Vertigo

I have vertigo caused by permanent nerve damage. I'm looking at Conium (worse with movement) and Aconite (falls to the right). Both cover most modalities, but neither covers all of them. I don't like to use combinations, but they don't work individually. The vertigo is chronic and severe, and presently can only be controlled with Rx medications which I must take every day, so I am thinking of trying those remedies together. Any kind of feedback would be really appreciated. I'm sure there are things I haven't thought of, and I'm about at the end of my tether. Today someone suggested that I look to healing the nerves themselves instead of going after the vertigo, and in this I really would have no idea where to start because the damage is so specific in nature.

Namaste and thank you

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Hmm.. and what caused this nerve damage ?

Tell me about your temperament.

What other diseases have you suffered from since childhood ?

sameervermani last decade
I lost my balance while on a trampoline and came down wrong (onto the trampoline). My shoulder took the impact, but I heard and felt my neck 'snap' a bit. Since my knees and vertebrae typically make a lot of noise I didn't think anything of it, especially since there wasn't any pain.

My temperament? That's difficult, partly because I find it a bit embarassing to talk about myself. I'm generally optimistic, prefer to think the best of people, and find great enjoyment in life overall. I am somewhat restless, though less so than when I was a child (my teachers observed that I had trouble sitting still in class but this did not distract me from my studies and my scores were usually very good.) I have been a student of the Tao for several years now, and this has been beneficial in quieting my mind and curbing my restlessness. I think I'm a bit stubborn, partly due to having no choice at times in my life but to dig in my heels for the well being of myself or my family. People say they find me a gentle, nurturing, and very protective person. I have never intentionally done harm to anyone and am for the most part even-tempered but when I get angry the world knows it. I am slow to anger, but once I reach the point of expressing that anger, it's soon over and forgotten.

M.E. and Fibromyalgia, on top of the vertigo, have slowed me down quite a bit and has caused me to experience varying degrees of frustration and anxiety, and I can sometimes feel rather overwhelmed til I've had a chance to 'digest' whatever is going on and get it into perspective. I tend not to 'borrow trouble' but if I know I will be facing a challenge which I'm not confident is within my range of ability, I will experience a higher degree of anxiety for a time. Friends and family have told me that I tend to fret too much over the people I care about and I believe they are right. I enjoy being around people, but am also very comfortable with my own company and enjoy quiet passtimes. At times I can become very discouraged and slip into a mild depression which might last a day or two.

Illnesses:
As an infant I very nearly died from some kind of tropical disease from which I recovered quickly. (I was told once what it was but don't remember.) At age 4 I had my tonsils removed due to repeated infections. Of the childhood diseases, I had mumps (mild) and chickenpox (again mild, though the itching nearly drove me mad). I was vulnerable to ear infections brought on by exposure to wind. Once into puberty I enjoyed extremely good health (not so much as a sniffle) until I was in my late 20s, when I contracted the viral infection which triggered my M.E. Onset was gradual, and I was still fairly active (refusing to 'give in' to my declining health) at the time of my accident roughly 12 years after onset. The vertigo caused by my fall mystified the many drs I saw for a long time and eventually I ended up bedridden for two years until my present medication protocol was introduced. It is hard for me to measure the impact of M.E./FM on my life as I have a high pain tolerance and am inclined to stubbornly forge ahead when there is something I must do or want very much to do even if I'm feeling very unwell. I have also noticed that I am once again very vulnerable to draughts and wind, which cause left-sided ear and sinus pain and an occasional infection.

I am now in my fifties and am starting to develop a bit of arthritis. It's not much of a bother, but occasionally makes its presence felt.

One thing I have noticed and continue to puzzle over is that my chronic conditions (M.E., FM, arthritis, vertigo) all tend to be right-sided, while acute afflictions such as ear/sinus problems are quite consistently left-sided.

That's all I can think of. This is embarassingly long-winded, so I hope I have answered your questions satisfactorily =)

Okay, so have you tried Conium till now ?

If so, how many doses and in what potency ?

Also, tell me the answers to these:

Do you have a fear of pointed objects ?

Do you have anxious conscientiousness over small details ?

Do you have CONVICTIONS for which you do not argue ,even seeming to agree to other person's viewpoint though internally keeping your own ?

Were you a shy, 'sensitive to reprimand' and somewhat obstinate in your childhood years ?

Have you ever felt a 'hair sensation' on your tongue and then have not been able to find any hair on your tongue ?

Any white spots on nails ? Any crippled or ingrown nails ? on hands or toes ? Is you foot sweat offensive ?

Do you have test phobia or stage fright ?

sameervermani last decade
Also, are the nerves that have been damaged painful ?

Deescribe the exact location of nerve damage and any sensation there.

I tried Conium a few years ago and again recently, this time in a combination remedy as that was what was available to me. I need to purchase more Conium in single-remedy form but have not recently had the opportunity.

I don't remember how many doses the first time ... I believe three/day for 3-4 days. In combination, 30x, two doses/day for four days.

No.

No.

