Please Help - My Poor Kitty is Going Crazy with Allergies.....

Please, tell me what to do for her - she has been licking herself like crazy for months now and everything I have tried does not work completely.

I took her to the vet and everyone agrees she has some sort of allergies. She has licked her "tummy" raw and all the hair off and, the pads on her little feet are raw from all the licking.

Please, give me a remedy for an innocent, sweet animal who is just so full of love and it breaks my heart to see her suffer. I do not want to give her drugs.

Thank you.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Poor little one. Maybe you want to start by tracing the cause of the allergy such as floor cleaner, detergent, food, yeast infection, tick or fleas, etc.

You may want to describe more about the skin condition and maybe a bit more about the mentals of the kitty. The more you can tell about the symptoms the better chances of deriving a remedy.

Any bleeding or fissures from all the licking? Hope Namaste, Astra can help as well.

it will help to know what happened a few months ago when this started.
did she start wearing a flea collar?
did she have any other flea treatment?
did she have untreated fleas?
did she have any other medication at this time?
did she have an operation or treatment?
did you change her food?
did she have some emotional trauma happen?
did she come into contact with any building or other materials?

Hello and thank you for caring enough to reply.

We moved to this state and apartment 10 months ago - it was only supposed to be temporary but I have been so sick since coming here and Artemis (my kitty) has been licking like crazy with some sort of allergies. Besides the large glass bowl which I put her water in, I also keep a rubber maid dishpan with about and inch of water in it. She is constantly putting her hands (front paws) into the water and swishing them around, and then she licks them. I think besides something she enjoys doing (because Dafni, my other cat likes to put her feet in too) Artemis probably gets some sort of relief.

She is a very "happy go lucky" little girl and a personality you would not believe. I have had cats my whole life since I was a little girl and this one is something else. They are indoor cats so fleas are not an issue - I am a very, very clean person - meaning I always make sure everything in the apartment, their blankets, their litter box, the towels they use, everything is washed and clean. I do have to bathe her "behind" every morning because she cannot reach to clean herself - but, the poor thing tries like crazy. She must lose a few more pounds.

She is not afraid of anyone - when we drove up from Florida she insisted on sitting next to me on the front seat (which I will not do again) - she is a kitty you can put on a leash and take for a walk.

I use hydrogen peroxide for disinfecting - she spends the evenings laying in my lap, with her head in my arm, going in and out of sleep and looking into my eyes like something you have not experienced. The only thing she cannot do is speak my language. Unbelievable.

She is jealous - and very possessive of me especially with Dimitra - In spite of all her misery with the allergies, she is full of energy (13 years old) and even though no one else wants to play with her she will just play by herself sometimes. She is just so special.

I feed them Wellness and a new food which Dr. Weil endorses, Pet Promise - I do not give her dry food anymore - her blood tests all came back normal - and I never, ever give them medication. We had a homeopathic veterinarian in Florida and even though we are not there now, we have telephone consultations.

The only other thing I might think of is that this apartment is furnished - all my belongings are in storage - we were only supposed to be here for a coouple of months but things did not work out that way. I did buy my own sheets, blankets, pots, towels, everything - it disgusts me to use other people's things, especially when you know others have used them - but, the carpeting I could not change - of course it is so cheap - I vacuum every other day - put down clean towels, etc.

I don't know what else to do.

Any suggestions?

By the way, someone suggested bee pollen and bee propolis so I ordered some yesterday.

My own cat licked her belly clean of fur starting from the time my parents' cat moved in. My cat felt very displaced and threatened by my parents' cat. The skin isn't raw, just bare. Although my parents' cat passed away a couple of years ago, my cat never got out of the habit of over-grooming herself in that area, even though I'm sure she feels much more settled now.

Flea allergies could be another possibility, although I suppose there would be telltale signs of them.

Probably none of this applies. I hope you find out soon what the problem is.

Sorry about your kitty - I will let you know how the bee pollen and propolis work out - there is no issue with fleas because there are none and my kitties do not go outside.

ALSO, THEY WERE ALWAYS SHAMPOOED IN FLORIDA AT MY VET'S WITH ORGANIC SHAMPOOS AND THEIR FUR WAS ALWAYS SO CLEAN AND SMELLED SO GREAT.

My other cat Dimitra, who is very sensitive has been horribly depressed since we came here. We have never lived in a place so small and just all around, not a place we will call home. However, it is amazing how severely depressed she has become since coming here and as for me, well, it's been one health issue after another.

I cannot wait to leave.

Please, ANYONE OUT THERE, CAN YOU PLEASE GIVE A REMEDY FOR MY KITTY WITH THE ALLERGIES??????!!!!!!!!!!

Does your kitty come into contact with the surfaces you bleach? this could cause a reaction.
is the washing powder you use unperfumed and non-biological?

Hi Erika:

My detergent has been the same for many years - Arm and Hammer "no perfume - no color --" powder.

Although I have on occasion tried a different detergent but that is not usual - so, I have to find a remedy.

Mousitsa last decade
Oh - also, I always put my wash through "2" rinse cycles.

