Anxiety - Newbie!

30 year old male. This story may be a long one, so bear with me please. :) When I was a teenager I experienced a few panic attacks, but nothing major. When I was 23 years old, I experienced my first BAD BAD BAD bought of anxiety. I didnt know anything about ANXIETY really at that age. I didnt know what was going on with me. I thought I had the flu or something. Nothing sounded good to eat, my heart was racing, I felt like crying. Basically I went 6 nights with little to no sleep, my heart rate kept going up day by day, it reached 120bpm constant, I was exhausted, and finally went to a Dr. who told me it was Anxiety. He gave me Ativan and Lexapro. I didnt take the lexapro, but did start the Ativan. Took it every night for a week or 2, then weened off. Anxiety seemed under control, but I was still taking it all in, 'how could I suffer from anxiety? why so bad?' Long story short, I took Ativan on and off (yo yo use) for 4 years. By Dr. allowed this somehow. In those 4 years symptoms got weirder and weirder, sometimes just more awful than the anxiety i 1st experienced. Finally 2 years ago, I was experiencing the WORST symptoms ever, and I just knew it couldnt be anxiety. I was have constant vertigo, could not walk straight, felt like i was falling through the floors when walking, crying spells from hell, electrical zaps all through my body. My Dr's response every time was 'take more ativan'. At this point I was taking 2mg. That's a lot. I used to take 0.25mg. Finally, my mom looked at me one day and said 'you are a druggy'. She didnt mean it in a harsh way. But she realized that I was popping these things more and more as the years went by. I don't live with my mom. I'm married to my beautiful wife and our 2 beautiful children. I just happened to be out with my mom this night for dinner. But she made a light go off in my head. I thought to myself 'What if my medicine has been my problem over the past 4 years with these mystery symptoms?' I got online and found a forum of people who are on benzos like ativan, xanax etc. who were going through the SAME thing I was. I suffered for 4 years from TERRIBLE symptoms that WERE NOT anxiety related. What was happening is that since I took Ativan on and off, not consistently, example: take for 1 week, ween off for a week, not take for 2 weeks, high anxiety and mystery symptom occurs, reinstate drug for 1-2 weeks, stop, mystery symptom, high anxiety, reinstate. These CONSTANT ups and downs. I was going through basically a mixture of withdrawal and tolerance withdrawal. I was also gaining tolerance to this GABA drug, and my brain was physically dependent craving MORE. I even seized one night in my sleep. My Dr. didnt believe me. I TOTALLY did. It was scary as hell. I finally found a psychiatrist who believed that I was addicted to ativan and he helped me ween off. This was over 2 years ago. He gave me Remeron (aka Mirtazapine) to take to help through the ativan withdrawal. I took 2 months to slowly ween off ativan. I then slowly weened off the Remeron. It was quite simple I thought. I suffered a bit for a few months from the benzo withdrawal, but I slowly got my life back!!! I was the old me! It was a miracle! I was not having any anxiety, and everything seemed great! However, sleep was still an issue from time to time for me. So I had a thing of Remeron in the kitchen cabinet that I would take, thinking it was harmless. It helped me sleep when coming off ativan. So the past 2 years, I would self medicate with Remeron. Small doses, to help with sleep and it did help my overall mood too if I was stressed out. Well, I took it strangely over the past 2 years. I would take it for a month, then ween off, fearing addiction and other withdrawal. Then I'd go 2-3 months without it, then I'd find myself in the same spot with sleeping issues, and or recurring canker sores and such, and I would start Remeron again, small dose, for a month or 2 and then ween off. My canker sores would stop, so would stress, and sleep was amazing. This is where my story is most important to me... I went 3 months without any Remeron, those months being April, May and June of this year 2013. In July of this year, we sold our house and bought another one. It happened all so fast, and was SO stressful. I started having weird symptoms of anxiety. I felt the urge to gag a lot, and just felt like I couldnt snap out of this depressing state. I couldnt relax... kept sighing all the time. Finally I broke down and started Remeron. I only planned on taking it for a month, then getting off. But I then thought to myself that I needed to stay on it til the move. I ended up staying on it