sudden tickly cough in 2,5 year old

Hi,
my little one started to cough tonight totally out of the blue. It started when he was lying down. Irritable cough. There's a bit of wheezing and rattling in his throat as he breathes and he's swallowing often. Sounds like he's got quite a bit of mucus in his throat that irritates. Otherwise no other symptoms.
We have damp and cold weather in these days. If that helps.
