Dog with lupus and now infection...

Our 109 pound (overweight due to medication, not overfeeding) four year old spayed Rottweiler, Cena, suffers from lupus. She is being treated with Prednisone and up until a few months ago it was managed tolerably on 50 mg per day. Recently, however, she had a bad flare up with terribly swollen nodes throughout her entire body. The ones at her neck were big enough to hold in your hand. Vet put her on 200 mg for three days/150 mg for three days/100 mg for a week (where we are now), then 50 mg per day. Swelling moved into lips/jowls. Drooling slimy drool, not the liquid stuff. Yelps if she opens her mouth too wide. (Eats, drinks, goes to the bathroom normally. Did have diarrhea for two days now due to diet change.)

Went to vet this afternoon. Bloodwork and urinalysis taken today show infection of some sort. Started on 1 + 1/2 tablets (375 mg tablets) BioClav, twice a day.

I would truly appreciate any advice anyone could offer regarding possible homeopathic/natural remedies I could try along with the Pred and antibiotics to combat this infection.

I very much appreciate your time and reply. I will report back after 10 days, hopefully with wonderful results! :)

I gave our pooch the Apis Mell yesterday as instructed.

However, the health food store only had FERR PHOS 30X not the 3X you suggested. And only the NATRUM SULP 6X not the 3X you suggested. The woman who helped me said it was all the same and would do the same thing...I wish I would have checked before coming home. What should I do in this case??

Also consider giving marine phytoplankton, glyconutrients and goji juice. Should be available at most health food stores.

If the water supply contains chlorine, when giving marine phytoplankton(NOT freshwater) and glyconutrients pick another water source because chlorine reacts badly with marine phytoplankton and glyconutrients.

One person's testimonial:

Zack, 100 pound German Shepherd, started getting sick, eyes glassy , joints moist and swollen, sore on nose, wouldn't heal, diagnosed with lupus( autoimmune disease), cortisone recommended to suppress the immune system, instead given fresh fruits and vegetables, nutritional supplements, acupuncture treatments to dampen his overactive immune system, owner left an unhappy long-term relationship and dog's symptoms began to disappear. When the stress went away the dog got better.

Five days later...five days of antibiotics, as well as the homeopathic remedies as reccomended:

The swelling in her face decreased rapidly upon starting the antibiotics and homeopathic remedies, within three days she was almost back to 100% normal looking. The lymph nodes in her neck are still very enlarged though and don't seem to be decreasing much anymore. They are about the size that can fit in my hand if I were to cup them. Probably apple sized. The vet wants us to keep her on 100 mg of Prednisone to try to get the size down. You can tell she's depressed and not quite herself.

Is there anything I should change? Is there any other ideas you can suggest?

prairiegirl last decade
Forgot to add...the dog has severe flatulence that smells very, very, very bad. Her stomach seems tight and bloated as well. Still eating, drinking and going to the bathroom normally. Always hungry due to the Prednisone.

prairiegirl last decade
Consider giving 2-3 paypaya tablets as needed for gas/bloat.In addition, try adding one tablespoon of pure apple cider vinegar to the drinking water or mixed into the food daily.

You may find this link helpful:
http://www.globalspan.net/bloat.htm

Also switching to a natural diet, raw meat, raw grated vegetables(no onion),a few eggs daily, and a raw meaty bone once a week.

Glyconutrients, marine phytoplankton, goji juice, and wheatgrass as mentioned(all available at most health food stores), as well as Vitamin C and one tablespoon of powdered burdock root daily should help to reduce the size of the lymph nodes.

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU! I am off to the health food store for more supplies.

Forgot to mention:

Yesterday ended her antibiotic therapy.

Today reduced her Prednisone dose from 100 mg to 75 mg.

She is very lethargic today but has been seeking out attention/laying near me to be patted.

Happily ate her breakfast. Went outside and passed a large amount of urine.

(She is also receiving salmon oil and vit. E capsules with her food. Also, I am giving her Floressence tea twice a day.)

Steroids such as Prednisone are not without some serious side-effects including kidney failure and even death. A large output of urine is a symptom of kidney failure.Have your dog checked.

Lupus has been explained as nothing more than the body's indication of the level of toxemia present. Not cured using steroids to suppress rather than correct the symptoms. Detoxification needed. A changeover to a raw food/raw vegetable diet, 1/2 cup of low-fat-cottage cheese mixed together very well with 2 tablespoons of cold-pressed flaxseed oil, and eggs, along with supportive herbs/supplements as mentioned.

