rhinitis medicamentosa

Hi
I have had sinus problems most of my life and about 10 years ago I was due to have nasal polyps removed. I didn't have the operation in the end as it coincided with my pregnancy and I eventually took myself off of the list.
I have since become addicted to decongestant sprays and my doctor has informed me that I have rhinitis medicamentosa.
He told me to stop taking the decongestant spray and gave me a course of Beconase. I have used Sudafed tablets to try and help the congestion but it has been absolutely horrendous since I have stopped taking the decongestant spray.
I can't taste anything and sleeping is impossible, I succumed to taking the nasal spray last night as it was so unbearable.
I have had Beconse before many years ago and it didn't help at all, I have been referred to an Ear Nose and Throat specialist but this will take months and I'm extremely concerned about how I'm going to cope without the spray.
Please could anyone advise whether there is any other medication I can take to alleviate this unbelievably uncomfortable condition?
I look forward to hearing from you soon
Kind Regards
Ali

I too have a similar problem in which I have been taking Afrin to soothe my nasal congestion/inflamation. My nasal passages get clogged to the point where I cannot breathe at all through my nose. To top it off, I have allergy related asthma and have a difficult time breathing only through my nose.

After seeing a doctor and finally being referred to an ENT at my request, the ENT spent about five minutes with me, used a scope to look up my nose. He then determined that I needed to have surgery for my deviated septum. However, after finding an article in the archives from a physician, I have since decided against the surgery. The Physician explains in the article that if the inflamation is intermittent, and you are able to breathe fine from your nose from time to time, chances are that the surgery is not needed. In the meantime, the ENT has recommended a combination saline flush, which I have yet too try because most stores don't carry the compounds needed for this particular type of flush.

My question is how do I wein myself off of the Afrin if I can't sleep with closed nostrils? I need something that will open my nasal passage the way that the Afrin does.

thanks in advance,

Hi - I just read your post and I too have an Afrin addiction. I just discovered a product called Rhinostat and from what I understand it offers real hope in getting off Afrin w/out the severe rebound congestion. It takes 17-25 days to completely get off the Afrin, but that's it. I am starting this system tomorrow. I found out about it from another message board about nose spray addiction. Check it out - you can just google the name Rhinostat. I'm hoping and praying it works as my symptoms from using the spray are now just as bad as when I try not using it. I am miserable.

as soon as you realize you're addicted, add a little saline to your bottle. Use for a few days, then add a bit more. Keep adding saline to the Afrin until you're using nothing but saline. It's not foolproof, but it's the best shot you have of returning your sinuses to normal.

I am also trying nasal cones that open the nasal passages. I'll let y'all know how that goes...
