Happy Toddler not growing

Hello,
My 18 month old son is not gaining enough height ( < 31 inches) and weight ( < 20 pounds) to stay in percentile charts for his age. Here are his details:

He was born a little early at 36 weeks ( 5 pounds,18 inches). He continued to gain weight real well until 6 months (16 pounds). But
between 6 months and now he has only gained about 3
pounds of weight. He is also small in height and looks like a 12 month old rather than an 18 month old boy.

He is still breastfed. I started solids at 5 months
but he didn't show any interest in solid food up until 12 months. AT 18 months, he will have some food ( table food) if I take him out for a walk in the stroller and distract him. He refuses to take whole milk in cup/bottle. His day
time nursing sessions are down to 1 and he still
gets up 3-4 times at night, most of times to nurse but some time he just gets up and needs comforting.

He is a very active and mostly happy child. He is
very curious about things and a explorer by nature. He has a good vocab and can
sometime manage upto 3 word sentences.

His dentition is late. In fact he didn't any molars
up until 17 months now he has 3 but no pre-molars. He does suffer from constipation on and off. In all we have a very happy baby who loves to talk to people, learn new things but doesn't like food. He has fine features, big bright eyes with long lashes. So I wonder if he has some of phos in his constitutional type?

Can some one suggest a remedy for increasing his appetite and help him
gain weight/height. Thanks a bunch!

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
It does seem like a Phosphorus child.

Buy Phosphorus 6C in pellets form.

Dissolve 2 pellets of Phos. 6C in a 500 ml bottle of spring water. If you leave 2 pellets in the bottle for about 20 mins , they will dossolve by themselves. Then, turn the bottle upside down gently a few times for them to shake.

One teaspoon from this bottle using a disposable spoon is 1 dose. No eating or brushing of teeth for 1 hour on either side of this dose. Give him 3 such doses for 1 day . Space the doses by 2-3 hours.

No doses after these 3.

Then, report status in 5 days after these 3 doses.

Hello Dr Vermani
I followed your instructions and gave him 3 doses 2 days back. But now my son has a cold. He had a cold 6 weeks back that ended up in an ear infection and 10 days of antibiotics.
I really want to avoid antibiotics this time. Is there any homeopathic medicine I can give him? He had clear nasal discharge yesterday but today he is just stuffed and no discharge. His mood is oscillating between normal happy self to bouts of incessant crying ( very unusal for him). His sleep last night was even more restless than normal.
Please help ASAP.
Thanks a lot.

Wait for a few days as this sounds like an aggravation.

This should pass and once it is over, you should see improvements.

In chronic treatments, we do not interefere with acute remedies unless the crisis is very very serious.

Hello Dr. Sameer
An Update on my son. Its been almost 2 weeks since the 6x phos dosage was given to my son. He had a cold the first week followed by stomach flu like symptoms in the second. He has been throwing up after almost every meal and his bowel movement is watery and seemingly painful. His appetite is next to zero and he has no interest in his previously desired nursing sessions either.
Is this expected/normal. I am extremely worried about his indigestion. Please help.
Thanks

Hmm.. then it is certain that PHOS. is not the remedy for your son.

Is a clingy child where the mother has to be close all the times ?

How is his thirst ?

Or is he an indepedent child who plays with anything fancied ...with a mind of his own ?

Arjunsmom,
Did you give 6c or 6X potency ?

Pankaj Varma

PANKAJ VARMA last decade
We gave him 6C potency. As for clinginess, let me cite examples. Arjun will cry for 5 min when I leave him at his babysitter's place but then is playful after I leave and remains happy for the rest of the period. As per his babysitter he is happy kid who likes to play with spoons and vacuums and myriad stuff.
When both parents are home, he wants to make sure some one is around and will continue playing on his own once reassured. When home alone with Mom, he is content to play on his own as long as he knows Mother is here and not leaving for work. When surrounded by strangers ( as in a prty) he does become clingy, but is Ok with people he is familiar with.
Please advise. Thanks

I wonder if its worth mentioning here that my son has a mind of his own and can be termed as strong willed(obstinate?). Not sure if thats a normal toddler state of mind,

arjunsmom last decade
Can you please give an example of his self-willed behaviour ?

Also, please tell how is his thirst .

Sameer

sameervermani last decade
He is not very thirsty. He will take couple of sips of water when offered. He will ask for water ocassionally but nothing out of ordinary.
As for his strong willed nature, lets say if he wants a toy, he will ask for it repeatedly. If refused he will pretend cry/fuss ( very unusal given his happy go lucky nature). He has to be distracted in order to make him forget. Also I sent his latest pic in case that helps in evaluation of his constitutional type. Thanks

Please help. My son hasn't been able to keep any thing down for 3-4 days now. It may be a stomach flu or it could be related to Phos. Any ideas?

arjunsmom last decade
Please stop Phosphorous immediately. Start Ipecac 30C and Belladonna 30C at 1 hour interval alternately(Ipecac first, then Belladonna next hour and then ipecac next hour and continue) for 1st day and report back.

