Anorexic cat, please help!

I have a very special cat and he has always be a little strange, not like other cats. It's almost as if he were human. I do not know how old he is as he was grown when I found him, but we believe he is 11+. He is fixed and and orange tabby, has short very soft fur.

Lately he has been eating poorly. :( He has had periods of poor appetite for the past few years, but they have increased in frequency and duration. He is supposed to be on a renal diet as his BUN levels were slightly elevated at his last blood test. But he won't eat that exclusively so I give him lots of different kinds of foods as he seems to tire of them and prefers to have a lot of different tastes. He only eats canned foods due to poor teeth. He has some tartar and has had two teeth removed.

He appears to be not of this world if you know what I mean? And he might start to it and then just walk away, very easily distracted. I have to keep moving the bowl around and putting it in front of him and often feeding him with a spoon. If he still won't eat I carry him around outside for a while and then he usually eats a when he comes in.

We have winter here now and all he wants to do is to lie in front of the fire. He loves warmth.

It's like he is faaaar away, and I have to wake him up and bring him back to this world where we actually have to eat!

I have given him Berberis because of the renal problem and also fragaria for his teeth. It helped at first but now it seems to not be working. What else can I give him? The less he eats the more lethargic he feels so it's really important to get his appetite going and to make him more grounded so that he has an interest in food.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi tusen,

First, I want you to know that I am only a student of homeopathy, and have much to learn myself. But decided to share my thoughts with you as I don't see anyone else responding yet. So here goes:

are there any other changes to the body?

any discharges from the eyes or nose?

are the ears clean?

any vomiting?

vaccinations? has he had all of the normal vaccinations? did he have a vaccination within a year prior to becoming anorexic? (Thuja)

anything unusual regarding stools?

what were the symptoms that lead to the diagnosis of kidney disease?

before this occurred, how would you describe the cat? affectionate? aloof? mean?

as he is eating a lot of soft food, is much of it tuna? if so, it maybe mercury poisoning (Merc Sol)

if you are so inclined, you could get a hair analysis, and see if there are high accumulations of other heavy metals that would need addressing

Thanks for your reply, I'll try to answer the questions as well as I can.

are there any other changes to the body?
No

any discharges from the eyes or nose?
not more than what is normal

are the ears clean?
reasonably clean, some brown spots though

any vomiting?
no, thank god

vaccinations? has he had all of the normal vaccinations? did he have a vaccination within a year prior to becoming anorexic? (Thuja)
no vaccinations, am not an advocate of vaccines so try to avoid that.

anything unusual regarding stools?
not unusual, but always has hard, small, dry stools

what were the symptoms that lead to the diagnosis of kidney disease?
Shivering, fever, wouldn't eat or drink

before this occurred, how would you describe the cat? affectionate? aloof? mean?
Very affectionate, sweet, desires company. Very tolerant.

as he is eating a lot of soft food, is much of it tuna? if so, it maybe mercury poisoning (Merc Sol)
No, mostly poultry

Also, he is an indoor cat.

If it were my cat, and if no one else has any suggestions, I would try Aconite 30c, 1 dose a day for 3 days, and then wait a week to see if there are any changes. For my cat, I dissolve the remedies in a little bit of milk, and let him drink it up.
