re: sleep apnea and Diabetes

I am anxiously seeking natural approaches to treating sleep apnea. I am a 59 year old female with a long history of sinus congestion and snoring and have recently been told that I have sleep apnea. I have Diabetes and hypertension and now begin to suspect that they are all connected. Please advise.

Hi Dr. Kadwa, thanks for your interest and help. Here are my responses!
Patient ID: 59 and Female - ID Cat in the cradle

Please answer the following questions in a descriptive manner after careful analysis and recollection of previous experiences and happenings.

1. Describe your main suffering? Sinus and chronic nasal congestion. Most of the time suffer from Post nasal drip which is thick and does not come out easily. Have found that I am allergic to mold in buildings and this can make things worse. Also because of the sleep apnea, believe that this has contributed to the development of Diabetes and Hypertension.

2. What other physical sufferings do you have in your body? Often have headaches, sometimes frontal sinus and sometimes pain in the temporal area and will eventually be all over. Note that seasonal allergies can precipitate headaches. Do not have any auras with headaches, no photophobia, sonophobias or Vomiting. If I do not treat the headache quickly, will rapidly progress and be present for 7-10 hours! Recently had a bout of Colitis- first episode ever which has almost resolved.
In the past, was very susceptible to viruses. Diagnosed with Mononucleosis as a teen, developed Viral Meningitis twice, Viral Pericarditis and ? Chronic Fatigue syndrome. Work in health care but have tried to maintain a healthy diet, exercise, not smoking and rarely consume alcohol. Have food allergies to: sometimes cheese and have begun to suspect milk. Also mushrooms and red wine.

3. What mental sufferings / feelings do you have associated with your physical sufferings? Get depressed if not feeling well. Will cry and sleep. Try to remain positive and read a lot of inspiritational literature. Feel very upset about having diabetes and hypertension when I have tried to remain so healthy with diet, activities etc.

4. What exactly do you feel when you are at your worst? Physically- headache, sinus congestion, Mentally- lethargic, depressed and malaise.

5. When did it all start? Can you connect it to any past event or disease? Don’t believe I started having any sinus problems until in my twenties. Cannot recall any specific event except starting my first job as an advanced practice Nurse Practitioner and had just earned my master’s degree.(both of which I was very happy about!).

6. Which time of the day you are worst? Sinus and congestion are often worse in the morning and evening. Have to really push myself to go to work, etc.

7. What are the things which aggravate your suffering and which are those which ameliorate the same? My sinus congestion and headaches assoc. with it, including fatigue are associated with exposure to mold, seasonal changes including rain and poor ventilation.

8. Do your think your sufferings have relation to any external stimuli (like, change of place) or any internal biological changes in the body, like, menses (in females)? Only the things mentioned above.

9. When do you feel better, during hot weather or cold weather, humid or dry weather? Difficult to say. Can’t really say one over the other. Live in the Northeast and grew up here with all four seasons. Lived in Florida for 4 years but found lots of problems with sinuses/allergies down there.

10. Describe your general mental set up? Are you Moody, Arrogant, Mild, Agreeable Changeable, Nervous, Suspicious, Easily offended, Quiet, Arguing, Irritating, Lazy etc. I am a very social, outgoing person who is generally agreeable and pleasant. Am very sensitive and can’t become agitated if feel threatened or disrespected. Am a social justice person and always advocating for someone who needs assistance. Very independent and bright, ambitious and success oriented. Seen by others as someone who listens, cares and you can count on.

- How do you feel before or during a thunderstorm? Doesn’t really bother me.

- Do you like being consoled during your tough times? Yes, for sure.
- Are you sensitive to external stimuli like smell, noise, light etc? Sometimes smells but have lost a lot of sense of smell due to the congestion and sinus problems.

- Do you have any typical habit or gesture like nail biting, causeless weeping, talking to one self etc? No.

- How do you feel about your friends, family, your children and especially your husband / wife? Not married and no children (both which cause great sadness for me). Love and honor family, friends and nieces and nephews. Always “go the extra mile to help them”.

11. What are your fears and do you dream of any situation repeatedly? Fears: some heights, flying and driving can be an issue. Great fear of driving over bridges which has extended to highway driving. Often dream that I have to get somewhere but keep getting delayed by unavoidable situations. Also dream of trying to find a bathroom in public places, travel etc and cannot find one that is CLEAN!!

12. What do you crave for in food items and what are your aversions? Aversions: mushrooms, sauces, most fried items. Likes: some carbohydrates like potato chips but don’t indulge in them very often, not big on red meats although will eat once in a while. Like fish, salads and fruit such as apples, grapes, grapefruit, oranges, cherries, raspberries and watermelon. Sometimes crave sweets

13. How is your thirst: Less, Normal or Excessive? I have great thirst and drink a lot of fluids daily. Have always been a big consumer of water, esp. cold water. Do not like milk to drink.

14. How if your hunger: Less, Normal or Excessive? At times, I want to eat everything in site, at other times not so much. In general, it is average, eating 2-3 meals per day and try to eat balanced meals.

15. Is there any kind of food which your body can’t stand? Hot dogs, sausages, some pork., most cold cuts.

16. Is your sweat normal or less or more? Where does it sweat more: Head, Trunk or Limbs? I believe that my sweat is about average. Can become sweaty if it is hot in the room. Tend to like to sleep in a cool room but covered. When I do sweat it seems more in my head and neck.

17. How is your bowel movement and stool type? Lately, more constipated but can have periods of constipation and then almost explosive Bowel movements.

18. How well do you sleep? Do you have a particular posture of sleeping? Like to sleep on my stomach. Some nites sleep right thru the nite, other nites may wake up at 2-4 and have difficulty going back to sleep. Used to need at least 9 hours a nite but seems to be tapering down to about 6-7 now.

19. Do you think you are able to satisfy your sexual desires in general? No

20. How do you think you are different from others, if at all? I am a very ethical, caring person who tries to be fair and reasonable and it does not seem that many share this philosophy.

21. What medications have been taken earlier by you to treat the diseases and do you have any particular symptom surfacing after the medication? I have been on nasal sprays and nasal washes with steroids in them and also anti-fungals but they don’t seem to be very helpful. I continue to try and focus on natural products to try. For the chronic diseases, take Metformin, Glypizide, Naldolol and Altace. No noted issues. Also take Omeprazole for GERD symptoms

22. What major diseases are running in your family? Diabetes, Hypertension, Alcoholism, Gout

23. Describe, how do you look like? Describe your overall appearance I am a fair skinned, dark blonde hair female with blue eyes and ht. of 66”. People say I look Irish, which is half my heritage. I am overweight by about 25 lbs. I don’t look my age and believe that I look younger than stated age.

24. (ONLY FOR FEMALES)

Please answer the following questions:
(Please give details of your past menstruation if you have attained menopause.)
- Are the periods early, regular or late in general? How long do they last? Started my period at age 13 and fairly regularly occurring every month for 3-5 days. Went thru Menopause at approx. age 53.
- Do you suffer from any kind of physical or mental discomfort before, during or after the periods? Certainly felt PMS symptoms of bloated feeling, lethargy and irritability. Took B complex which helped.
- Is the flow scanty, normal or excessive? I believe that the flow was normal
- Is the blood thick bright red or pale watery? Blood was thick and bright red
- Do you notice any clots in the flow? Yes, had some clots.
