This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Along with washing the hair in the hottest water the child can tolerate (which makes the lice jump ship), you can give staphysagria in low potency. You might want to consult a professional homeopath if the child has a propensity for contracting lice in the first place.

I did a little experiment a few years ago. After what seemed like something from a a bad horror move, the ping pong effect happened in my home as well as a few other friends whos kids were all friends and school mates. I armed myself with 2 kinds of commercial headlice preparation, and a bottle of full strength teatree oil i picked up at local hfs.

I found 3 live lice, and placed them on 3 separate coffee filters. I then added a few drops of each of the two shampoos, I used NIX and R&C and finally a drop of tea tree oil on the 3rd. The teatree treated louse died INSTANTLY, never to move again, while the other two struggled all night long. One was still alive the next morning.

I felt that undiluted teattree oil was too strong for kids, so i mixed it half and half with babyoil, and combed it through everyones hair, then tied up their hair in a grocery bag and an old towel. I left it on for about 4 hours, it is just too stinky to tolerate for much longer than that. Shampooed it out, and sat down for several hours in the sunlight looking for nits. Section by section, I used a pointy chop stick beacuse i didn't have a rat tail comb. On long hair, a tiny pair of scissors to cut one single strand of hair directly above the nit does the trick. The nit is easily lost by pulling it down a great length of hair, so cutting the single strand it's on makes it easier to collect by brushing.

Fortunatly, I live in Canada and winters are great for bagging the bedding, pillows and mattresses and setting them outside to freeze for at least 24 hours, but a home deep freeze works too. if you can't freeze your mattress, atleast wash it and set it aside for a week unused. vaccuum all furniture really well, and cover everything people sit on with clean sheets right after treatment. And no visitors.

A good hot wash and a super long hot dry should in theory, kill all the bugs on your clothes and bedding and towels. If you're faithful with taking the time to check everyones head for nits after each shampoo for several weeks after the first treatment, and keeping the living and sleeping areas super clean, and teaching your kids to never share hats or brushes with anyone, including their own family, then you can pretty well guarantee a successful deinfestation.

Hope this helps,

betty

glad I could help moddy. I can guarantee the teatree oil will kill the live lice, but not sure about the nits. I can't stress how important it is to do regular nit checks for several weeks after, as they are so easy to miss. Bright daylight really helps, and you'll find most nits are found behind the ears and at the back of the scalp. (the warm spots)They are really stuck on the hair shaft, like glue, usually quite close to the scalp, so it's easy to tell the difference between a nit and say a piece of dandruff.

The nits sure are the toughest to handle...the only way to have them out is pick pick pick...i was just hopin there wud be medication that loosens their grip on the hair so that they just fall off!!!wishful thinking!

According to J.H.Clarke

'The hair to be washed daily, and after each washing to be bathed with a lotion of Sabadilla Q(Mother tincture), an ounce to the pint.
Internally give Nat. m. 6, every 4 hours.'

Of course if there's no specific constitutional propensity.

Thanks maheeru,
is the lotion the final rinse or one needs to wash the hair with water after some time?
this affects the nits also??

ordinary white vinegar is supposed to loosen the nits grip on the hair shaft.

I never worried about that though, and appreciated that the nit was so stuck on the shaft. It made it much easier to distinguish the actual nit from dandruff. The nits aren't so glued on that they never come off. Pinch them between your thumb and middle finger and just slide it off, or...cut the hair strand above the nit

have you tried the white vinegar...?

Initially leave the hair rinsed with sabadilla lotion for sometime which you are comfortable and then rinse it with water. After seeing the response of therapy and how comfortable you are with this you can leave the hair unrinsed for more time.

Homeopathic method 2:

Apply staphysagria Q on head two to three times a day till the symptoms are relieved. (Just like oil)
----------
After the symptoms are gone:
STAPHYSAGRIA 30c – given daily for three days may help reduce the likelihood of re-infestation.

Alternative Method 1:

Getting rid of head lice is a three-step process. You must kill all the live lice, check for and remove all the nits by combing and manual nit picking, and you must do a thorough job of cleaning the infested person's belongings and home environment.
Doctor Lawrence Schachner of the University of Miami School of Medicine has found what he believes is the best, fastest natural remedy for head lice yet: petroleum jelly. This cure works not by poisoning the lice (like the prescription drugs available), but by smothering them.
Dr. Schachner recommends slathering petroleum jelly on your child's scalp and hair in the evening before bed. Then put a shower cap on the child and let him sleep the night with the cap on. By morning, the lice and knits are smothered. The down side? Children must do repeated shampoos to remove the petroleum jelly, so their hair may look oily for a while.

Alternative 3:
# If your child has lice, wash the hair as normal every other day for 8 days. Each time use a conditioner, then comb, comb, comb with a fine toothed lice comb (available from a chemists) This removes both adult lice and the eggs (nits)
# Two commercial products that are safe and effective are Head Nurse from www.barefoot-botanicals.com and Nice n Clear from www.lice.co.uk

some unbranded commercial products for removing nits in this link:
http://www.comparestoreprices.co.uk/by-make/u/unbranded-heal....

Though I must admit am not familiar with these commercial products'. Now Moddy you are open to choose any one according to your suitability.
