The ABC Homeopathy Forum

do you gain weight?

Hi all.
I would like to share with you my experience with Cushing's Disease. It is a malfunction of the pituitary gland. For years I was gaining weight and was always red faced and broke ribs rather easily. My dad was a pretty big guy so I really didn't think much of it and I work out doors and didn't think much of my face being red so I ignored it all.The bone breakage was something I never had checked out.I went to the doc finally and he told me to go on a diet for my weight. I did that and it didn't work. He said go on the no carb diet next. That didn't work and then I gave up. I ended up in the hospital for a different reason and told one doc of my problem since I was there. She looked at me and then sent up an endocrinologist. He checked me out and he had his ideas. It took several months for all of the test results to come back and it turned out to be - in the end - that there was a small tumor on my pituitary gland that was making it put out to much cortizol which is what makes the adrenal glands put out adrenalin and certain steroids. To much and you get fat. Your skin gets thin, you bruse easilly, you get very very upset and explosive at people, you get stretch marks on your stomach, you bones break easilly, I broke my ribs twice and my feet twice, you get a very red face, your blood pressure may always be high and untreatable - meds didn't work, you hair gets thin, your face and neck get puffy. I think that's all.
It's my understanding that all of this was caused by to much adrenaline in my system for too long a time - about 10 years for me. I didn't even know I had it. Your adrenal gland can malfunction too and give you the same symptoms if it malfunctions on its own without the pituitary gland tumor. That is Cushing's Syndrome. 1 in 15 million people get this cushing's problem. It's rare and hard to diagnos but not if your doc is up on things. Mine wasn't and has cost me dearly! My body is wrecked now due to all the cortizol and adrenaline for such a long time. I started out at 305 pounds and a year later I'm 220! All they did was remove that small tumor and I was back on the road as far as all those symptoms go. I have had other problems now from the disease. It's too much to get into right now. One thing I would like to mention is that they thought it was just my oversized adrenal gland. They thought it may have been causing my problem. They tested it but the results were not telling them anything. They left it up to me to decide whether or not to remove it. I said to do it. The normal weight of an adrenal gland is 4 grams - mine was 86! Having it removed was good even though it didn't solve all of the problem. It did however stop the weight gain but I wasn't loseing any weight either which I should have been if that adrenal gland was the only problem.
It finally - after a sampling of the amount of cortizol my pituitary gland was putting out was inconclusive - which does take an operation - an MRI finally found the tumor. It was the size of a pencil dot! They removed it and that was that. They go up through your nose to get at it. It was not a big deal. You are out like a light when they do it and recovery is a snap. There can be complications though. After an adrenal gland is removed you must replace the things that it produced so I have to take 2 steroid pills aday for ever. No big deal. It was worth it.
So if anyone is experiencing these symptoms get it checked by an endocrinolgist. If you read this and have any questions I would like to help if I can.
Jeff