BTW, goji juice has been known to bring lupus into submission. Transfer Factor Plus will modulate the immune system and also bring lupus into submission.Start with one capsule and work up to two or three a day. Also the Fisher Institute for Medical Research report that those who added glyconutrients to their diet reported significant improvement in lupus symptoms. It has also been given to pets with lupus with equal results. (Vol. 1 No. 1)

Lupus,in pets, has been linked to over-vaccination. The immune system reels from the yearly onslaught of multiple vaccines and lupus is one of the results. It has been now found that yearly boosters are not necessary unless the pet is located in an extremely high-risk area for the disease, ie, distemper but it's been also found the pets will carry the antibodies induced(from the first vaccine given) against the disease for their full life-span making yearly boosters redundant and an unnecessary health risk.

Dr. Jerry Tennant, M.D. says that marine phytoplankton contains almost everything one needs to sustain life and to restore health by providing the raw materials to make new cells that function normally. Marine phytoplankton has been called 'the most nutritionally dense foods on the planet'. Containing a wide range of trace elements, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, chlorophyll, enzymes and cellular materials, marine phytoplankton promotes and maintains optimum health by boosting and supporting all systems within the body. Its antioxidants and unique polysaccharides can halt the genetic mutations that can lead to cancer. Both high levels of saccharides and adaptogens increase energy and stamina by improving our ability to consume and use oxygen. Adaptogens also improve cardiovascular health by strengthening the heart and circulation.

Marine phytoplankton has been known to cause lupus symptoms to go into remission permanently.

From sites independent of sales of the product:

'In 1995 I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease (connective tissue) known as Lupus. This disease attacks internal organs and the immune system. In a span of two years I endured 7 surgeries resulting in removal of portions of my colon, appendix, gallbladder. I also had a hysterectomy and colostomy. I was exhausted all the time, had constant swollen lymp glands, stiff joints and severe arthritis. Lupus mimics many other diseases and conditions such as heart attack and stroke. I had excessive fluid in the sac around my heart and lungs, partial paralysis, chronic pain, panic attacks and severe depression. Medications used to treat the disease at times were worse than the disease itself. Lupus was beating me! After becoming completely disabled and retiring to bed, I gave up on life. I was introduced to go-ji(lycium)juice and for me my life changed in a way that I would never have imagined. Several months after drinking the juice the lupus went into remission, my eyesight improved, the depression subsided and 'new life' filled my bones. I now feel as if I have a reason for living and helping others. go-ji (lycium) juice will always be a part of my life because it gave me back my LIFE and a reason for LIVING IT!' Gloria, Georgia

'In July 2004, I was diagnosed with a rapidly debilitating and deforming progression of Lupus. It had progressed to a stage where I could do nothing for myself and was in constant excruciating pain. My daughter had to feed and even turn me. The medications that my Specialist had prescribed gave no results. (In fact one of them has been recalled because of causing stroke, serious other side effects and death.) I called a world-renowned Nutritionist and expert on go-ji (lycium) juice berries and he suggested I take 4oz. of go-ji juice twice a day. Within less than a month, I had no more pain and was able to move on my own again. His other suggestion was to add some vitamins, minerals, MSM and a few other nutritional supplements. My Specialist said that I could be one of the fatal statistics. As of June 4, 2005, I am almost back to normal, able to raise my arms over my head, wash my hair, walk with no assistance, exercise, and now do most things for myself. My hair that was lost as a result of the Lupus is growing back, and my eyesight is also improving. I weigh 100 lbs and am toning and working on gaining a little weight. At 71 years young, I give thanks to God for this wonderful gift of go-ji (lycium) juice. I believe it saved my life.' Jemila, Queens, New York

The noted ethnobotanist, Dr. James A. Duke, classifies go-ji as an immunomodulator — an enhancing substance that can balance and normalize abnormal immune response. Lupus is an auto-immune disease.

