For Sameer, toddler with runny nose, cough, diarrhea, moodiness

Sameer,

littlefinn pointed me in your direction, and I'm very impressed with the help you've been able to give her son. Hopefully reading through her thread will help me quickly post any information you may need to help with my own.

My 21 month old son has had a runny nose and cough since mid-October. Some days are worse, some better, but the cough seems to be worse the past few days, especially overnight. His nasal drainage is almost always clear - only twice has it gone to yellow, and it's gone back to clear after one nose blow. (We've just mastered blowing instead of only wiping! That was a big day!) We took him to the doctor the first time the drainage turned yellow - end of October or beginning of November, I believe - and they gave him antibiotics for an ear infection (he hadn't even been complaining about his ears).

He has also had diarrhea more often than not in the past 6-7 months. I took him to the doctor for that once as well: he was diagnosed with 'toddler's diarrhea' and I was told to 'keep an eye on it.' It got better after about 3 months, then he had a problem with constipation off and on for a few weeks (sometimes constipation immediately followed by diarrhea), and now the diarrhea has come back again for the past two weeks. His stools vary in color (could be yellow, brown, or orange) and thickness (last night, it was even watery) but is never formed anymore. Along with the diarrhea he gets a terrible diaper rash that, if anything, doesn't help his mood at all when I have to change his diaper.

In general, he's very energetic and almost always has to be moving or doing something. He doesn't do very much independently, though I wouldn't call him clingy, either - he likes interaction, I suppose, and likes to keep us informed of what he's doing quite often. One of the few things he will do independently is play with the water in the sink, though even that recently has turned to interaction with lots of yells of, 'Mommy! Sink! Mommy water sink!' while he's playing. I think a lot of that is just that he's learning new words lately, and likes to use them as often as he can.

He's been a lot more affectionate recently, coming to us for hugs and saying, 'Oh, Mommy,' and offering kisses, and then he'll go off to play. He only snuggles for a considerable amount of time when drinking milk, at bedtime, or overnight.

He's never slept well, and that will go through phases of being better-then-worse as well. The cough recently has been making things worse, but outside of that his pattern seems to be bed at 8, wake around 11:30 for hugs and a drink, wake again between 2-3, and then I have to stay in bed with him for the rest of the night for him to stay asleep any longer than 20-30 minutes at a time.

Most of the time he wakes up happy and talkative, but occasionally he'll wake up very clingy, wanting to be held for over an hour, and will shriek if you try to put him down.

He likes to share, and is only possessive of things he knows he's not supposed to have :). He throws a lot of angry tantrums, but generally gets over them quickly with a little time and distraction.

He has fair skin, blonde hair, blue eyes, is very lean and active.

We're most concerned with the persistent diarrhea and cough, but would love to help the runny nose and poor sleeping as well.

I appreciate any help you could offer, whenever your time may allow.

Thank you so much in advance.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Dear,

You might have to wait a few days as I am extremely busy with ongoing cases.

Please bump this up in about 4-5 days in case I dont respond by then.

Hello,

Please mention about his food cravings/aversions and thirst/drinking pattern.

Also, have you noticed any fear ?

Anything which makes him feel good or brightens his food ?

Anything which aggravates him mentally or physically ?

Hi Sameer, thank you for getting back with me!

'Please mention about his food cravings/aversions and thirst/drinking pattern.'

Rice, bananas and goldfish crackers tie for his favorite foods, quickly followed by cheese and apples. He prefers fruits over sweets. He seems to like spicy foods as well, as taco meat is another thing he'll eat consistently when offered. He doesn't like slimy foods like pasta or Jell-O.

As for thirst, he went through a week or so right before I first posted when he was asking for milk constantly, but that's tapered off. He drinks plenty of water, but only seems to remember he's thirsty if we leave a cup sitting out for him and he sees it. When he wakes up in the middle of the night, he usually asks for water, though, and will take a pretty big drink.

'Also, have you noticed any fear ?'

