Open letter to Joe De Livera

Dear Dr. Livera,

Please help me. Please see my previous post under swollen legs -- I really need help -- I believe it is lipodema and lymphodema since I have since joined a support grop and over and over see myself in each post. Per the last post in my topic -- kuldeep had suggested that you might be able to help me. I would be indebted to you so much and thank you from the bottom of my heart. My depression over this grows with each day.

Thank You so much

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
I regret to inform you that I have never treated a case of Lymphedema before. I have just read an article on this disease which I shall copy below for your information and mine.

The solution to your problem as I see it, is to ensure that the movement of blood in the body is promoted and I can think of just one remedy that I have used to help other ailments which are roughly similar to your own with some success. The remedy is Arnica and the problem that I have is to decide which potency will help your case. I have used 6c for Eczema and 30c for Cellulitis and feel that your case would respond to 30c in the wet dose.

This is made up by getting the liquid remedy of Arnica 30c or if this is not available the 30c in pellets and inserting just 2 drops or 3 pellets into a 500ml bottle of spring water which is shaken hard before a teaspoonful is sipped 3 times daily. I believe that you should see some response in under a week when you should experience some improvement in your present condition.

I would appreciate if others who read this thread can also give us their suggestions to help this patient in distress.
It is hoped that this will not lead to another argument about my Joepathy.

I shall list a few questions that I would like you to answer below:

Are you M or F ?
What is your age and for how long have you suffered from this ailment ?
What treatment have you had for it ?
What is your Blood Pressure ? Heart Condition ?
Are you mobile ? For how long can you be on your feet at any one time ?
Do you have any pain in your legs ? Acute or constant chronic ache ?
Do you have any gastric problems like hyperacidity ?
How much liquids do you drink daily ?
What is your normal diet ?

After reading the information below can you give me an insight with more data on your ailment which may be of use to me to help you ?

Please note that I am not qualified and am not a doctor.

What is lymphedema?

Lymphedema occurs when lymphatic fluid builds up in the soft tissues of your body, usually in an arm or leg. The lymphatic system consists of lymph vessels and lymph nodes that run through your body. Lymph vessels collect a fluid that is made up of protein, water, fats, and wastes from the cells of the body. Lymph vessels carry this fluid to your lymph nodes. Lymph nodes filter waste materials and foreign products, and then return the fluid to your blood. If your vessels or nodes become damaged or are missing, the lymph fluid cannot move freely through the system. The fluids can then build up and cause swelling in the affected arms or legs.

There are two types of lymphedema:

• Inherited lymphedema, or primary lymphedema, in which you are born lacking lymph vessels and nodes. The swelling usually appears during your adolescence and affects your foot or calf. A rare form of primary lymphedema develops in infancy and is called Milroy’s disease
• Acquired lymphedema or secondary lymphedema, in which an injury to your lymphatic system causes lymphedema. It is much more common than primary lymphedema

Some people develop chronic lymphedema, which can last for the rest of your life. Chronic lymphedema can be a difficult form of lymphedema to treat. Swollen limbs become vulnerable to infection. Any kind of injury to the skin, such as a cut, scratch, insect bite, or even athlete’s foot between your toes can cause a severe infection, which physicians call lymphangitis. Lymphangitis affects the connective tissue under your skin. Repeated infections can cause scarring that makes the tissue vulnerable to more swelling and infection. This leads to the tissue hardening, called fibrosis, which is characteristic of advanced chronic lymphedema.

What are the symptoms?

You may not develop symptoms immediately. Sometimes symptoms occur 15 or more years following an injury to your lymphatic system. When symptoms occur, they can include:

• Aching, weakness, redness, heaviness, or tightness in one of your limbs
• Less flexibility in your wrist or ankle
• Tight-fitting rings or shoes

What causes lymphedema?

The most common causes of secondary lymphedema are surgery or radiation treatment for certain types of cancer, such as breast and testicular cancers. Other causes of lymphedema include surgery on the blood vessels in your limbs, other surgical procedures like liposuction, and burns.

