75000 dead in Earthquake

We who live in Sri Lanka have suffered the loss of over 30000 lives by an official count last December 26 2004 by the Tsunami which created havoc when it suddenly invaded our shoreline. The unofficial death toll however was estimated to be about 50000 with over 1 Million displaced. In contrast the loss of life in Muzzafarabad and its surrounding towns and villages in Pakistan seems to be infinitely more as you will see from the extract of an email I received which I have copied below.

The least we can do is to pray for those whose lives were lost in this earthquake and also for the suffering who have been injured or have lost their family.

I copy this email below:

Dear Mr. Joe,

Thanks for mail and concern. Situation is much worse than what is being told officially to the media. Governmental agencies are estimating in their own way while others are doing it their way.

Newspapers of today are counting over 75,000 deaths and 4 million homeless so far and I think they are right. The cities which have been flattened 60 to 70% had lot of population. Innumerable dead bodies are scattered all over these cities and towns, and have started rotting. How many of them are still buried, no one knows. Work on many buildings has not started yet. Many villages have disappeared altogether, whereas some villages have though not disappeared but hardly anyone there has lived to tell anything. In the capital of Pakistani held Kashmir, a whole market having dozens of shops and residential houses has disappeared. No one knows where it has gone. Some think it has been swallowed by the earth but some think it has been wiped out by landslide. This was supposed to be the posh area of the city. A serving Major General of the army who had his private house in this area/market, specially went to see his house but failed to find/locate where his house was. Certain areas have not yet been accessed even after three days due to road blocks. Such areas are out of telecommunication too. No one exactly knows what has happened there. Main flow of relief operations is towards main cities and towns. Smaller villages which used to have a few hundreds of population have not drawn the attention yet. Since I am generally familiar with the affected area, I am estimating that death count would go above 100,000 when all the areas are reached. The figures are not accurate because in entire South Asia, there is no system of keeping the data up to date. So estimate of population of any city or town is based on data collected many years back. So, probably exact figures may never be known. In certain areas, relief operation has started only today, after 4 days whereas some unfortunate areas are still looking towards the sky. Tremors have been felt till yesterday, Monday.

We are grateful to all those who are helping us at this time of dire need. This morning I received email from an American friend. I quote, "I keep wondering if we may reach a point of so many "natural" disasters that we can no longer afford to fight each other, and will have to be friends with everyone, and put all our resources into helping each other....". Probably he is right.

It broke my heart to read the news copied below that another earthquake of 5.6 intensity was felt in the early hours of this morning (our time).

The report reads:
A magnitude 5.6 earthquake IN PAKISTAN has occurred at:
34.87N 73.13E Depth 10km Wed Oct 12 20:23:38 2005 UTC

I have been following the BBC news on TV which gave graphic descriptions of the suffering that those poor people have been suffering since last Saturday in the intense cold at night and to think that the affected area has again had another major earthquake is heart rending to even consider.

Joe - thank you for passing this on, the media obviously don't report the whole scale of things!
My thoughts and prayers are with those affected.

Which is the main charity operating in the area and what help are they giving?

I've heard that after the tsunami, people got 5 sets of cooking pots, from 5 different aid agencies, rather than one house from all the agencies combined.

So I think whichever agency has the largest presence is the one to donate to. Which is it, anyone?
