Hand Foot and Mouth Syndrome

My ten month old has sores, like blisters in the back of his mouth and on his uvula and throat. it is sunday and i can only get a hold of the after hours nurse. she suspects it is hand foot and mouth disease (not related to hoof and mouth disease) and suggested i give him a combination of benadryl and malox to help with the pain of the mouth sores. i don't want him to be in such pain, but i don't want to give him those medications either. does anyone kow of something that would be safe for a ten month old child to help relieve the pain from the sores??????
