Shortness of breath

I am 33, and over the last 5 years have developed very slowly a shortness of breath during the summer months in times of high humidity especially. It is now just the beginning of spring, and I am already starting to feel a tightness in my chest. I have been to an allergist, but am hesitant to take meds that supress my immune system. Homeopathics have always worked well for me. My symptoms occur at any time (its not better or worse in the morning or at night) though I am never woken up by it. I have never had allergies or asthma. Last summer it would get so bad I would feel dizzy. The best way I can describe it is like I start to take a deep breath and go as far as I can, but feel like I have to stop and raise my shoulders to get the breath inhaled...?
Any suggestions?
