Yeast In Dogs Ear

When cleaning ear, dark brown yucky stuff, lots of it. Vet said it was yeast and RX antibiotic and ear wash to do cleaning. Am trying to avoid the antibiotic. Any suggestions. Both ears. Dog is 7, golden retriever.
Thanks

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
I forgot to mention that the ears stink to high heaven!

She got the yeast after a swim in the bag, goldens are pretty prone to this type of ear infection when the ears get wet.

She is on thyroid medicine, which now I find out is too high and needs to be decreased. She also has had skin rashes, so bad it was treated with antibiotic and steriod.

appetite is fine, she is on verus senior food with nupro vitamin supplement on the food 1x a day.

She shakes her head to get the yuck out.

dog was a rescue, so we dont know much about her past. I think she has been on thyroid med for a year now..was 2 pills a day, but recent thyroid test was high, so we are backing down to 1 pill per day...

I do know that she had a bad skin infection prior to coming to me.

She has been on lots of meds, antibiotics and steroids and probably others as well before coming to me.

discharge is thick and brown, smells awful...there is lots of it. Culture at vet confirmed yeast.
Thanks

with regard to the diet, we have discussed this prior and you suggested the raw meat diet, but that is not affordable for us. She is on an all natural food, Verus. Here are the ingredients. It looks pretty healthy.

Ground Brown Rice, Ground Grain Sorghum, Lamb Meal, Ground Oats, Rice Bran, Poultry Fat (preserved with Natural Mixed Tocopherols, Citric Acid, and Rosemary Extract), Flaxseed, Chicory Pulp, Alfalfa Meal, Kelp, Natural Flavors, Salt, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Vitamin A Acetate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Ascorbic Acid, Riboflavin Supplement, DL-Methionine, Niacin, Calcium Pantothenate, Choline Chloride, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (Source of Vitamin K Activity), Folic Acid, Biotine, Thiamine Mononitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Sodium Selenite, Calcium Iodate, Iron Amino Acid Chelate, Manganese Amino Acid Chelate, Zinc Amino Acid Chelate, Cobalt Amino Acid Chelate, Copper Amino Acid Chelate.

how does ear yeast fit in with skin condition? (how long after..etc)

John Stanton last decade
she has been on antibiotic and steroid for the skin condition..I have tried sulphur, but it doesnt seem to work.

She has several spots on her legs and arms that she itches and they have bloody scabs. The itching is not primary right now though.
The skin did clear up nicely on the predisone..

Her ears are red inside.

The yeast is from water sitting in her ear after a swim in the bay...it was probably about 3 weeks from finishing the predisone.

Hello all !
new to this forum and this seems as good a place to post my question as any.
we are the proud rescuers of a 9month old Newfoundland(at time of rescue). She is now 3 and the Queen of the Couch.
The issue today, a crusty bumpy rash on the inner earflap adjacent the ear canal. very itchy to the point of effecting her ability to walk. meaning, its hard to walk with your back foot in your ear ;).. no discharge to speak of, more scaly flaky from the effected site. both ears. Black wax is pretty thick and we use a simple OTC dog ear cleaning solution.
it truly looks like somthing that could be handled with a 'cream' or 'ointment'. but i would rather try getting some advise about me pup, before slathering her blindly, ya know?
as far as smell, really no more than one would expect from a hot waxy ear. no infection that can be seen, no red over sensitive areas besides the effected area, and only when she gets a good scratch in.
the itch is the prevailing issue. most her day and night is spent fighting the erge to scratch.
help, the one i love is in need.
Trio
