Teeth Grinding and Constipation - 6 Year old

My 6 year old daughter has been grinding the teeth since a long time, may be since she was 2/3 years old. She has cronic constipation as well since that time.

Initially we had been more concerned about her constipation and so tried giving her with several medicines like Miralax(no side effects) powder as suggested by her pediatrician. This may have continued for a long time and for the time when we gave the miralax powder, she was OK with her stool - however as soon as the miralax was stopped they again became nugget like.

She also had eczema early on. Seeing all this one homeopathic doctor had suggested giving her sulphur and as soon as we administered sulphur she became acutely sick (she was 2.5 years old then) - and had to be taken to emergency - and so we stopped it after 2/3 doses.

Anyways as she grew up, her eczema problem has gone away to a very great extent - We applied cream (and still do - however when she was 3-4 we had used a minimal dose of hydrocortizone cream at times)to keep her skin hydrated. However the constipation and teeth grinding has carried on.

We tried administering her nux vomica (30C) and carica papaya(Q) at different times. Nux did not help much and neither did carica. Till the time she was on carica she was ok - the moment it was stopped, she went back to her original state.

Then just 2 weeks back I thought of trying sulphur again based on some posts in this forum. I gave sulphur 30C at 5am in the morning(after waking her up - she went back to sleep after taking the medicine), and by 8:00-9:00 am she has severe cold with blocked nose etc. and was feverish. This got me to the conclusion that sulphur does not suit her and as an antidote I gave her a single dose of Nux next day.

As none of these remedies worked for her constipation, recently it came to my mind to start probing into her teeth grinding state (this had taken a back stage as all along we had been worried about her constipation) and read about Belladona. I was immidetaely attracted as I see a close relationship to what she exhibits:

1. She does not like drinking water. We have to regularly remind her to drink water.
2. She grinds her teeth at night.
3. She does not sleep well at night and will suddenly wake up crying at night.
4. She is fearful of dark in general and dreads going to sleep.
5. Sometimes says that she is seeing shadows at night.
6. Her stool is like nuggets.

Her other symptoms:
1. I think she feels more hot than cold.
2. She has amblyopia - however after we have done religious patching her eye sight has become 20/20 when she wears her specs.
3. She likes cold water/fluid than warm ones.

I would request the help of veterans here for the following:

1. Shall I proceed with prescribing belladona for her.
2. If so is 6C a good potency to start with?
3. How long should I give that and in which way?

Please be mindful of the fact that this is for a kid - so it would be great if a seasoned practitioner picks up this case.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.

Dr. Sameer/Dr Sukhdeep its so kind of you to take interest in this case.

Dr. Sameer I will wait to hear back from you. Meanwhile if you want any other details answered let me know.I would like to nail this issue in her winter vacation as it becomes difficult to administer the medicines when she is at school.

Just FYI, she is a sensitive kid, very hard working (may not be very sharp but makes it up with her hard work) and methodical - good in studies. She is a very socializing kind of kid and makes friends. Also very careful with what she does - once told the right and wrong, avoids trouble at all times.

Please mention about her food cravings, and aversions.

Does she exhibit a strong desire to be 'safe' and be in her 'comfort zone' all the time ?

sameervermani last decade
The grinding of teeth just happens at night during sleep ?

sameervermani last decade
Also describe how she looks .

sameervermani last decade
She likes slightly(as per her age) spicy stuff like Haldirams,Maggi, Chips etc. Likes to eat non-vegetarian, and fried food. Likes to eat rice/ghee with salt. She likes to eat sweet like chocolates/candies as well as dry indian sweets as well. We let her have these sometimes.

Her meals however are composed of healthy vegetarian stuff and fruits. In fruits she lieks to eat mangoes, plums, bananas etc. She likes to eat beans, karela (bitter gourd), bhindi (ladies finger). She does not like to eat lentils/dals, but eats it regularly. She also does not like to eat veggies like lauki/kaddu and sweets like kheer (rice cooked in milk)

Overall she likes to eat more salty food than sweets.

Yes she tries to be safe most of the times. She also tries to be in her comfort zone.

Yes, the grinding of teeth happens only at night.

She has a round face - medium complexion. Height is 46' and weight is 50 pounds. She has a slightly protruding tummy(pouch).

One of the things I forgot mentioning is that in the past she had said that she has back pain - but that went away in a day. We had spoken with her doctor and he had mentioned that this could be due to her constipation.

tilak2008 last decade
Okay, does she show a strong desire to be self sufficient in day to day things ? e.g. trying to eat her food herself..

Is she difficult to distract from her desires ? i.e. Can she keep herself busy for long periods with one thing ?

sameervermani last decade
No we have not seen any strong desires that she wants to be self sufficient. However, As far as eating is concerned she eats her own food by herself at school. At home also she wants to eat her own food, but that is because so that she can selectively eat the portions that she wants.

I do not think that she can keep herself busy for long periods with just one thing. Moreover she always prefers to have a company in playing.

tilak2008 last decade
Also wanted to mention that recently I have noticed a very tiny spot on her face whcih has a slight white discoloration.