What tests will I need?

First your physician asks you questions about your general health, medical history, and symptoms. In addition, your physician conducts a physical exam. Together these are known as a patient history and exam. Your physician may also measure your affected limbs.

To confirm a diagnosis of lymphedema, your physician may order tests, including one or more of the following:

• Lymphoscintigraphy, which uses a low-dose injected radioactive substance to trace the flow of lymph fluid through your lymphatic vessels
• Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which uses radiowaves and magnetic fields to detect patterns in your internal tissues that are characteristic of lymphedema
• Computed tomography (CT) scanning, which creates images of your internal tissues from a series of cross-sectional x-ray
• Duplex ultrasound, which uses high-frequency sound waves and Doppler technology to show vessels and real-time blood flow on a screen to rule out a blood clot in your leg
• Lymphangiography, which uses contrast (dye) directly injected into the lymphatic vessels, is now used less frequently

How is lymphedema treated?

If you are at risk for developing lymphedema, you can act to prevent it. If you have mild lymphedema, you can act to keep the condition from worsening. You can take the following precautions to prevent or minimize symptoms:

• Clean your affected limb regularly. Remember to dry it thoroughly and apply lotion
• Wear gloves while gardening and cooking
• Shave with an electric razor
• Don't go barefoot
• Do not cross your legs when you sit
• Do not carry a handbag with your affected arm

In addition, if you are at risk for lymphedema, avoid having injections and blood pressure readings performed on your affected limb. You can also wear a special bracelet or necklace to notify medical personnel of your risk for lymphedema and the risk for complications, such as infection.

Physicians have not agreed about how to best treat chronic lymphedema. Some people have benefited from manual lymphatic drainage. This treatment uses massage to stimulate your weakened lymphatic system. Other treatment methods include special exercises that you can do while wearing compression stockings or bandages, and the use of external pumps to aid the movement of fluid through your body. A treatment that combines these treatments with lifestyle changes is called complex decongestive therapy.

Medication cannot cure lymphedema. However, your physician may prescribe medications to treat associated conditions. For example, antibiotics play an important role in combating infections that can worsen lymphedema.

Your physician may recommend surgery to remove excess tissue if your limb becomes so large and heavy that it interferes with your ability to move it.

Treating your lymphedema requires your participation. Because lymphedema can be very painful, you may benefit from individual counseling. You can also join support groups that provide practical advice as well as social and emotional support.

In following is a copy of my earlier post with all of the personal information. Since then I have also joined the yahoo support group. I thank one and all for all responses -- haven't had a chance to read everything in detail yet -- but I can't thank you enough for all of the responses. Yes, it is very painful -- both lympedema and lipodema and very depressing and I sooooo want to thank you for all of the caring.

over the past few years gradually my feet have been getting swollen -- so that I could get a pair of shoes and 6 months later they would never fit again; then my ankles and now my legs have all gotten very very swollen. Laying down doens't help it unless its a period of 3 days which I just can't accomplish unless I'm sick -- which I seem to be quite often.

Redness in the face, purple nose just ocmes on its own - no explanation. Multiple migraines, cholesterol of 100 (yes 100) BL -- usually 90/60 now coming more often 120/70 - 130/80. Fluctuates between low and higher. Can't have my legs down for longer than 1 hour or very red, tight and constrictive. Have been on the sequential circulator pump - helps somewhat -- but then comes back. This is in both legs, although lately left is getting larger than right and left has also had for past 25 years a fat globule at top of leg which look like a pouch! -- Used to model, beauty pageant placed, then in college got 2 week measles twice, also has TNTS surgery could not find pituitary tumor -- apparently my pit blew out from stress at age 32 - 1991-- and heart had stopped during surgery. In 1982 became legally blind in 7 days with inability to see field test, had 2 CT scan for pit tumor then -- nothing.
11. Non Diabetic - father was Type 1 from age 15, died at age 54 from complications
12. Desire sour/salt
13. Thirst - more lately
14. Tongue -red
15. Current BP - 128/85, Pulse 92 -- just finished eating dinner (9:30 PM PST) - 20min ago
16, 17, 18. What exactly is happening; How do you feel ?;ow does this affect you
I am having a harder and harder time to walk, burning feet, legs, can't get any pants, shoes, lasix - made small dent only for short period of time. harder to breathe lately too - more labored. I hate the way I look and although I keep a happy disposition on the outside -- really want to cry and sometimes have feelings of worse.

