barrow.

So for the solute to exist in a negative state (bankruptcy or super dilution), it has to barrow from the solvent.

My theory starts with the following assumptions

1) All the matter in the Universe is formed from the same ultimate Energy and
2) Different substances simply represent different patterns of condensation of the same Energy.
3) All the substances in nature are in equilibrium with the ultimate Energy from which they are made of.
4) Atoms and molecules must be viewed as Energy systems and not as mere conglomeration of physical particles. The various ‘fundamental’ particles (those we know off and those yet to be discovered) may represent some of the intermediate energy states along the path of creation from the ultimate Energy to matter.
5) As both the solvent and the solute are made from the same ultimate Energy, they can have common energy substrates to share and reform each other. This is what exactly happens in a super dilute homeopathic solution where the solvent which in plenty can ‘lend’ its energy substrates to the solute which is on the verge of ‘extinction’.

Brain storming

1) What lies in the ‘empty space’ of the atom? Is it really empty?
2) Is there a definite border that sharply demarcates an atom or the solar system from their surroundings?
3) What happens to an atom if there is just one in the entire space? Does it remain the same or does it ‘disintegrate’ into the ultimate Energy?

Atom as energy system:

We thought electrons, protons and neutrons were the fundamental particles until recently but now there are quarks and mesons etc. Big bang experiment may discover more fundamental particles. The search for fundamental particles will be a never ending story if we continue to cling to the particle physics.

Many think that an Atom is nothing but a set of electrons revolving around the nucleus made up of protons and neutrons. It is like saying that the solar system is nothing but the Sun and the 8 planets revolving around it. Can we ignore the various satellites, asteroids and the dust and most importantly the Energy that fills the solar system?

Solar system, atoms or molecules must be viewed as Energy systems and not as mere conglomerations of physical matter. We can’t take it for granted that the interstices of the atom or the space between the atoms, is really empty. This should still contain some of the energy pattern that makes the substance.

It is difficult to imagine a definite border between the Atom and its surroundings. The energy system of an Atom probably merges with its surroundings imperceptibly. (As will also be the case with the Solar system)

Energy and Matter

As already mentioned above, the whole Universe is ultimately made from just one thing i.e. the ultimate Energy. Different substances merely represent different patterns of condensation of the same Energy.

Surely many will understand better if I draw an analogy with the digital world. The whole digital world is made from just One thing (1) and the only other thing is Nothing (0). Various permutations and combinations of the same have created various programmes and ultimately formed the virtual world we all share today.

Fig.1: At the ultimate level the whole Universe must be full of just pure Energy and from this Energy comes all the matter existent in the Universe. At the penultimate level, this Energy condenses into strings. The string will have a heavy but tiny matter pole and a large antimatter pole that has no weight. The strings elongate with further condensation into larger masses. As the Energy condenses to form stars and galaxies, the strings become the superstrings which can span the Universe!

Dynamic Equilibrium between Matter and Energy

Imagine that there is just one Atom in the entire space. What happens to it? The Atom will expand indefinitely and ‘fill’ the entire space. The energy system of the Atom ‘unwinds’ itself merging into the ultimate Energy from which it is made of.

Now if the Universe ‘shrinks’, the same Energy condenses or rewinds and recreates the original Atom.

So every substance in Nature will be in dynamic equilibrium with the ultimate Energy state.

Solute ↔ Energy

Solvent ↔ Energy

The conversion of Energy into matter will not occur in one single step but likely to go through infinite intermediate stages.

Energy ↔ Intermediate substrates ↔ Matter

Energy ↔ Early substrates ↔ Late substrates ↔ Matter

Interchange of matter and Negative solution state

As both the solvent and the solute are made from the same ultimate Energy, they can have common energy substrates to share and reform each other.

Solute ↔ Solvent

In the super dilute homeopathic solution, the solvent which in plenty can ‘lend’ its energy substrates to the solute which is on the verge of ‘extinction’. So the solute doesn’t ‘disintegrate’ into the ultimate Energy.

During this process, there will be accumulation of the ‘excess energy’ or the unshared substrates of the solvent. (See following illustrations)

Now if we add the solute to this negative solution, the reaction runs in the opposite direction with the solute converting into the water, thus repaying its ‘debt’. Hence the solute that is just added ‘disappears’ and its concentration remains more or less unchanged despite its addition. When the equation gets balanced, no further net interchange of matter occurs. From this point onwards, the solute starts appearing in the solution and its concentration starts rising.

Fig.1: The unshared substrates in super dilute solution and the memory of water: The solvent lends the common (shared) substrates to reform the solute, but in the process there will be accumulation of unshared substrates. Accumulation of these unshared substrates can have 2 effects. Firstly they limit (by negative feed back effect) the disintegration of the solvent and its conversion into the solute beyond certain ‘negativity’. Secondly they will have affinity for the ‘lost’ substrates and thus responsible for the negativity of the solution or the memory of water.

Fig.3: Simple depiction of the disintegration pathways and the presence of dynamic equilibrium between various components in a solution (A+B). Disintegration of element ‘A’ (solute) will not occur beyond the diversion point. Common substrates derived from element B (solvent) will reform the element A.

Scientific evidence/ RCTs

Homeopathy has survived more than 200 years and has stood the test of time which is better than any RCT.

Just because we don’t know how the homeopathic drugs work, it is unacceptable not to believe in homeopathy. For that matter, do we know completely how allopathic drugs work? Even for the most studied drug or event in the body, there is always a point after which we don’t know what happens next.

There are good reasons for why Homeopathy has ‘failed’ in RCTs:-

1) We have not completely understood the science of Homeopathy and hence not been applied correctly in practice. Meteorological predictions were worse than educated guess in the past but the scientists didn’t discard Meteorology as a false science.
2) Inadequate matching- Homeopathy works in only dedicated centres where the remedy is individually and ‘freshly’ prepared after correct matching. The homeopathic remedies can’t be simply ‘prescribed’.

In fact, Matching is the main drawback of Homeopathy and is responsible its frequent failures. Matching can never be perfect considering the number and variety of symptoms a drug can produce in individuals, and the infinite permutations and combinations of symptoms.

Rather than using matching, homeopaths must make use of the etiologic, pathologic and biochemical features of a disease in selecting and preparing the remedy.

Examples:

Highly diluted malarial antigens to treat malaria
Highly diluted HIV antigens to treat HIV infection
Highly diluted tumor antigens to treat cancers
Highly diluted cholera toxin to treat cholera
Highly diluted tetanus and polio toxins to treat tetanus and polio
Highly diluted potassium to treat hyperkalemia and so on.

These highly diluted homeopathic remedies behave like negative solutions and hence can neutralise the corresponding disease states. Their potency depends on their negativity.

For those obsessed with experimental evidence, a simple test should clarify: Prepare a super dilute solution of a substance (in the homeopathic way) and add a known amount of the same substance to that solution. The solution should be succused thoroughly to allow homogenisation or equilibration. The concentration of the substance in the final solution will be less than what one would expect.
