sunscreen

I am looking for a safe sunscreen for the whole family. I have two small children. Is any sunscreen safe to use or is it best to safeguard from long sun exposure? Kevin trudeau says it is bad to use sunscreen. I am confused.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
You must use a sunscreen for you and your kids ESPECIALLY important for young skins - exposure to sunburn at young age has been proven to increase risk of skin cancer later on in life. Look for PABA free, hypo-allergenic sunscreen with a high SPF . If you are in US try Baby Blanket range, available on internet. 12-3 is when UVA/B rays especially strong so cover up with white cotton clothing.

Anyone that says it's 'bad' to wear sunscreen is highly irresponsible.

its 'bad' to wear sunscreen and think your 'safe'. I personally dont wear it and avoid prolong sun exposure.

plus I heard commercial sunscreen has chemicles that actually promote cancer cells. not sure on that one but I think I heard it from Kevin Trudea.

So what does Kevin Trudea recommend in place of sunscreen?

Rice bran oil- I use it on me and my kids the last few years it works well.

The first time I tried it I thought 'yeah...we'll see!' and I just kind of slapped it on sloppily- and I had burn lines from the places I had missed!

That being said I think a natural tan is the best protection and I just use the rice bran oil at the beginning of the season to gradually get help my kids get tan without burning.

I also use Aubrey's organic on my nose and cheekbones if I will be out all day and I need something very powerful on certain areas.

Rice bran oil- its hard to find but my health food stoare orders it for me. One bottle lasts me a few years (I keep most of it in the glass bottle in the fridge and just keep a small squeeze bottle out for our use).

Enjoy!

Hello Rebecca

Wow! Great info.

I did find the Rice Bran oil online.

What is Aubrey's organic? Is that their sunscreen you're referring to?

Apparently, they make makeup also.

Thank you Rebecca!!! I will do so. I felt so unsafe with even those sunscreens that claim they are natural. From everything I have read so far on it-you shouldn't put anything on your skin that you can't eat because it is absorbing into your system. Rice bran would certainly be great and the cost sounds minimal if it is long lasting. This is the answer I was looking for.

Oh-Pat-Kevin T recommends getting sun exposure-it is healthy for us and our eyes need at least one hour of sun-no glasses. That is how we get Vitamin D into our system to absorb our nutrients. Also if we are out for an extended period of time, wear long white clothing and hats to cover up.

Rebecca,
One more question-isn't tanning a sign of skin damage? Or is it natural and good for us? It is hard to let go of all the info we have grown up believing.

Rebecca

Can you tell us the name of the company that makes the rice bran oil that you use?

There seems to be several companies that make it.

Thank you

Allison and Pat-

I don't think the sunlight is unhealthy for us. I just don't believe the design would be that flawed!

Understandably, things are not as they were- there's less ozone to filter the UV portion of the rays. I think alot depends on where we live and the angle of the sun in the sky at a given time.

We're kindof self-regulating, that way, tho. You know, it feels fabulous to me to lie or work in the sun mid-morning, whereas if I did that around high-noon it would make me feel yucky and tired pretty soon. Also I think every BODY is different. My younger sister does not like being being in the sun- therefor I tend to think her body is constitutionally less equipped to handle it.

A tan I see as a sign of natural protection going on- the melanin rising to the surface to prevent damage, not damage itself not. I know there are different theories, and that is the one I believe. But I believe in moderation too.

I mean look at my strawberry plants. They *thrive* in the sun, but too much and they would shrivel up and crunch!

Of course alot of that depends on their internal environment, too. Do they have enough water, antioxidants, etc. JUST LIKE US :-).

Sunburn is obvious damage- they say it takes about 6 months for the skin to totally heal from even a mild burn and I believe it.

But I do think sunscreens might be one of the factors in causing skin cancer. The way the chemicals interact with the rays on the surface of the skin may do harm. As someone pointed out to me a long time ago, she said 'look at all the old native american indians (without sunscreen)- they're wrinkled and leathery, but they don't have cancer!' Not sure if that's exactly true but it did start me thinking.

Important to note- the sun has important healing properties, too. My dad, a regular MD, used to send me out in the sunlight to clear up acne, rashes, and scars (and it worked). I've used sunlight to amazingly heal hemmorrhoids and tears from birthing babies. I have an infrared sauna that gives me tons of energy and helps heal many ailments, using some of the same far infrared rays that are found in sunshine. I think its like alot of things- it has stuff that we need, as well as stuff that will hurt us if we get too much. But I think of it as friend rather than enemy. AND...People (those for whom moderation is an option) seem to ~enjoy~ it- it brings out the happiness in alot of us. Theres something to be said for the health benefits of *enjoying*!

The rice bran oil I use is Loriva brand. I would look for one that is unrefined and cold pressed, if possible, and smell it when its fresh so you know if it goes rancid- that would be bad on the skin and it probably won't have any preservatives. And the Aubrey's Organic I was referring to is the sunscreen. It is expensive but a little goes a very long way.

Anyway, enjoy!

Thank you for your input. I appreciate it. I already ordered some oil. I too love the sun and always tried to avoid it based on what I thought was true but I think I will enjoy the sun a little more this summer. Thanks!

Don't over do it on the vanity but enjoy it for it's health benefits.

The sun is nice when we need warming up.

Might want to check out this website that sells medically accepted clothing that offer 30 SPF protection.