I'm too young to be going through this for the rest of my life -- and I've been coming more and more depressed but nobody knows this -- expect this board.

Not on any bedicine -- excpet lately due to another cold. - I hate to take medicine and usually forget - similar to my Mom.

My Mom apparently has never had an appendix and Dr. Sharma you answered me earlier with respect to my Mom (carotid artery ) - which turned out to be the right vertebral artery instead. But the dolochos and quilla hispanica seem to have helped a lot -- she was put on Lotrel 10/20 reduced with 1 1/2 moths to 5/10 (actually used 10/20 - 3 times a week and then M & W only and now on diazapan 80mg. ] -- thank you for your help there -- but Mom also always had low blood pressure until this.

The doctors have told me that I'm not in the books -- and this has come from several doctors -- who are both the heads of their departments and their schools.

Please help -- I have no insurance - because I'm self-employed. The multitude of tests they want me to undergo are soooooo costly and since I grew up with homeopathy -- I always return home. They did find that I had a left pole kidney cyst -- but I was told that was normal. Of Course. Of yes, with the measles -- I went into Code Blue from a reaction to the compozine.

I can forego food and often do -- but no weight loss. I crave salt, spicy or sour much more than sweet - only once in a while I get a taste for sweet --- and then I get heartburn from it. Chocolate tastes sour to me as well as milk and ice cream.

I am considered an very outgoing person and the leader for everybody and also as someone nicknamed me 'Mama D.....' for everybody.

Had endometriosis and 2 laparascopic surgeries for that as well as bleeding 2 times for 6 mo straight.

I usually have complications wtih surgeries and/or medical procedures. Have 2 herneiated discs at L4, S1, and have fallen multiple times

My background is medicine and law and currently work in law, taxes and notary -- - but don't have lawyer attitude -- so never became one.

Please let me attach the photos privately -- they are quite embarrassing.

Thank you one and all and a special thank you to Dr. Sharma

33. Attached here your photographs of the affected area.

Attached is the letter that I sent last year -- I'm so sorry that I was so delinquent in writing back-- but once again I was trying to take care of everybody and let myself go.

ave a very unusual problem. Just turned 47 yesterday and have been suffering from increasingly swollen legs (on both sides for about the past 15 years with the last 5 years getting progressively and markedly worse. (sometimes to as much as 12 inches around). I tend to be cold, even with an average body temp of 97.2 F, am very tall (6'3', heavy -- (they also tell me this is also related to my problem -- since I cant seem to lose weight no matter what).. I also have low cholesterol - 119 and the highest I have ever been is 149, my blood pressure is high of 120/70 sometimes over 80 and usually 90/60; I have a very red complexion and quite often a purple nose (but im not a drinker)-0 I have had pituitary surgery -- but my pit 'blew out from stress' - no adenoma found when they went in, then I gained more weight; apparently I have a heart murmur; left pole kidney cyst (they tell me that is normal); 2 suspected benign sebaceous mammary cysts and 1 they dont know about yet - whether benign or not; I have had the 2 week measles twice and I dont usually show on tests -- usually inconclusive. My doctor thinks it may be my adrenals. I cant afford a battery of tests and I cant go on not walking at my age -- please please please can anybody help me?? with homeopathy, etc., I tend to be a very sensitive person and worry a lot about others. I think that just about covers the gamit -- but can add more if needed.

PS. I grew up with homeopathy.

Thank you sooooooo much.
