General

Elaps corallinus, Merr. (E. venustissimus, Spix.; Vipera ^Vipera corallina).

Common names, Cobra-Corallium Rubrum ^coral, Brazilian Corallium Rubrum ^Coral Bothrops Lanceolatus ^snake.

Preparation, Trituration of the venom received on sugar of milk.

Swelling of the right cheek, with small red pimples beneath the skin, followed by large round tetter-like spots.

7 P.M. (nineteenth day). The redness of the face was better the next day towards noon. Swelling of the face in the afternoon, especially of the right side of the nose (twentieth day). On the next day, the swelling of the face lasted till 10 o'clock, with increased redness and swelling under the eyes.

the pimples in the face gradually disappeared, but could still be felt under the skin.

the redness was less at 8 P.M. (twenty-first day). The next morning, there were red spots in the face, which was puffy (twenty-second day),.

GENERAL SYMPTOMS.

At the slightest opposition, the body shivers and the blood boils, with prickling (sixth day),

Complete paralysis of the right side, with inability to rise in the morning (fourth day),

Disposition to faint away (third day),

Faintness, on stooping (fourteenth day),

Faintness, on vomiting mucus; she could scarcely remain in bed (eleventh day),

Faintness, with sweat (third day),

The right side is numb and is if paralyzed, from the shoulder to the knee (third day),

Sensation as though she was attacked by apoplexy; all the blood seemed to stand still and to be collected in the head, with cold hands, afterwards it seemed as though the blood streamed from the head, or from the tips of the fingers into the body, better on being up (eleventh day),

Changing position is painful; he would like to be always sitting or lying (third day),

Rheumatic pain, on moving about (fifth day),

Rheumatic pain, sticking, intermittent, ceasing for several minutes, in the whole left side; commencing in the limbs, at 4 P.M., the pain disappeared about 6 P.M. with mental exhaustion and great indifference (sixth day),

Shaking chill in the evening, followed after half an hour by burning heat.

the chilliness was felt internally, as if in the bones.

the skin hot, with thirst.

dull headache, on the left side, at 9 P.M., and a feeling as from boring in the eyes from within outward.

the fever lasted the whole night till 10 the next day (thirty-third day),.

Similar to snake-poisons generally. Has very marked black discharges. Cold things disagree. Desire for sweetened buttermilk. Nausea and vomiting. Prostrating diarrhoea of consumption. Acidity of stomach, with faint feeling. Sudden pain in stomach. Spasm of oesophagus; pharynx constricted; food and liquids suddenly arrested, and then fall heavily into stomach. Spasms followed by paresis. Cold feeling in stomach. Fruits and ice-water lie very cold. Right-sided paralysis. Must have oscillatory motion. Rheumatic constitutions. Ear, nose and throat symptoms important.

Elaps corallinus. Brazilian Corallium Rubrum ^Coral Bothrops Lanceolatus ^Snake. N. O. Elapidae. Poison pressed from the venom-sac of the living Bothrops Lanceolatus ^snake and triturated with sugar of milk. Higgins used the gall of the Bothrops Lanceolatus ^snake,Lachesis ^Fel Elapidis Corallini.

Elaps is distinguished from the other Bothrops Lanceolatus ^serpent venoms by the pre-eminent blackness of its discharges and haemorrhages.

black ear-wax. Characteristic symptoms are Fruit and cold drinks lie like ice on stomach and cause a cold feeling in chest. Sensation as if all the blood were collected in head. E. V. Moffat has found Elaps 6 almost a specific in chronic naso-pharyngeal catarrh, with greenish crusts and subjective disagreeable odour. Rumbling in ears as of thunder. Sensation in brain as if shaken. Sensation as if food turned like a corkscrew on swallowing.

as if intestines were twisted by a cord and strung together in a knot. Pains in the longs (especially right) are very marked "Sensation within chest and at sternum, as if pleurae were pulled off and the lungs violently drawn apart." Sensation as if a heavy load, iron bar, or weight on parts. Fluids roll audibly into stomach. The glands and skin of axilla are affected. (I cured with Elap. 200 a very old-standing case of irritating rash in axilla (right) with recurrent suppuration of axillary glands,) Periodicity is marked. Rest amel., exertion agg.

but walking amel. epistaxis, pain in stomach and lungs. Lying on abdomen amel. pain in stomach. Many symptoms are agg. at night. (Sudden deafness at night with roaring and cracking in ears.) Dreams of dead persons. Warmth of bed agg. Great sensitiveness to cold draught, wind, wet weather agg. Horror of rain. Touch agg.