That kid isn't afraid of *anything.*

'Anything which makes him feel good or brightens his food ?'

If he's being grumpy, the two fastest ways to cheer him up are to take a snuggle break on the couch with some milk (more a habit of snuggling while drinking his milk, than having anything to do with the milk itself), or to go outside. He LOVES being outside and typically screams when it's time to come in, even if (like currently) it's freezing outside.

'Anything which aggravates him mentally or physically ?'

Mentally, he seems devastated when we tell him he can't have something of ours that he wants, or when we don't let him 'help' with something we're doing as much as he'd like. He seems to feed off of the aggravation of others around him, as well.

Physically, all I can think of is the diaper rash he gets with his diarrhea. Nothing else is coming to mind.

Is there anything else I could tell you that would help?

Thank you!

Three doses of Pulsatilla 6c to be given for ONE single day as described below.

Dissolve 2 pellets of Pulsatilla 6c in a 250 ml spring water bottle. If leave the pellets in water for 20 mins, they will melt. You can shake it gently after they have dissolved.

Take a teaspoon from this bottle using a disposable spoon 3 times, spaced by 30 minutes. This is to be done for one day ONLY.

Let me know in 4 days after these 3 doses.

Restrictions:

1/. Nothing should enter the mouth for 40 minutes prior to, or after taking the remedy.
2/. Do not touch the tablets with your hands, tip them into the cap of the container they came in and then into the water .
3/. Avoid coffee, tea (including green), and other sources of caffeine such as some fizzy drinks and large amounts of chocolate, except where this would cause a drastic change in consumption
4/. Avoid wearing perfume/aftershave, or exposure to anything with a strong smell on the day and 3 days following the remedy administration. This includes any and all essential oils, and incense.
5/. Avoid the consumption of excessively spicey foods
6/. The use of medicinal herbs, either as 'teas' or supplements should be avoided during Homoeopathic treatment, as should the use of over the counter medication, unless this has been recommended by an MD.
7/. Nothing of a medicinal nature should be applied to the skin

I'll order some Pulsatilla 6c and will let you know 4 days after I give it to him.

What should I expect to see change in him after the doses? Will he simply start to feel better, or will there be a worse-and-then-better kind of reaction to watch out for?

It depends on case to case.

However, we are starting very low in potency, so I would not expect much of an aggravation.

I feel awful that it's been forever and I haven't replied. A series of individual steps in the process took their own individual forever to find good timing to give him the Pulsatilla 6c, then I immediately got distracted by him having a head injury and needing stitches! It's been busy.

I gave him the Pulsatilla 6c as directed a couple of Saturdays ago, and the biggest change I noticed was that his mood improved - he was much more cooperative and calm. His runny nose seemed to lighten up a bit for a week or so, and his stools are more solid, but they had also started to solidify more before I was able to give him the dose. He's wanted less bananas since then, too, though his overall appetite seems to have increased somewhat.

Since he hurt himself, though, he's been back to having a pretty low threshold for tantrums, and his nose is very runny again.

Since I didn't follow-up immediately, should we try the same dose again and start over, or should we move on?

(In the mean time, I'm going to see if I can find this kind of stuff locally, as it took WAY too long to get the Pulsatilla 6c in the mail, and that threw off my groove.)

Thanks!

Excellent !

This was the ideal response to the dose and shows we have hit the correct remedy.

Now, the next step would be to go to a SINGLE dose of Pulsatilla 30c as below.

Dissolve 2 pellets of Pulsatilla 30c in 250 ml spring water, and give him a teaspoon from there JUST once.

Report in 1 week after the dose.

Restrictions above still hold.

Great! I'm glad to hear it did what it was supposed to do! Could you tell that from the mood change, or anything else in particular?

I'm hoping I can find a local provider for the Pulsatilla 30c this time around.

Given how he reacted to the 6c, should I expect anything in particular from the 30c?

Thanks!

You should expect further improvements, both in mood and general well being.
