Equisetum hyemale. Scouring Rush. A rush growing in damp soil in Europe and America. N. O. Equisetaceae. Tincture of fresh plant chopped and pounded to a pulp.

The chief effects of Equisetum are found in the urinary organs. Pain in the kidneys (especially right), in the bladder and urinary passages. Constant desire to urinate, and passes large quantities of clear, light-coloured urine without relief. Pain in bladder as from distension. Retention and dysuria.

especially in women during pregnancy and after confinement. Enuresis. Wets bed at night.

when he dreams he always sees a crowd of people. Equis. has Severe dull pain which does not lessen after urination.

irritation of the bladder, especially in women. Linaria Vulgaris Linaria has enuresis, with frequent painful urging to urinate, causing the patient to rise at night (Farrington). It relieved loss of control over bladder and rectum in a case of general paralysis. Carcinoma uteri is said to have been cured by it. Pain in sacro-iliac joints. agg. From pressure or contact.

moving. sitting. Eating amel. pain in temples.

lying on back amel. pain in back continued motion amel. pains in back and knees.

Equisetum Hyemale is sometimes successful in cases which are not relieved by Cantharis Cantharis. There is as much inclination to urinate as with Cantharis Cantharis, and there is pain in the bladder, as if too full of urine, which must be voided in order to get relief from both pain and pressure, but urinating does not satisfy and he must soon go again. There is burning in the urethra when urinating, but there are larger quantities of urine discharged than with Cantharis Cantharis, which has characteristically very small amounts, but often repeated, even but a few drops at a time. Equisetum, like Chimaphila, sometimes shows excess of mucus, and it is also very useful in enuresis. Both Chimaphila and Equisetum need further proving to draw out their characteristic. Equisetum sometimes has severe pain at the close of urination. (See Berberis Vulgaris Berberis, Nat Mur Natrum mur., Sarsaparilla Sarsaparilla, Thuja Thuja).

Frequent inclination to urinate, with pain in bladder as if too full, which must be relieved; normal quantity at a time, sometimes excess of urine; igeron has cured epistaxis, with congestion to the head, red face (Melilotus Officinalis Melilotus) and febrile action. Haematemesis, with violent retching and burning in the stomach. Bleeding from haemorrhoids, with burning. Haemoptysis and blood spitting. Haematuria, with stone in the bladder and uterine haemorrhage. The only marked symptom in addition to the haemorrhage that should lead to its selection over other remedies of this class, especially in its haemorrhages from the pelvic organs, is the marked violent irritation of the rectum and bladder. Here we must remember also Cantharis Cantharis, Lilium Tigrinum Lilium tig. and Nux Vomica Nux vomica.

Dose

Tincture, to sixth potency. A decoction, teaspoonful doses, or the tincture in hot water, is found useful to allay irritability of urinary tract, calculus, dysuria, etc.; also for pleuritis effusion and dropsy.