Thanks for the pics.

Does he crave for a lot of physical contact inorder to feel loved like hugs or kisses ? How strong is his need for affection ?

Does he like to be rocked/comforted to sleep ?

Can we say , he is an easy to manage child ?

Is he very sensitive to pain in general ?

Have you noticed any sweats during sleep ?

Does milk aggravate him in any way ?

Does he have hiccough?

Does he have any fears you have noticed ?

Does he have something of a stare when he looks at new persons (a strong prolonged stare) or does he have a shy/timid response to new persons ?

Alternations of remedies is against the basic principles of homeopathy. It will only muddle the case further.

Hmm.. it might not be related to Phos , just his underlying complaint coming to the surface.

Sameer.

I am not of the view of single remedies any more as I have seen tremendous responses to medicines being administered together. Since the child is young, I don't go with the concept that the disease is too deep rooted for the medinces that are given together will cause damage.

Regarding the underlying complaint coming to surface, we cannot wait for the child to get worse from the position that he/she is already in and hence a little drastic dosage from my side.

Tremendous response to medicines being administered together is a point I won't even argue against. It is entirely baseless.

And, even if it is related to Phos. , we have to pick among the anti-dotes.

I am thinking of Calc-c and Puls. as possible next options. But, that will depend on the replies.

1. His need for affection is not overwhelming. As the only child he is quite loved by both parents. He welcomes hugs and kisses, and recently has started responding back with the same. But he doesn't seem to be in constant need for physical contact when in familiar surroundings. Instead he talks, picks up words absorbing everything his parents tell him.

2. He likes to be rocked to sleep. In fact he wants to nurse for sleep ( both during day and night). If not hungry he wants to be rocked.

3. He is an easy to manage child except for his eating part!

4. He is not overly sensitive to pain. When sick he will cry but despite sickness his mood is happy

5. He did sweat a lot while sleeping when he was younger. The pillow used to be soaked in sweat. Havent seen it in these winters but he def doesn't want to use any coverlet/blanket at night. Kicks it off even when deep in sleep

6. He doesn't like whole milk. Infact he doesn't take cow's milk. He is primarily nursed and I try feed him yogurt and cheese during his meals. In the last 3-4 days he has thrown up each time he has eaten yougurt. Only thing he is keeping in banana when given to him in very small amount.

7. Yes he has hiccoughs on an off.

8. Difficult to answer. We havent figured any fears yet. We cosleep and leave the night light on so cant say he is afraid of dark

9. He is shy when meeting up new people. He offers tentative smiles when he meets new people.

Looking forward to your thoughts.

Give him 3 doses of Pulsatilla 6C at 30 mins gap.

Method of dosing is same as before.

Report back with any changes.

Good luck

Sameer.

Update on my son's condition. I gave him 3 doses of Pulsatilla as recommended. He hasn't thrown up today and showed some interest in food. He was little clingy the whole day and wanted to be held.
But I am so relieved that he is no longer throwing up after every meal.
Thank you Sameer! Will keep you posted if his appetite gets any better or not.

Here is an update on my son's condition a week after 3 doses of Pulsatilla 6X:

1. There is a slight but definite improvement in his appetite. He will show some interest in food one or two times a day. He still takes forever eating his food ( 1.5 hrs for a banana). He takes time chewing solids and prefers semi-liquid food

2. He is still a little clingy now and has been resorting to crying when his demands are not immediately met but that could be typical of all toddlers.

3. He has a deep dry cough for last 3 days and unlike past he doesn't have a runny/stuffed nose. But the cough is irritating enough to wake him up.

Could 2. and 3. be due to Pulsatilla aggravation? Am I missing something here?

Thanks for your suggestions in advance.

arjunsmom last decade
Did you give him 6X or 6C ?The prescription was for 6C.

It is unusual for the clingyness to last this long. The cough might not be related but the clingyness certainly is.

So, are you sure, he has never been clingy since birth ?

Oh Dear,
You are not alone, my daughter has the same problem she hates food. It takes 3 hrs to feed 1 banana that too after great distraction like taking her to play area or making her watch her favourite programes.

Do you know toddlers need at least 1000 calories per day for them to grow.

You have to offer him many varieties of food and make them taste it by distraction if he doesn't spit it out continue to feed by distraction untill he is full but please don't force feed him.

Remember there is no medicine in this world to improve appetite!

If you want you can test for growth hormones level and take treatment if necessary.

The only way to improve his growth is kindly feeding him very nutritious food by distractions.

Thanks
