I've gone deaf!

Help. I am sure I am about to go mad. And, sorry to everyone who is already talking on this site about this problem - as I am new wasnt sure where to go.
Back in Oct last year (2006) I suddenly went deaf in my left ear, back and forth to the doctors, who told me to inhale with steam - but I had not other symptoms. Pressure in my head started to build, and no hearing, I then started to have severe dizzy and sickness spells - had never experienced anything like it - couldnt move even to the sink - to be sick!!! Back to Doctor was prescribed sickness tablets, and then later with another doctor was prescribed antibiotics _'in case you have an infection' Time passed, hearing non existent - ringing in ears from day to day changed, sickness because of tablets controlled. Then I saw a speialist who thought it might be meniures (is that how you spell it) desease, had an MRI scan, and put on different tablets. Back and forth, now with a different specialist and having steriod injections into the ear.

I have had two going back this week for a third - but I CANT HEAR. Has anyone had this, and did the injections work. I am getting more and more depressed by the whole situation. My daughter is a musician, I enjoy her playing and follow the band - now I cant hear the TV! If I go into a loud place, am I doing more harm than good, is it all my fault! No one else has gone deaf, the music isnt that loud. Should I have made more of a fuss when it first happened, oh god, I dont know, I just listened to the professionals, and now I cant hear.
These injections are not pleasant, but I keep hoping something will work, but the pressure in my head is awful - and to top it all I am a REception Class Teacher, so working in a busy class of children is terrible because of all the background noise.

Anyone! Any ideas please?

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Dear Waterlott:
I would like to be optimist, but I have no enough information for this.
We only can work properly if you have a very good memory and you are able to tell us all around your loos of hearing.
It's very important to know about time before your illness (symptoms, modalities, etc) and time after with the biggest detail possible.
You have taken a lot of medicines and we can't expect good symptoms from their effects.
Best regards

Hello Andres,

I first went deaf in October, 2006. At first it was just that, I couldnt hear and my ear felt blocked no pain, no other symptoms. At first I waited to see if it would clear. After two weeks I went to the Doctors and he told me to take a sinus clearing tablet and to inhale - I did lots! I still had no other symptoms just deaf, then after a week I went back to another Doctor (now into November) I was starting to feel dizzy, but had not had any symptoms that is until I left the surgery. As I arrived home on that day I got through the door of my house and literally couldnt move, even managing to move just one foot was too much, I felt very very sick and the whole house was swirling round and round - I have never experienced anything like it. I was frightened. The doctor prescribed sickness tablets - but I was being sick and couldnt keep them down. For about 20 hours I laid in bed with a cushion holding my head on either side - I couldnt move at all. Two days later i was up and about and then it happened again, all those horribel symptoms. This time I was trapped as no one was home to get me the sickness tablets and I literally couldnt reach the telephone.
I went back to another doctor who prescribed antibiotics - not sure of the ones but think they were Amocillian 500g. Just a few days later I went back, I was not feeling well, although not dizzy, and i was, as suggested by the doctor taking the sickness tablets each day - so I wasnt being sick.
The deafness came from completely deaf to some hearing returning and this seemed to fluctuate during early and mid November.
I was then referred to a ear specialist. He gave me excersises to do - to help with the balance, told me to continue with the sickness tablets and to take Propranolol 1o mg once per day. I was sent for an MRI scan which was clear.
My hearing deteriorated over December and by January, I really couldnt hear at all.; No dizzy spells, no sickness although on some days I do feel a bit sick, think it might be the medication I take now (as below). Went back to the specialist, the hearing test concluded that my hearing had deteriorated, although to me, I cant hear anything at all.
This specialist referred me to another one - and I have currently had an injection of dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate 120mg/5ml injection into the ear twice (once a week) and am having anothe injection this FRiday. I have also been prescribed Betahistine tabs 16 mg (serc-16) which I take x 3 per day and Dyazide which I take x 1 per day. I have been advise to cut down/out salt from my diet.
I eat a very healthy diet, rarely using any processed foods, lots of vegtables and limited meat - I tend to eat soya (my daughter is vegetarian so most of our food is vegetarian based).
I cant remember ever having had ear problems, I cant remember ever having ear ache - my ears are always clean, little or no wax ever. I have and do suffer with a bad chest - and have asthatic tendancies (as quoted by doctor) these spates of a very very bad cough can really get very bad indeed - I have to use an inhalor and if they get very bad am given steriod tables x6 once per day for usually about 6 days. But this is very rare - has only happened twice in the last three years.
I did have a very emotionally distrured years fromn 2003 -2006 having nursed my mother who had Parkinsons desease, in fact I did damage my back and was quite unwell for a while. I was also off work for several months due to the stress. My mother passed away a year ago.
My mother had menieures desease in her life too - about 1967 and she was so poorly with the symptoms that she had all of the inner ear removed and was then completely dear in her left ear. She, however, never experienced deafness during her time diagnosed with meniures desease - her symptoms were the dizzy, sickness which altered her life. She was put on a salt free diet, which did nothing for the symptoms.

