Chronic ear infections - 12 months old

Hi. My 12 month old son has been suffering from ear infections for the past five months. We don't know whether it is separate infections or the same infection that will not go away. He has been treated with four different doses of antibiotics which have not worked, and now our paed wants to put him on a 6 week course of half strength antibiotics to get rid of the fluid behind his ear drum. He does not always have colds with the infections, and he rarely has fever. His main symptom is that he pulls his ears all day and night, and he has 1-2 hour long screaming fits several times a night. He is mostly a happy baby by day, bright and active and very social. We have been seeing a homeopath who has been treating him with ferrum phosphoricum. He feels that this is the correct remedy for our son, but after 2.5 months of trying different potencies, we still don't have a result.

Our son also suffers from silent reflux. We do not know if it is gastro-oesophageal or laryngopharangeal or both. Both kinds run in my husband's family. He is treated with Zantac for reflux and we believe it to be under control.

We are very tired and worried about our son and the pain he is in every night. We are worried about these infections damaging his hearing, and we hate to give him all of these antibiotics and pain killers all the time.

I have posted in here once before, however at the time, we weren't sure about the ear infections being the cause. Now we are more certain, so I am posting again.

Please someone help us.

Write his symptoms and family history in a proper sequence.

Dr Tahira:
When he was seven months old, he had his first ear infection. It was treated with antibiotics. 2 weeks later it returned, and was treated again. Ever since then, he has woken several times a night screaming inconsolably as if in pain. He pulls at his ears all the time, especially at night time when he is screaming. Sometimes he cries and screams and kicks and flinches for 2 hours at a time before he goes back to sleep. When he was 11 months old, he was diagnosed with an other ear infection. Again the antibiotics did not work, and 2 weeks later we had to try another course. That course also did not work, and here we are.

We do not know whether this infection has been just ONE stubborn and long infection, or several shorter ones.

He has had several colds in the last 2 months, since he has been going to daycare for one day a week. He rarely has a fever or other symptoms.

We have no evidence of any food allergies or intolerances.

There is a family history of reflux and ear infections on my husband's side. What else do you need to know about family history?

Thank you Dr Tahira.

1. It's possible, however, he has only ever presented with very low grade fever at the start of the second ear infection.

2. He's never had tonsilitis. It is possible he has had throat problems, although we don't know for sure. When the third infection was diagnosed he also had a red throat. It is not something the doctors check every time because it's so hard to get a baby to open his mouth! His appetite fluctuates, and sometimes he will refuse almost all food for a few days, so it's possible he has had a sore throat at the time.

3. Over the past 3 months: Ferr Phos 3C, Ferr Phos 6C, Ferr Phos 12C, Ferr Phos 30C, Ferr Phos 200C, Ferr Phos M. All potencies had SOME effect, but only for 2 days at most. All potencies seemed to aggravate his symptoms after that time, except for 3C. He is on 3C at the moment, once per day. We have also tried chamomilla 6C twice a day for 3 days, but it made everything worse. We also tried Calc Flour 6X, but only once, as it had no effect.

4. He gets very red, chapped cheeks. They come and go sporadically. They are hot and look sore. He has very bright eyes - like an adult in a child's body. He has very fine, fluffy hair that is thin on top. He has a very strong birthmark on his neck (throat). It is blue/purple and looks like lots of little veins. It gets more obvious when he cries or gets angry.

Has your child been given any of the regular childhood vaccinations? Many times these cause problems around the ENT area. If so, there is another course to take other than random remedies. I await your response.

Dr Tahira:

1. No complications. He turned breech at 37 weeks, but then went back 1 week later.
2. I took pregnancy vitamins (elevit) the whole time, and I still do every now and then (breastfeeding).
3. My husband suffers from gastro-oesophageal reflux. He also has viral vestibulitis (inner ear) which started before my son was born. He also suffers from chronic sinus problems. I have no significant health issues, and we have no other children.
4. He has a healthy bowel - goes every day. No strangeness with urine that I have noticed.

parachute:

Interesting. I often have worried about these things. He has had all the standard immunisations for 2 months, 4 months and 6 months.

mazharmhm:

Can you please tell me a bit about why you have suggested these remedies? For example, what sort of appearance/disposition does a kali mur person have? I have read that it can be good for ear problems, but I want to make sure it is a good remedy for my son before I give it to him. I am so very worried about him and I want to get it right.