The potential for go-ji juice to modify health problems is unparalleled in my 40 years of medicine.' - Dr. F.E. Nicley, M.D., University of Tennessee College of Medicine

'The results that I have seen with hundreds of people are truly astonishing... I consider go-ji Juice the cornerstone of my approach to health and vitality. Virtually every one of your important physiologic systems can benefit from go-ji.' - Dr. Ron Friedman, M.D., residency done at Harvard Medical School

'I would recommend go-ji Juice to practically anyone. The results I have seen are nothing short of astonishing.' - Dr. Marc Westaway, M.D., University of Queensland Medical School

'In the 25 years I've worked in the wellness industry, I've never seen nor experienced greater benefit than I have with go-ji Juice. I don't think it's unreasonable to call go-ji, literally, the Fountain of Youth.' - Dr. Sandra Lee Boice, M.S., Ph.D. in Clinical Nutrition

'Although my personal benefits from drinking go-ji Juice have been quite impressive, the results that others with whom I have shared it with have often been absolutely astounding. The go-ji berry is nature's perfect food because it has such a high density of nutrients.' - Dr. Matt Silver, M.D., Family Practice physician with more than 18 years clinical practice

' Go-ji Juice helps people feel happier, allows them to sleep better and improves their immunity better than anything I have ever seen in my medical career.' - Dr. Carlos Orozco, B.S., M.S., Ph.D., Doctorate in Reproductive Biochemistry and Immunology

Go-ji has also worked equally well for pets with lupus( as well as other conditions) with equal success.

Thank you Orian. I purchased the Papaya Enzyme tablets and some Genesis Today 100% pure Goji juice. I did not buy the marine phytoplankton as it was $50.00 per bottle and the Goji juice was also $50.00. We have to watch our budget here, as many are nowadays. (I was thinking I'd buy that on my next trip to town, after our next paycheque. :))

How much of the Goji juice would you suggest? The bottle does not give a dosage, only that 'each 2 tablespoons contains 30,000 mg of pure Goji'. And the bottle of Papaya Enzyme says 'chew one capsule with meal' or as directed by health practitioner. Should I give one at each of her three meals?

Re: wheat grass. The health food store employee I was served by today seemed to know nothing about wheat grass...and sold me some hard red wheat. I am not sure what I'm looking for to grow wheat grass.

Re Goji juice,if choosing between the two continue to give the Goji juice rather than stopping and switching to marine phytoplankton at some future date. In other words, goji juice is the crucial one to give.Start with 3 tablespoons morning and night.Very palatable. Your dog should lap it up easily. The amount may be increased to 4-6 tablespoons(the latter amount should give faster results) twice a day(morning and night) after a few days. Health food stores tend to charge more for Himalayan Goji juice, you may be able to find it cheaper by buying from a reputable dealer online.

Re papaya tablets- give two tablets along with each meal.

Re wheatgrass. The easiest(and most affordable) form is powdered wheatgrass. It usually comes in a 225 gram bottle and sells under various brand names. You also may be able to find it cheaper online from a reputable dealer. The following link is included to give you an idea of what powdered wheatgrass looks like:

Thanks for such quick replies and all the great information.

Because she is getting Prednisone (dropped to 75 mg yesterday), salmon oil and vitamin E capsules, Floressence tea, Nat. Sulp., Ferr. Phos. and now the Goji juice...is there any specific order I should be giving it/wait times between different remedies/any side effects I should be watching for?

(Re: vaccines. As a puppy I gave her all the 'recommended' vaccines because I believed my vet would not steer me wrong. I was wrong. Since my dog has become sick I've researched vaccines and I have no doubts that it's my fault this dog is sick. I regret giving her those vaccinations and I will NEVER vaccinate my pets again. Even if an outbreak of some disease were to happen in our area at least, without vaccinations, their immune systems may be strong enough to battle the disease. If they survive, that's wonderful...if they do not, they wouldn't have survived it with a compromised immune system anyhow. Our dogs have a securely fenced yard on our farm and do not come into contact with wildlife or other dogs so I believe the chances of infection are low anyhow.)

Re Nat Sulph and Ferr. Phos, give as directed above by the member who recommended this to you.

The thing about giving this type of thing is to not to touch the pellets with your hands or anything metal(spoon, etc) because they absorb oils, etc and are rendered less effective. Tap the required number of pellets into a folded piece of white paper and tap into the mouth. No food or water for at least 30 minutes to allow them to assimilate into the system.

Goji juice, morning and evening.

Papaya tablets- two at each meal.

Floressence tea,Vitamin E(watch this, it thins the blood), and salmon oil- space this out through the day and not at the same time as giving the above. Allow each one some time to work and assimilate before giving the next.

Try also not to pack everything in during the day, ie, between 8 am and 8 pm so that the system has nothing all through the night to help it because it was all given during the day. You may even wish to give the Floressence tea at perhaps, 2 pm and 2 am.

Also, perhaps a feeding of 1/2 cup of low-fat cottage cheese whipped together very well with 2 tablespoons of cold-pressed flaxseed oil(keep refrigerated or it turns rancid) some time during the night so that it has time to assimilate before the morning meal is given. You may also wish to give it again at some time during the day.

