23 yr old female with high testosterone

My 23 yr old daughter was on the birth control pill from age 16 to 23. During this time frame she tried many different strengths of the pill because she always had a problem of some sort like spotting, terrible terrible acne so she finally went off the pill. She has been off of it for 7 mths and has not had a monthly period yet. She is not pregnant (has done pregnancy tests regularly). She went to our family doctor who did blood work which confirmed high testosterone levels. Over the past 2 mths she has started to grow hair on her chin, under her chin and now has a noticeable mustache growing on her upper lip. She is terribly upset about all of this and just wants her period back and wants the hair growth to stop. She is now bleaching the growing hairs. Her sex drive is very high due to the testosterone. What remedy do you suggest?

Hello,
Maybe in the meantime she can get on a high soy milk diet and tofu which is high in estrogen. I seem to remember reading in earlier thread here where mothers are concerned about their very young daughters starting their period very early possibly due to too much estrogen in their diet like from soy milk.

Estrogen creams are also available at your local health food store, which work very fast.

Something to go on in the meantime.

Hi Pat,

We currently drink soy milk quite a bit here. Tofu she doesn't like but I didn't think of estrogen cream! Thanks!

Now that I think about it, I will ask her first if her estrogen blood results were normal. If they were then I don't think the cream would be of much help because then her levels would be too high right? All I know for sure is that her testosterone is high. She was told by our doc that high testosterone is normal for someone who was on the pill for so long and then goes off of it. You'd think after 7 mths of no birth control pills, she'd be 'back to normal'. I just hope we can get this fixed because she's beside herself over this 'whisker' thing she has going on.

I just thought that by using estrogen it would be a way to bring some sort of balance to her hormones until you find a permanent solution.

Do you understand what I am saying?

It's worth giving it a try. It just might do the trick to get her period to start and get things rolling again back to normal.

Check with your local health food store about the various hormones available in their store.

I have never used birthcontrol pills and have heard of too many women not being able to get pregnant after they stop using them.

Hi Pat :)

I will have her try it. I was just concerned that too much estrogen might be a bad thing. I asked her this morning what the doctor said and she said all he said was that her testosterone was high. I have some wild yam cream here that was given to me by my naturopath for menopausal symptoms. Would that do the trick?
Thanks!

:)

Hello ontario,

You could give it a try. It's better than sitting around doing nothing.

But keep posting here. There are always homeopathy answers for 99% of human suffering.

If you don't find answers here, look for a homeopath to help your daughter especially if she is wanting to have children in the future. She may need homeopathy to help her reverse the damage the birth control pills have created.

Ontario,

Doctors always play artificially with our hormones and so does the food industry so just follow their example and use the cream. I think that there is progesterone and estrogen available at the health food store.

Think about starting a new thread with the title to the affect of:

looking for remedies to help with side affects of birthcontrol pills.

Hi Pat,

Our naturopath is also a classical homeopath so he has had her on a few different homeopathic remedies that haven't helped yet. That's why I came here looking for answers. :)

He has her on a remedy now and she's getting lots of dreams which is good but to period yet. I will create a new topic with the title you suggested and will get her to start using the cream. Thanks again!

I was diagnosed with high testosterone levels last year (I was 21 at the time) and was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Cysts do not need to be present on the ovaries in order to have PCOS, but high testosterone and amennorhea (absence of menstrual period) are two of the major symptoms.

I would not encourage adding extra estrogen. It will not balance out testosterone levels - it doesn't work that way. The amount taken needs to be controlled and I would not recommend hormone therapy without the advice of a professional. I took a drug called Metformin to regulate my cycles as my husband and I were getting ready to TTC, but sometimes birth control pills are given in order to at least resume a monthly cycle. Metformin is an insulin inhibitor - normally high testosterone levels are associated with insulin resistance as well. They won't necessarily reduce her testosterone levels. (I personally hated being on BCP because the hormones make me feel 'not right.')

Getting a proper PCOS diagnosis will be important to your daughter when she decides to start a family. Women with PCOS are also at greater risk for obesity (though some are actually quite slim), heart disease and diabetes as they age. Women with PCOS are also more likely to experience recurrent miscarriage than other women - a woman with PCOS has about a 45% chance of miscarriage with each pregnancy. (I have had 4 myself, and am currently 15wk into my 5th pregnancy.) Knowing about PCOS beforehand can help in prevention and early treatment of these conditions.

I know this is a homeopathy board, so I won't talk too much about doctors, but there is a book that has some information on natural remedies for PCOS. It's called PCOS and Your Fertility, and has many dietary recommendations to regulate hormone levels and the endocrine system in general.

Seems like the problem is triggered by birth control medicines.

Try Nux Vomica 30 three doses 10 minutes apart. Repeat it weekly till medicine lasts.

Have you tried clathrating for heavy metals? We have had this problem with my daughter who is only 7 -- she has pubic hair, hair on her back and under her arms, etc. I would look at PCA-Rx and GRP to help with testosterone. STAY AWAY from soy and other products with hormones. Call 800 800 9119 -- I always talk to Julie or you can call me (Summer) at 888 77 BELLY.

This is nothing new to me here. I have had high testosterone ever since I was 17 and even went through 4 to 5 yrs worth of male puberty. That included the increase in the male hormone, the hair growth, a little bit of the voice change, and the higher sex drive. I had seen doctors about my not having a period for so long and they had prescribed me birth control to get me regulated. However.. even though it did get me to start it gave me a lot of mental and physical problems with it like my body was fighting with itself. I eventually quit taking the medication and began to regulate on my own time. But now that I am trying to concieve it is giving me a lot of problems. It's just not taking one drop of it so I've been unable to concieve no matter how many times I try. I'm just hoping I can find something to help my problem without feeling that my body is working against itself. If anyone has any advice or other information I could use that would be great. 25 and trying to concieve for the first time with no luck...

Did you check your prolactine level? Do you take neuroleptics?
Did they do an ovarian ultra sound to check for PCO syndrom?
Have you had your glycemia checked?

They did check me for PCOS but the findings weren't very conclusive and that was about 6 yrs ago that they ran the ultra sound on me along with the blood work. I don't know anything about prolactine levels nor do I take neuroleptics. And honestly I don't think they ever check my glycemia. At the end of this month I'm planning on going to the gyno, any advice or questions you think I should bring with me to the exam?

Hi,
My idea would be to see an endocrinologist instead of a gyneco. Maybe you have seen one before. They should check, if not done, for pituitary glands and endocrine hormonal level and have a RMI done for these 2 glands to see why you have such an elevated level of testosterone hormone. Do they know if you are ovulating ?
Good luck