Also just FYI, during winter her skin becoems dry.

tilak2008 last decade
Also regarding her sleep she likes sleeping on her stomach. We will flip her but she says she feels more comfortable the other way.

tilak2008 last decade
Can you please talk more about the methodical part of her persona ?

And, can you also talk more about the 'fear of going to sleep' ?

sameervermani last decade
By methodical I meant that she follows instructions. She is obedient and would comply with our wishes even if she does not like doing it(its a different matter altogether that she is not happy after that)

Actually 'Fear of going to sleep' could be various things in her case. She is generally very sad when its time to go to bed, as this means that the play time is over. It is a little puzzling for us, as we will know that she is very tired, but still she does not want to go to bed. I am not sure if she sees bad dreams or what but we have to be in bed with her for her to fall asleep. She will nudge very close to us and maybe try feeling our feet. Then she might wake up in the night and tries ensuring that we are sleeping next to her. If not she will start crying - which she may not remember later during the day.

She wakes up tired most of the times in the morning.

Dr. Sameer thanks for your time in taking interest in this case.

Please give her 3 doses of Calcarea Carb 6c equally spaced for a single day as below.

Dissolve 2 pellets of Calc 6c in a 250 ml spring water bottle. You can shake it gently after they have dissolved.

Take a capful from this bottle 3 times in one day, spaced by 2 hours. This is to be done for one day ONLY.

Let me know in 3 days after these 3 doses. I will look forward to your update.

Restrictions:

1/. Nothing should enter the mouth for 40 minutes prior to, or after taking the remedy.
2/. Do not touch the tablets with your hands, tip them into the cap of the container they came in and then into the water .
3/. Avoid coffee, tea (including green), and other sources of caffeine such as some fizzy drinks and large amounts of chocolate, except where this would cause a drastic change in consumption
4/. Avoid wearing perfume/aftershave, or exposure to anything with a strong smell while under treatment. This includes any and all essential oils, and incense.
5/. Avoid the consumption of excessively spicey foods
6/. The use of medicinal herbs, either as 'teas' or supplements should be avoided during Homoeopathic treatment, as should the use of over the counter medication, unless this has been recommended by an MD.
7/. Nothing of a medicinal nature should be applied to the skin

Thanks Dr. Sameer for a lightening response. QQ : How much would a capful of this spring bottle be? Maybe 2 tablespoons? If you can give an idea that will be nice.

Also just confirming that after giving 3 does on day 1, nothing is to be given on day 2 and 3, and 4th day I have to report back. Is my understanding correct?

Thanks again.

tilak2008 last decade
Use the cap of the bottle itself , but a teaspoon using a disposable spoon should work as a dose as well.

Your understanding about the dosing is correct.

sameervermani last decade
Thanks Dr. Sameer. One thing that I forgot mentioning was that her stool when constipated are like dark small nuggets - sometimes they are clumped together.

I am not sure if this changes the prescription but thought it prudent to mention it here.

tilak2008 last decade
Go ahead with the dose.

sameervermani last decade
Dear Tilak,

How is your daughter doing now ?

sameervermani last decade
Dear Dr. Sameer,

Its so kind of you to take interest in this case.

It took me sometime to get the right medicine from the store. We had administered her on Monday exactly as you had mentioned.

I think that that there is improvement in her teeth grinding situation. However her constipation is same as before I think.

One very important thing that I noticed and it could have been even when I posted first in this forum is her situation on the face. I was speaking with my wife recently and realized that the white patch that I mentioned earlier started coming soon after I had administered sulfur to her. It was becoming worse whil I was waiting for the store to get the calcaria carb. The skin around her mouth keeps getting extremely dry and white. When we looked closely we found that a thin crust of skin coming off. We have been applying moisturizing lotions several times in a day/night.

Again this does not seem to be anything related to the cal carb that you prescribed but is more related to the sulfur 6c (4 pallet) single dose that I might have given a few weeks back.

Please let me know if I should continue with cal carb and what should be the dose.
Thanks much.
Tilak

tilak2008 last decade
Okay, then good signs.

Please get hold of Calcarea Carb 30c, and repeat the dosing in the exact same manner as the 6c dosing i.e. 3 doses on 1 day only given in water as above.

Report in 8 days after the doses.

sameervermani last decade
Happy New Year Dr. Sameer! I think that there is improvement in her teeth grinding situation - but her fears of dark/night may still be there.

The has been minimal change in her constipation which was a major source of worry even before I started off the teeth-grinding chase.

tilak2008 last decade
Let us wait for 1 more week.

Update me at that time.

sameervermani last decade
Dr. Sameer - reportaing once again - her teeth grinding seems to be better. However she is the same with her motions - she goes everyday, but the stool is hard, small and like nuggets almost all the time.

tilak2008 last decade
Okay, then please go ahead with a single dose of Calcarea Carb 200c.

Dissolve 2 pellets in 120 ml water, and give her a teaspoon from there just ONCE.

Report in 10 days.