>Do you have CONVICTIONS for which you do not argue ,even seeming to agree to other person's viewpoint though internally keeping your own?>

I will express or act upon my convictions as circumstances require. I am not a confrontational person, and I can respect another person's point of view or beliefs whether I agree with them or not, but if they are in conflict with mine, I will ask that the person not impose them upon me, nor will I compromise mine.

I don't believe so. If I felt I was unjustly scolded or punished for something, I resented it but did not express or otherwise demonstrate my feelings about it because then my punishment would be worse (it was abuse, though not recognized as such at the time). I could be persistent, but I don't think 'obstinate' would be an accurate description. I was for the most part a cheerful, very inquisitive, and outgoing child, and took social rejection in stride when it occurred.

The nails of my small toes are curved and very thick, but otherwise, no.

That would be hard to say. M.E. and fibromyalgia both cause a great deal of pain in my neck and head. Since puberty I have experienced shooting pains (like electric shocks) at the base of my skull, but these preceeded my injury by at least 20 years.

The damage is between and fractionally to the right side of the cervical vertebrae through which those particular nerves pass.If I run my fingers down the side of my neck, I can feel a very slight, soft bulge which is not painful to touch, but if I press, I experience a 'shivery' sensation down my back and will feel queasy.

Hmm.. I am down to 2 remedies..some further questions:

Tell me about your fears.

How sympathetic are you ?

How expressive are you?

Do you get excited easily ?

I'm not enirely sure what you mean by this question. As regards my health, I experience occasional anxiety over becoming dependent and helpless, ending up in a care faclity (loss of independence) or homelessness (loss of income), even though realistically I know that I am not without resources. I tend to worry sometimes about my children and grandchildren but probably no more so than most mothers/grandmothers. I'm also I'm terrified of bears and suffer from extreme arachnaphobia.

Generally speaking, probably overly so. I'm the kind of person strangers will tell their troubles to, and I'm happy when my listening helps. I sometimes have to pull myself back emotionally a little bit so that I don't become completely entangled in their problems and so that the person doesn't become overly dependent, but I believe they are aware that I continue to care and will lend realistic support.

Again I'm not sure I fully understand this question. I can become quite animated if caught up in an interesting topic of discussion. I tend to express myself quite freely as long as it's not in a way which will be hurtful or ofensive to others, and I have many outlets for my various emotions, one example being dance (when my body allows).

If you mean do I become enthusiastic, I would have to say yes. I'm not overtly excitable (as in agitated), but such things as the birth of a grandchild will send me 'over the moon'. I am easily moved by things I find beautiful, and new discoveries will grip my attention until I have absorbed as much as my mind will accomodate. (I'm not entirely sure about the context of your question, so have tried to cover all the bases.)

I don't know if this is at all relevant, but I just remembered that I learned only a couple of weeks ago that my mother used to shake me a lot when I was a baby. I also used to train horses, and got bucked off a few times. I never got so much as a scratch, but I'm wondering now if the damage to my neck has been a slow process, with my tumble on the trampoline the 'last straw'.

I think, I know what is going on here.

Your underlying remedy is Phosphorus which should tackle your FM. I am pretty sure, you will feel a lot better.

But for now, we will start with just 1 dose of Arnica 1M to get the effects of injury out of the way.

So, please take 1 single dose of Arnica 1M , and report in 10 days.

No eating/drinking for 1 hr on either side of the dose.

sameervermani last decade

Could you elaborate?

I am not familiar with that potentcy. I have only seen remedies sold in 'X' or 'C' potencies. (I have occasionally taken Arnica 30x for muscle pain and it has been very helpful in that regard.)

Thank you.

nakomis last decade
I mean, I know how to proceed as I understand the miasmatic process at work here and your underlying remedy.

1M is same as 1000c.
You have to order Arnica 1M online or get it from a homeopathic pharmacy. If you order online, please order Phosphorus 30c and 200c as well.

And, I want to stress that no other homeopathic medicine is to be taken during this treatment.

sameervermani last decade
OK. It will take a while as the remedies will have to be ordered from quite a distance away (I'm in a remote part of north-western Canada); most orders take at least two weeks to arrive.

Many thanks!

nakomis last decade
Okay, I look forward to hearing from you.

sameervermani last decade
I have found a local that can sell me 1M Arnica (she actually suggested higher potentcy) so can likely start sooner.

I am not at all familiar with using the higher potentcies, so just to be sure I understand you, when you say a single dose of 1M, do you mean that I should take a certain number of drops?

nakomis last decade
Great !

If it is a liquid dilution, put just 2 drops of Arnica 1M in 30 ml filtered water (or plain spring water), sip it slowly.

take it on an empty stomach without brushing your teeth.

Do not eat/drink/brush teeth for 1 hour after the dose.

Let me know in 1 week or 10 days after this.

sameervermani last decade
Will do.

I'm curious about something and maybe you or someone can clear it up for me. The person who provided the arnica is a homeopath herself and she said I should take a higher potency (!?) and take it twice a day every day til the remedy was used up. So I googled and came across a huge range of opinions and preferences. Personally, I feel a lot more comfortable with the idea of a single dose, but I am curious as to why the various schools of thought. I suppose this is a bit off-topic and I hope I'm not breaking any rules by asking, but asking questions is the only way to learn.