.........goodness, I have gone on. Think that is it. I will be back having my injection on Friday - not looking forward to it, but as I am desperate I will try anything.

Any ideas? Has it happened like this to anyone else?
Help!!

Dear Waterlott:
I've read with attention all you have written, but I can't find any symptoms except: deafness, sickness and dizzy. This helps to the diagnostic of Meniere's syndrome.
But for homeopathy these aren't enough symptoms.
Please, answer the next questionaire and with all information we have, I'll try to give my opinion.
Best regards
Andrés

Hi Andres, I will try to answer as fully as possible.

1. The deafness causes pressure which is more than just in my ear - I have had two days this week where I have actually felt pins and needles and a numbness to the left side of my face. I have also had some discomfort as the rear of my ear, which is noticeable if I put any pressure. I think it certainly is this pressure that is the worse sympston. I find going into large places e.g. supermarkets particularly difficult, it seems the pressure and the deafness are at there worst then. The pressure seems to change from day to day.
2. I think as above its the pressure causing the problem, I then have to concentrate so much to hear that I end up with headaches and feeling very tired.
3. I know I am beginning to feel quite depressed about this situation. I saw my mother go through it and never imagined it would happen to me. My main interest is music - listening to it has changed so much that I dont know How this will effect me in the future. Also its this swinging in the unknown - tomorrow more steriod injections but I havent had any improvement from then and they certainly are not something that is easy to cope with.
4. Its like someone has pumped my head full of cotton wool then when there is no more room they have pushed it too much. The pressure is definitely giving the pins and needles I wrote of above, which is quite scarry as why is my ear causing a sensation like this. I have also had a few sensations of pain in my right (good ear) I dont know if I am imagining this, if this ear stops working I will be completely deaf - so perhaps is just in my mind.
5. It was last October, 2005. I have really thought about this and cant remember any symptoms. However, in September I did go to a health farm and went in a 'floatation tank' which is like floating in the dead sea. At the time I didnt lke the sesation of the water in my ears as I was laying back in the water - I have had a very stressful time over last year or two, nursing a very sick Mum with Parkinsons and she had dementure, after Mums death by father was seriously ill and I ended up back in the caring role - in fact at one time I stopped counting after 50 visits with him to the hospital. With dad he had severe hallucinations so it was a very immotional time trying to contain him in his home environment. However, through all this I did not have a problem with my ears.
6. It definitely is worse first thing in the morning and also it seems in the evening. Sometimes I am having to get up in the night as the pressure and noise in my ear wakes me up
7. I just dont know. Sorry! Certainly loud noises and I think the cold, like the wind does a bit, do I am wearing hats!
8.I do think large spaces, where there is the background echo - but sitting here now typing this, is my own room, I have the most awful pressure in my ear, and I dont know why. The TV is on, I can hear it but muffled.
9. Dont know really, but even temperatures seem to be best.
10. I am quite an easy going person, usually I am happy with life, this is changing how I feel.
Before a thunderstorm I can 'see' it coming - I can often see the electric in the air, if that makes sense, I also have a headache before a thunderstorm and sill know if one is coming (my mum was the same)
Yes I do like being consoled, but only in situations where things are really bad, usually I am the one who consoles others.
I not like very bright or flashinbg lights, I have quite an acute sense of smell.
No real habits.
We are a very close family, my children although grown up are still a big part of my life and my husband is a very supportive and caring person.
11. I think my fears are that I will not be able to hear again - just like m mum. I do have very vivid dreams but rarely bad - I can also wake up and return into a dream if I wish to.
12. I love savoury, salty foods like crisps. I love seafoods - any type, oysters, crabs, mussels. I am not a big meat eater, although I do eat chicken and occassional red meats.
13. Normal thirst, I do try drink plenty of water.
14. Normal hunger.
15. I do not tolerate white wine - gives me cystitus, also vinegar (although I do like it). Dairy produce can cause me to cough, but not badly.
16. I dont really swear much, although up until a few weeks ago, I beleive I was having hot flushes associated with the menopause, these have stopped now.
17.
Normal bowel movements.
18. Currently not that well, I tend to wake and not be able to get back to sleep. Usually on my left side.
19. Yes, everything is fine.
20. No
21
I think I told you about the serc tablets I did find I was feeling sick, but this is ok now.
22. Mother - menieures, Parkinsons, dementure.
Father - diabetic, had a heart attack.
23. Nearly 6 foot, average build and weight.
24. I think I might be post menopausal as I have not had a period since last August.
.....Phew, I hope I have answered ok.

