Lithium, Effexor and Metabolism Problems

In January, doctors put me on Effexor XR 150 mg and Lithium 600 mg. OH MY GOSH!!I have gained 15 pounds in one month and have had a ringing in my ears for 2 weeks. ON MOnday, the doctor advised me to go off of the lithium for 2 days and then start taking only 300 mg. Well, it's been 4 days and I still have the ringing in my ears. I then researched these meds and found out that lithium can cause massive weight gain because it shuts down your metabolism. AND that Effexor can have some toxic effects, including weight gain. Plus I see tons of postings everywhere about Effexor withdrawal. Please help: I think these meds have screwed up my metabolism.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
About Li-Carbonate: Is first choice remedy in bipolar I as only remedy but if you dont have a blood check of the levels is posible that with 600 or 300 the therapeutic level is not reached .The weight gain with it is usually a combination of water retention and antithyroid hormone properties of Li+.It remains to be seen if the risk/toxicity are worth.
About Venlafaxine (effexor): Its new but in the long run you would need to take a little more as time goes and of course you wont like to skeep a dose, abstinence develops quickly with this.
If you have the opportunity, time and can afford it, find dr. who can prescribe only one homeopathic remedy at a time....

good luck.

I do not have bipolar disorder. The small dosage of lithium was prescribed as a means of 'kicking' in the Effexor more rapidly. I totally agree with regards to the effects of Lithium. It appears that based on my preliminary research that water weight gain and lower metabolism are the effects. The doctor has taken me off of Lithium for now. He wants me to take only 75mg of Effexor XR in the morning. To tell you guys the truth, I was on Effexor for a month, I went off of it for a week, and 'thankfully!' there were little if no side effects. I'm reluctant to take it again, even if its in a smaller dose. My diagnosis is depression/anxiety.

Hi Leahsa, Glad to hear your Dx is less complicated than i Tought.Besides this is a forum of 'alternative' treatment i must tell you that if the anxiety is predominant over the depression the choice of AD could be the old MOAI.-Abstinence with EFX develops quick because is a short half life compound, but in the same family there are other antidepressants that lack that problem, ie. fluoxetine )prozac(

good luck