Re vets recommending yearly booster shots and, indeed, the practise of vaccinating puppies and kittens several months old with 8 vaccines at once. The not-yet-strong immune system reels as the result,as 8 pathogens are injected one after the other. Some pets recover, some don't. More than a few pets have died hours or days after leaving the vet's office and yet the practise continues. It wouldn't be done to a baby receiving its vaccinations yet it is routinely done to puppies, kitten and yes, even sick pets who have entered vets offices for help for the sickness to be met with pressure for the yearly booster shots to be given then and there. The immune system of a sick pet is already compromised. Yearly booster shots still continue to be promoted by many veterinary offices even though the American Veterinary Medical Association has come out with findings that the first vaccinations given still protect against the diseases vaccinated against. The immunity is still there years later.

In these cases one could be led to question the objectivity on the part of anyone who may stand to gain financially from such recommendations and who would also stand to gain financially if the pet became sick as the result.

Thanks yet AGAIN for such helpful information and for your time.

While our dog is still being playful when enticed, she is spending most of her time laying on the cool tile floor. She tires easily on our short walks (when it's cooler out) but seems to recover quickly after a short rest. Her lymph nodes have not increased in size, that I can tell, but they aren't noticably decreasing either. Yet. There is a slight about of fluid retention in the bottom of her ear flaps, that was the one sign that clued me into lupus diagnosis in the first place...while the Pred did initially take care of that symptom, this did happen occasionally again, on and off. Her tongue appears a bit...I don't know...puffy as well, just slightly, and looks off center. I know that sounds weird, ha ha. It might not be important but I wanted to list all the symptoms I've noticed.

Ten days in and her lymph nodes are still not decreasing dramatically in size. One MAY be slightly smaller but I think one MAY be slightly larger this morning. However, apart from being 'lazy' she is still happy to eat and drink and still goes to the bathroom normally.

Might anyone suggest any other homeopathic/herbal remedies that might help battle the lupus/swollen lymph nodes?

I am afraid we are losing the battle. We are fighting another infection in the face/lymph. Back on antibiotics three weeks after the first round (three days ago). Day before yesterday, the day after we started the antibiotics again, she seemed great...the swelling was going away and she was active and very lively. Today she was very poor--bad swelling, drooling, choosing to lie near me when she normally is content across the room. (Still eating, drinking, going to bathroom normally.) If we see no improvement by Monday we will end her suffering humanely.

Might I try Mercurius solubilis?

prairiegirl last decade
Antibiotics are not working for this because they are trying to deal with the various symptoms of lupus not cure the cause of it. The cause of lupus is an over-active immune system and no amount of antibiotics or prednisone can normalize it.

IE, for systemic lupus the symptoms can appear throughout the body. In each case vets have perscribed salves, antibiotics, and numerous other things for the various symptoms rather than dealing with the one cause that is producing all of the symptoms. Cure that one cause and all of the symptoms vanish.

Acupuncture can help you get a handle on lupus, and quickly. In fact, acupuncture has effectively cured lupus.

Acupuncture can boost the immune system, and it can also reduce swollen lymph nodes back to normal size as well as effectively reduce and eliminate all the other symptoms of lupus.

In addition, acupuncture is able to fight infections. Not only that it modulates and can dampen an over-active immune system. Lupus is the result of an over-active immune system. The immune system turns on itself and begins to attack itself in numerous ways.

Acupuncture is effective because it stimulates the body's inner healing mechanisms and stimulates it to use its own defenses to help bring itself back in line to health.

Again, acupuncture can dampen an over-active immune system and it is the result of an over-active immune system that you are seeing now in all of the symptoms your dog is exhibiting.

The effects of acupuncture treatments are pretty immediate.

Once you have a handle on the situation, which acupuncture treatments will give you, continue to use marine phytoplankton, goji juice, and the other things mentioned. They will all support the acupuncture treatments but acupuncture is not dependent on any of them to cure lupus. It can do that without any other aid.

http://www.ivas.org/

The time has come to stop trying to deal with each of the individual symptoms of lupus in your dog and strike at the cause.Acupuncture will enable you to effectively do that.

Find a vet(usually holistic) who has had experience in dealing with lupus in dogs. ASAP.

Time is of the essence in this situation. Do it NOW.

You may give her mercurius sol 30c at a gap of every three hours until you see improvement. If it does'nt give any results within 2-3 days you should start arsenic alb 30c every 3 hour.