Thank you for all you attention.

Dear Waterlott:
Thank you very much for your trust.
Thanks God you are a very realistic and the symptoms you have written are very minucious.
Well, in my opinion, we can try to cure your deafness taking MANGANUM METALLICUM 9CH (sometimes it appears as MANGANUM only).
I ask to you to take three pellets of Manganum metallicum 9CH twice a day during one week. You should take the remedy 30 minutes before awake up, and when you go to bed.
Passed this week, please tell me how do you feel and how is going your symptoms. If you feel some annoyed effects, please reduce the two takes to only one, and if the effects persist, then write to me and stop the medication.
Don't worry, you and me are working hard to cure your ailment.
Best wishes
Andrés

Thank you Andres,

Will it be ok to take these alongside the medication the Doctor has prescribed for me?

I take Serc X 3 per day
and x1 of the diuratic.

Trouble is, I cant really not take the Serc because it stops me having the dizzy and sickness - as a class teacher, I cannot afford to have these symptoms at all!!

If you think its ok - I will get what you suggest.
Last FRiday I had the third of the steriod injections into the ear. I also had another hearing test which showed the very slight improvement from the week before was not longer there.
Since this third injection I have had not improvement, although I am told it can take up to four weeks if anything is to happen.
It is all quite distressing - I think its the uncertainty of not having my hearing again.

Thank you again, I will wait for your confirmation that it is ok to take these alongside the prescribed medication.

Regards.

Dear Waterlott:
I understand you very very well, because I am teacher too.
SERC is an allopathic medicine for vertigo and Meniere's syndrom.
Diuretic are used generally to mantain your Arterial Tension in low parameters.
I propose to you the next:
Take the homeopathic prescription, and if you begin to gain a lighty amelioration on your deafness, then you can leave these allopathic medicines slowly.
Best wishes

Dear Rajuk:
First of all, It would be better you begin a new thread, posting this case as new, because when the posting are acumulated on the threads, is very difficult to drive well.
In other hand, if you open a new thread, more homeopaths can see and you can get more opinions and advices.

In second place, Homeopathy works as a complete therapeutic, but it isn't able to cure anatomic problems, genetical illnesses and some kind of degenerative illnesses. If your friend have an accident and the anatomic structures or the auditive system was damaged, may be impossible to restore his capacities.

So, if you want several opinions, the best is you expose the case as complete as you know and we try to study it.
Best regards
Andrés