Thanks again

' The person who provided the arnica is a homeopath herself and she said I should take a higher potency (!?) and take it twice a day every day til the remedy was used up.'

There is the classical (which by the way is the ONLY correct way to prescribe remedies) according the 4 tenets of homeopathy

single medicine

potentized medicine

similar medicine

Minimum dose

and then there is the 'mongrel' way which only came into existence due to 2 reasons:

a) Incompetence of the homeopaths to find a single remedy which covers the symptoms

b) Desire of the remedy making companies to sell more remedies which they cannot do with the 'single' dose approach

A 1M is a very high potency, and a higher one is not needed in your case at all.

Regarding further doses, the homeopath does not seem to uynderstand how these medicines work. These medicines just give a dynamic (spirit like) impulse to the vital force. It is the response of the vital force to the remedy action which cures the person and not the remedy action itself. Once that response has started with a single dose which surely does with a high potency like 1M, all further doses are nothing but interference to that response and will always delay cure or cause undue aggravations.

hope this clears things a bit.

sameervermani last decade
Very interesting and enlightening. I'm especially intrigued and fascinated by your reference to the vital force. I've heard and read about this, but not in terms which really made much sense to me before.

Yes, that does clear things up a great deal. Thank you!

I have just taken the remedy. I must confess to a small degree of anxiety as I don't know what to expect, but it's got to be better than the past 14 years so I'm all for full speed ahead. I do have a few more questions, though, and I hope you will bear with me.

1) How soon am I likely to notice any effect?

2) You mention taking no other homeopathic remedies during this treatment. Is that for the full ten days? I ask because I have an extremely painful earache which I normally treat with homeopathic ear drops. (I can tolerate the pain if needs be.)

3) How sensitive are these high potentcy remedies to such things as odours? (I know to avoid strong odours such as mint and camphor and was careful to air out my apartment before administering the dose; but there will always be any number of everyday household odours.)

4) I have been taking medication for the vertigo for many years; will that affect the action of the remedy?

5) After the hour you indicated, is it safe to resume normal eating/hygiene (etc) habits without it interfering with the remedy?

6) If for some reason I have a strongly negative reaction, is there an antidote? I am aware that some people will feel much worse for a while before they start to feel better, so this question refers to extreme reactions only.

7) I don't know if it's possible to inadvertantly neutralize the remedy at the time it's taken, but if that were to happen, how would I know and what would be my best course of action?

Thank you once again.

1) How soon am I likely to notice any effect?

Hmm.. this varies from person to person, but since it is a 1M , you might only see full effect by 1 to 2 weeks.

2) You mention taking no other homeopathic remedies during this treatment. Is that for the full ten days? I ask because I have an extremely painful earache which I normally treat with homeopathic ear drops. (I can tolerate the pain if needs be.)

Yes, no homeopathic medicines are to be taken. The ear drops are a No as well. All allopathic medicines have to avoided as well as long as they are not prescribed by an MD.

3) How sensitive are these high potentcy remedies to such things as odours? (I know to avoid strong odours such as mint and camphor and was careful to air out my apartment before administering the dose; but there will always be any number of everyday household odours.)

The odours thing should hold 1 hr before and 1 hr after the dose. That is enough.

4) I have been taking medication for the vertigo for many years; will that affect the action of the remedy?

Hmm.. it might to an extent , but we will see.

5) After the hour you indicated, is it safe to resume normal eating/hygiene (etc) habits without it interfering with the remedy?

Yes.

6) If for some reason I have a strongly negative reaction, is there an antidote? I am aware that some people will feel much worse for a while before they start to feel better, so this question refers to extreme reactions only.

Talk to me IF that happens.

7) I don't know if it's possible to inadvertantly neutralize the remedy at the time it's taken, but if that were to happen, how would I know and what would be my best course of action?

It is not possible if you follow the guidelines carefully.

Thank you for your patience; your answers are very helpful.

Very wise =) I don't want to risk second-guessing myself or falling prey to my imagination.

I am not feeling so awful that I want to stop, but I'm wondering if it's normal to feel as if all my worst symptoms have dropped in for a visit. The neurological reactions are the most pronounced, with blinding headaches (identical to the 5-day skull-splitter I experienced with the infection which triggered my M.E.) to extremely poor coordination and cognition.

I hope this is a good sign and means the present misery will lead to future well-being.

Namaste

nakomis last decade
I am also breaking out in a large number of boils and abcesses.

nakomis last decade
Yes, please do not do anything now.

This is pointing to a 'similar' aggravation which happens under the correct remedy, and the boils are pointing to disease coming to outer levels.

Hold tight for 5 days and you should feel a lot better.

sameervermani last decade
I'm very happy to have it confirmed that these are signs that the remedy is working. I thought as much, especially when the boils and such began to surface.

The key symtpom in M.E. is congestion of the brain ... hypoperfusion and inflammation which descends into the brain stem and in exceptionally severe cases, the spine itself. If the remedy is busy addressing these, it would certainly explain the headaches. (I am grateful for high pain tolerance =)

Thank you.