Mousitsa last decade
what about the surfaces you use bleach on? do you rinse the bleach off them?

erika last decade
Well, I always put a few squirts of bleach in the laundry and some in the liquid when I wash the bathroom and kitchen floor and, no I do not rinse it afterwards. I will do that tonight.

Maybe for a start, you can give Walnut and Rescue Remedy. These are Bach Flower Remedies considering the relocation. It might be part of the stress that you kitties are facing due to the small space.

Can imagine myself moving from a bigger space to a smaller one. It's suffocating. The other thing might be pollution of some sort? If it is, better to move out of the place because it can really make one sick.

You have said the carpet has not been changed - maybe that might be the cause as well despite the vaccuming. We don't know what the previous owners/tenants have done.

Oh thank you for the suggestion - I am familiar with rescue remedy and as a matter of fact I have some on hand.

And, absolutely we are going to move - this was just supposed to be temporary for a month or two and as luck would have it I have been so debilitatingly sick since I have been here that I have been unable to move - I have literally been "disabled" with one thing after another with my health but, we will be out of here by at least the New Year; (if I had any more bad luck in my life, I think I would literally just lay down and die - there is just so much you can take)

I am familiar with the bach remedies - I will give her some rescue remedy tonight and get some walnut -

Thank you all for caring - I know there are people who think that non-human animals are not important enough, but for those who feel that way, and there are many, I think they are very empty, cold, and mean souls.

My little girls with whiskers thank you for your kindness.

I'm sure everybody here cares for animals as much as for humans.

I love the idea of Bach flower remedies - because I suspect the problem is not only allergic but also emotional.
Did she "over-groome" before you moved? Cats take such change really bad (unlike dogs).

Water and food should only be served/kept in glass or stainless steel bowls. No teflon, rubbermaid, plastic, etc. Try this first. Water you serve them must be pure like bottled water or filtered water. Chlorine in tap water amongst many other additives can cause allergies.

Does she crave warmth like the sun/dryer/heater/blankets or does she crave cold like, fresh air/cool floors/drafts. Where her skin is bald is it raw, red, scabbed, oozing, etc.?

If you are ill, your pets will be ill. Cats especially absorb whatever energy you have that is not serving your highest good, that is why they like to lay on us, by us, or insist on sleeping near us at night.

You need to change your outlook about your living situation and adopt and attitude of gratitude. It may not be the best situation, but you are there for a reason and in time you will leave and go where you need to be.

To add stimulus to their lives, get them a scratching wheel or scratching post. Wal-Mart has great scratching wheels. Paper bags and paper balls make great toys. Catnip is a natural high and keeps a healthy appetite. I like to place catnip in an old sock or small bowl for them to eat.

Open windows for 20 minutes a day to allow fresh air in.

If licking began after Wellness food was introduced, food may be the culprit. Otherwise it appears to be emotional or environmental.

Clean only with Borax/baking soda and white vinegar. That is all you need. Baking soda is a great deoderizer for carpets.

Excessive licking can also be from boredom and stress. If you are excessively cleaning due to your living situation/not liking used furniture/stress/etc. maybe your cat is manifesting this as well????

Hi and thank you so much for responding - I appreciate your help and time for my little girl -

In response to some of your remarks you should only know how spoiled they are. There is nothing I would not do for my kitties - they have, first of all, many different, cozy, luxurious beds to sleep in - when I get my camera I will take photos and let you all see.

Then, they have always had just Britta filtered water to drink in a large glass bowl... I know about the glass and stainless - even all their eating dishes are "people" dishes which I have bought for them - not the plastic junk with all the chemicals - their dishes are all very pretty china bowls.

As for a scratching post they have three - one flat, one slanted and one pole. And, their cat nip is "organic".... As for their toys, well, there are so many that I have them all in a BIG plastic conatiner - and yes, Boubou, a/k/a Artemis, just loves to play and jump into paper bags - I have also taken two really big, all cotton, men's socks, filled them with polyfill and catnip and tied at the top with a bow. Boubou, in particular likes to grab one and just kick, kick and kick until she is tired, at which point she just lays there holding onto this big sock with her two front paws and the sock going down her belly like one of those "body pillows" they are selling today.

As for the air, I have always, for many years, opened the windows in the morning for at least a minimum of one hour or more to get fresh oxygen into the house, regardless of whether the weather was hot or freezing, like today. I know it is very healthy and that is what I do every day. Also, I use a germicidal air purifier as well -

You think like I do. And, the last thing was the baking soda which in fact I do sprinkle on the carpets before vacuuming.

Now, as for her licking, her tummy is red and without hair but, there is no oozing, or rawness, except sometimes for her little nipples, they can get a bit red.

She has a very loving and demonstrative personality - very courageous, not afraid of anyone and just loves to go from one bed to another - they are all a little different, but warm and cozy - I would say that the other two girls I have are more prone to want hot rather than Boubou, but she does like to be cozy and warm. I don't see her gravitate to cold, at least not now - it is winter and cold.

Thank you and any suggestions or advice are much appreciated.

My kitties thank their "aunties" on abchomeopathy for caring.
