newborn thrush?

Hi,
I'm looking for a remedy for thrush. I'm not 100% sure this is what I have, but if it is I'd like to stop it before it progresses.

My symptoms are very sore nipples. I've nursed my baby for 3 weeks. Symprtoms worsening in last week.

Had IV antibiotics at birthd due to c-section.

Nipples are light pink in color and feel itchy and they sting. There is a severe sharp pain when baby latches on, which then reduces to a discomfort through the remainder of the nursing period.

Nipples feel worse when warm and moist. Feel better when exposed to air/cool air.

I fall a sleep late at night and wake up 2-3 times through the night to feed. Baby and I sleep deep and soundly in the mornings, til about 11-12.

I had a bad case of PP-blues the first two weeks. Felt listless and unable to deal with all responsibilies. Also felt a lot of guilt not being enough for my 3 year old and my new born. I'm in a better state of mind now. Helps to be outside in fresh air.

Has 24/7 help from my mom which is priceless.

I crave cold drinks. Water and milk. I eat cereal with milk several times a day. Also crave protein. Get is mainly from chicken and nuts.

Baby's symptoms: very fussy and gassy (new in past 3 days) also spits up more than before. Cries before passing gas or stool.

Can't see white in mouth, but redness around anus.

Used to be happy and comfortable. Now unhappy and seamingly uncomfortable.

Likes sleeping on an incline and on his side (don't let him unless I'm awake).

Had a lot of mucuos regurgitation after birth x1-2 days with spitups that then resolved.

Nurses well and is gaining weight. Nurses a long time and enjoys it.

Last few days seems to gag after burping and then spits up. Not projectile. More it just seaps out.

I appreciate any advice and comments. Have not tried any remedies yet, I don't know which one to try.

Thank you so much! Pia

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Dear Penople

Since you are breast-feeding, you can consider taking silicea 30 ONLY three doses on a single day and observe for a week if it helps.

Kellymom is a great website for breastfeeding information. Please also consider calling your local La Leche League leader or a lactation consultant.

I know that thrush is generally treated with probiotics in mom and sometimes baby as well. You also have to 'go postal' on all your stuff you touch, wear, use, etc. I think some people use vinegar and other sterilizers.

It can continue for a long time, so it's best to nip it now if possible.

If you do have it, you might consider diflucan in the infant if the baby has it. Generally the doctors prescribe it in a sugary solution, which feeds the yeast. You can swab any thrush medicine into baby's mouth, you can also do this with yogurt. Sometimes you have to double up and do the dose twice as often as the doctor recommends, but do half the strength I think.

I know this is a homeopathy board, but I wanted to make sure you had the resources on breastfeeding with thrush as well. You might also look up breastfeedingmadesimple (a dot com) and make sure the latch is correct. Sometimes an oversupply or really great letdown reflex allows you to feed baby enough even if the latch is bad. I have had sore nipples from my second baby, even though I know what I am doing. You have to work at it sometimes.

I think that if you have thrush, the nipples would be shiny.

For sore nipples (look it up on kellymom too) you might also try lansinoh lanolin, wet tea bags, air drying, and no bra.

Also another good website is promom (dot org) for breastfeeding help.

I am interested to find out if there is a homeopathic remedy for thrush.

Thank you so much for the great info! We're already doing alot better. I haven't tried any homeopathics, but nystatin for me and baby seemed to do the trick. Again, thanks for the good advice!!

coconut oil works for thrush - it takes a few days but all you have to do is put some on your nipples (if your breast feeding) and some in the babys mouth (paint it in there with cotton swab) about 4 times a day.
