Cinchona Officinalis

Cinchona Officinalis
(a Peruvian bark or commonly named China)
As per a legend the first European to be cured of ague fever was a lady Countess Chinchon, wife of a Spanish viceroy in Peru. The prevalent practice at that time was blood letting which make patient still weak. But she was cured by the decoction of this fever tree bark. She brought this plant to Europe during 1640s and the plant was named after her name Chinchon with slight distortion as Cinchona. The account of this and such practices in pharmacology fascinated Dr.Samuel Hahnemann so much that he prepared decoction from the bark of this plant and tested on himself and on his family members to explore the beneficial effect of this bark. This simple experiment led him to his famous theory Similia similibus currenter. Which brought him to fame and thus a new system of medicine called Homoeopathy.