this time for 3 months. Thats the longest Ive ever taken it. I then tried to ween off, and all hell broke loose. While I was on it I was good! When trying to decrease my dose to almost nothing, I would get crazy adrenaline surges through my body. I could NOT sleep. I then would shake and tremble EVERY night in bed, my heart rate was 114-120bpm. It was torture. I went to visit the old psychiatrist who helped me get off ativan 2 years ago, hoping he'd say it was remeron withdrawal, b/c It had to be! It was TOO intense to be ME. After not seeing him for 2 years, it took him 30 minutes of seeing me to tell me that this was ME and that I NEEDED medication the REST OF MY LIFE. At this point I felt SO badly, was pacing the floors, that I started to second guess my self... and thought 'this must just be me...'. He sent me home with Serequel 50mg extended release. I told my sister who is a nurse. She told me that I do NOT need to be taking that. I followed his orders and tried it one night. It gave me a hallucination in my sleep. It was the scariest thing EVER. I then prayed to God, and God was telling me to 'WAIT THIS OUT. THIS IS NOT YOU. THIS IS WITHDRAWAL. HOW CAN THAT MAN DIAGNOSE YOU AND TELL YOU YOU NEED DRUGS FOREVER IN A 30 MINUTES SESSION.' I waited it out, and sure enough my symptoms SLOWLY went away, day by day. The adrenaline shocks were the first to leave, thank God! I researched, and research shows that Remeron suppresses the adrenals! So in withdrawal, it's natrual for your adrenals to explode basically, and over release, like they were meant to. I felt bad, b/c it was a rough 2 weeks of withdrawal. The beginning was SO intense, I actually broke down and got a script of Xanax prescribed to me. I am BENZO-WISE, so I knew I could only take a couple rescue doses to get some much needed relief, but that was IT! And I did just that. I also took 1 ambien one night. Other than that, I have not touched a drug for 31 days now. I was feeling pretty good the past couple of weeks, but 2 days ago, I started to feel yucky again, anxiety, 2 canker sores in my mouth, neck stiffness and pain, tense feeling, wired feeling, and my most annoying symptoms is what I would guess would be is an overactive subconscious mind at the moment. The past couple of nights, I fall asleep fine on my own, but if I wake up around 2am, and have this mind chatter going on that I can't shut off. It's like I see random words in my heads, and they make no sense, and my subconscious voice is saying them. Like I can hear my own voice in my head. NO I'm not HEARING voices, it's my subconscious. But it's DRAINING. I then get random imagery in my head, and it's just hard to fall asleep. I know I'm not crazy. It's obviously either anxiety or my brain still adjusting to no medications. I want to go the homeopathic way of healing my body and brain! I'm going to start by one thing at a time. I have started Epsom Salt baths, about 3x a week. I want to start drinking it too. But just a little at first and see how I react. I must add, ever since quitting Ativan over 2 years ago, I have suffered from pretty much constant muscle twitching ALL over my body. Random times, involuntary, painless, but crazy little twitches. Some big. My Dr. says it's nothing to worry about and that it's just called BFS, caused most likely by stress. But it happens when I'm not stressed too. Weird. Okay, where do I start? lol.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
if you are confused. simplified drug use:

ativan 2007-2011

Remeron on and off use 2011-2013

Present: Nothing

Symptoms: feeling of being wired, but not super anxious. Mind chatter at night. Lower appetite. Recurring canker sores. Muscle twitching all over. Stiff/sore neck/back. Some minor GI issues, cramping from time to time, gassy, burpy. Stinky gas (sorry lol.) Headache. Increased allergies.

Part of me worries all these years of Dr's poly drugging me, it has PERMANENTLY DAMAGED MY BRAIN. But I've read that it is not likely possible. And that my brain WILL HEAL with time.

I would also like to add, that looking back. The very first time I experienced BAD anxiety, and I didnt know why... I think it was really b/c of things going on in my life. But Dr's don't ask you that. They treat symptoms, not life problems. You see back then, I was a young guy, newly married, just had a baby, just bought a house, and just lost my grandmother, and my brother was a drug addict that we were dealing with... I was dealing with all of these things, all very close together in time. That's A LOT for someone to go through. But, I was too young to even know. I thought I was dealing with everything just fine.
